Abstract

The spin-1 Haldane chain is an example of the symmetry-protected-topological (SPT) phase in one dimension. Experimental realization of the spin chain materials usually involves both the uniaxial-type, $D{({S}^{z})}^{2}$, and the rhombic-type, $E[{({S}^{x})}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{({S}^{y})}^{2}]$, single-ion anisotropies. Here, we provide a precise ground-state phase diagram for a spin-1 Haldane chain with these single-ion anisotropies. Using quantum numbers, we find that the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry breaking phase can be characterized by double degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum. Topological quantum phase transitions take place on particular paths in the phase diagram, from the Haldane phase to the large-${E}_{x}$, large-${E}_{y}$, or large-$D$ phases. The topological critical points are determined by the level spectroscopy method with a newly developed parity technique in the density matrix renormalization group [Phys. Rev. B 86, 024403 (2012)], and the Haldane-large-$D$ critical point is obtained with an unprecedented precision, ${(D/J)}_{c}=0.9684713(1)$. Close to this critical point, a small rhombic single-ion anisotropy $|E|/J\ensuremath{\ll}1$ can destroy the Haldane phase and bring the system into a $y$-N\'eel phase. We propose that the compound $[\mathrm{Ni}({\mathrm{HF}}_{2}){(3\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Clpy})}_{4}]{\mathrm{BF}}_{4}$ is a candidate system to search for the $y$-N\'eel phase.

Comparative density-matrix renormalization group study of symmetry-protected topological phases in spin-1 chain and Bose-Hubbard models

Satoshi Ejima, Holger Fehske

We reexamine the one-dimensional spin-1 $XXZ$ model with on-site uniaxial single-ion anisotropy as to the appearance and characterization of the symmetry-protected topological Haldane phase. By means of large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations the central charge can be determined numerically via the von Neumann entropy, from which the ground-state phase diagram of the model can be derived with high precision. The nontrivial gapped Haldane phase shows up in between the trivial gapped even Haldane and N\'eel phases, appearing at large single-ion and spin-exchange interaction anisotropies, respectively. We furthermore carve out a characteristic degeneracy of the lowest entanglement level in the topological Haldane phase, which is determined using a conventional finite-system DMRG technique with both periodic and open boundary conditions. Defining the spin and neutral gaps in analogy to the single-particle and neutral gaps in the intimately connected extended Bose-Hubbard model, we show that the excitation gaps in the spin model qualitatively behave just as for the bosonic system. We finally compute the dynamical spin structure factor in the three different gapped phases and find significant differences in the intensity maximum which might be used to distinguish these phases experimentally.

Quantum phase transitions in spin-1 XXZ chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy

Jie Ren, Yimin Wang, Wen‐Long You

We explore numerically the inverse participation ratios in the ground state of one-dimensional spin-1 $XXZ$ chains with the rhombic single-ion anisotropy. By employing the techniques of density-matrix renormalization group, effects of the rhombic single-ion anisotropy on various information theoretical measures are investigated, such as the fidelity susceptibility, the quantum coherence, and the entanglement entropy. Their relations with the quantum phase transitions are also analyzed. The phase transitions from the $Y$-N\'eel phase to the large-${E}_{x}$ or the Haldane phase can be well characterized by the fidelity susceptibility. The second-order derivative of the ground-state energy indicates all the transitions are of second order. We also find that the quantum coherence, the entanglement entropy, the Schmidt gap, and the inverse participation ratios can be used to detect the critical points of quantum phase transitions. Results drawn from these quantum information observables agree well with each other. Finally we provide a ground-state phase diagram as functions of the exchange anisotropy $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ and the rhombic single-ion anisotropy $E$.

Ground-state fidelity of the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with single ion anisotropy: quantum renormalization group and exact diagonalization approaches

A. Langari, Frank Pollmann, Mohammad Siahatgar

We study the phase diagram of the anisotropic spin-1 Heisenberg chain with single ion anisotropy (D) using a ground-state fidelity approach. The ground-state fidelity and its corresponding susceptibility are calculated within the quantum renormalization group scheme where we obtained the renormalization of fidelity preventing calculation of the ground state. Using this approach, the phase boundaries between the antiferromagnetic Néel, Haldane and large-D phases are obtained for the whole phase diagram, which justifies the application of quantum renormalization group to trace the symmetry-protected topological phases. In addition, we present numerical exact diagonalization (Lanczos) results in which we employ a recently introduced non-local order parameter to locate the transition from Haldane to large-D phase accurately.

Ground-state phase diagram of S=1 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy

Wei Chen, Kazuo Hida, B. C. Sanctuary

One-dimensional $S=1$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy are studied by numerical exact diagonalization of finite-size systems. The numerical data are analyzed using conformal field theory, the level spectroscopy, phenomenological renormalization-group, and finite-size scaling method. We thus present a quantitatively reliable ground-state phase diagram of this model. The ground states of this model contain the Haldane phase, large-D phase, N\'eel phase, two $\mathrm{XY}$ phases, and the ferromagnetic phase. There are four different types of transitions between these phases: the Brezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transitions, the Gaussian-type transitions, the Ising-type transitions, and the first-order transitions. The locations of these critical lines are accurately determined.

Genuine Tripartite Entanglement as a Probe of Quantum Phase Transitions in a Spin‐1 Heisenberg Chain with Single‐Ion Anisotropy

Chon‐Fai Kam, Yang Chen

Abstract The quantum phase transitions of spin‐1 Heisenberg chains with an easy‐axis anisotropy Δ and a uniaxial single‐ion anisotropy D are studied using a multipartite entanglement approach. The genuine tripartite entanglement between the spin blocks, measured by the tripartite qutrit hyperdeterminant, is calculated within the quantum renormalization group method. Using this approach, the phase boundaries between the topological Haldane, large‐D, and anti‐ferromagnetic Néel phases are determined in the half plane with . When the size of the spin blocks increases, the genuine tripartite entanglement between the blocks exhibits a nonzero plateau in the topological Haldane phase, and experiences abrupt drops at both the phase boundaries between the Haldane–large‐D and Haldane–Néel phases, which suggests the usage of genuine multipartite entanglement as a probe of topological phases in spin systems.

Detection of symmetry-protected topological phases in one dimension with multiscale entanglement renormalization

Hsueh-Wen Chang, Yun-Da Hsieh, Ying-Jer Kao

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are short-range entangled quantum phases with symmetry, which have gapped excitations in the bulk and gapless modes at the edge. In this paper, we study the SPT phases in the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with a single-ion anisotropy D, which has a quantum phase transition between a Haldane phase and a large-D phase. Using symmetric multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) tensor networks, we study the nonlocal order parameters for time-reversal and inversion symmetry. For the inversion symmetric MERA, we propose a brick-and-rope representation that gives a geometrical interpretation of inversion symmetric tensors. Finally, we study the symmetric renormalization group (RG) flow of the inversion symmetric string-order parameter, and show that entanglement renormalization with symmetric tensors produces proper behavior of the RG fixed-points.
