Abstract

We analyze correlations between pairs of particle detectors quadratically coupled to a real scalar field. We find that, while a single quadratically coupled detector presents no divergences, when one considers pairs of detectors, there emerge unanticipated persistent divergences (not regularizable via smooth switching or smearing) in the entanglement they acquire from the field. We have characterized such divergences, discussed whether a suitable regularization can allow for fair comparison of the entanglement harvesting ability of the quadratic and the linear couplings, and finally found a UV-safe quantifier of harvested correlations. Our results are relevant to future studies of the entanglement structure of the fermionic vacuum.

Entanglement Harvesting and Divergences in Unruh-DeWitt Detector Pairs

Allison Sachs

We analyze correlations between pairs of detectors quadratically coupled to real and complex scalar bosonic fields in 3+1 dimensions. This is a first step toward studying the entanglement structure of the fermionic vacuum through the entanglement harvesting protocol. We find that, while a single quadratically coupled Unruh-DeWitt presents no divergences, when one considers pairs of detectors there emerge persistent divergences (not regularizable via smooth switching or smearing) in the entanglement they acquire \nfrom the field. These divergences were not anticipated in previous studies. We characterize the divergences, discuss whether a suitable regularization can allow for fair comparison of the entanglement harvesting ability of the quadratic and the linear couplings, and finally find a UV-safe quantifier of harvested correlations.

Entanglement harvesting from multiple massless scalar fields and divergences in Unruh-DeWitt detector models

Allison Sachs, Robert B. Mann, Eduardo Martín-Martínez

We analyze scenarios in which pairs of Unruh-DeWitt-like detectors interact with scalar field(s) with bi-linear and quadratic coupling. For all cases -- real scalar fields, charged scalar fields, and even for couplings mixing two different scalar fields -- we find that the detectors' dynamics depends on the Wightman function of a real scalar field with the same functional form up to a constant multiple. Consequently, entanglement harvesting exhibits low sensitivity to either the kind of scalar field or their charged nature. Furthermore, we show on general grounds that pairs of Unruh-DeWitt-like detectors exhibit persistent divergences when they interact with scalar field(s) with a quadratic or bi-linear coupling and discuss possible avenues to improve the models through the regularization of such divergences.

Ultraviolet structure of entanglement harvesting from energy density and other quadratic couplings

Matheus H. Zambianco, Boris Ragula, Eduardo Martín-Martínez

We study entanglement harvesting with particle detectors coupled to the renormalized energy density of a massless scalar field. Our analysis identifies the distributional mechanism underlying the persistent ultraviolet divergences previously observed for quadratic detector couplings and discusses that the energy density coupling exhibits the same underlying structure. We show that these divergences are entirely controlled by the switching correlation at coincident interaction times. Consequently, pointlike detectors are UV finite whenever the switchings do not overlap. For Gaussian-smeared detectors, the harvesting correlations are automatically finite in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions, while in higher dimensions the remaining divergences are removed by non-overlapping switchings. Finally, we derive general expressions for arbitrary zero-mean Gaussian states and illustrate the formalism with a thermal field state.

Harvesting correlations from complex scalar and fermionic fields with linearly coupled particle detectors

Tales Rick Perche, Caroline Lima, Eduardo Martín-Martínez

We explore entanglement harvesting with particle detectors that couple linearly to non-Hermitian fields. Specifically, we analyze the case of particle detectors coupled to a complex scalar quantum field and to a spin 1/2 fermionic field. We then compare these models with the well-known case of a real scalar field and previous results using quadratic models. Unlike quadratic models, the linear models are able to distinguish the particle from the anti-particle sector of the field. This leads to striking differences between quadratic couplings -- which cannot be related to physically observable processes -- and linear couplings -- that can be related to high-energy physics. Finally, we use this analysis to comment on the role that the field statistics plays on the protocol.

Entanglement harvesting between two inertial Unruh-DeWitt detectors from nonvacuum quantum fluctuations

Dipankar Barman, Subhajit Barman, Bibhas Ranjan Majhi

It is a well-known fact that, in recent times, entanglement harvesting from the quantum field is being rigorously investigated further in flat and different curved backgrounds. The usually understood formulation studies the possibility of two uncorrelated Unruh-DeWitt detectors getting entangled over time due to the effects of quantum vacuum fluctuations. Our current work presents a thorough formulation to realize the entanglement harvesting from nonvacuum background fluctuations. In particular, we further consider single excitation field states and a pair of inertial detectors, respectively, in ($1+1$) and ($1+3$) dimensions for this investigation. Our main observation asserts that entanglement harvesting is suppressed compared to the vacuum fluctuations in this situation. Our other observations confirm a nonzero individual detector transition probability in this background and vanishing entanglement harvesting for parallel comoving detectors. We look into the characteristics of the harvested entanglement and discuss its dependence on different system parameters.

Entanglement harvesting of inertially moving Unruh-DeWitt detectors in Minkowski spacetime

Cendikiawan Suryaatmadja, Robert B. Mann, Wan Cong

We investigate the effects of relative motion on entanglement harvesting by considering a pair of Unruh-Dewitt detectors moving at arbitrary but independent and constant velocities, both linearly interacting with a massless scalar field vacuum in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Working within the weak coupling approximation, we find that the negativity is a (nonelementary) function of the relative velocity of the detectors, as well as their energy gaps and minimal separation. We find parameter regions where negativity increases with velocity up to a maximum and then decreases, reaching zero at some sublight velocity. At any given relative velocity, the harvested entanglement is inversely correlated with the detector energy gap (at sufficiently high values) and the distance of closest approach of two detectors.
