Abstract

We consider an array of the meta-atom consisting of two cut-wires and a split-ring resonator coupled with an electromagnetic field with two polarization components. We show that the system can be taken as a classical analogue of the atomic medium of a double-Λ-type four-level configuration coupled with four laser fields and working under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency, exhibits an effect of plasmon induced transparency (PIT), and displays a similar behavior of atomic four-wave mixing (FWM). We show also that with the PIT and FWM effects the system can support vector plasmonic dromions when a nonlinear varactor is mounted onto the each gap of the split-ring resonator. Our work not only gives a plasmonic analogue of the FWM in coherent atomic systems but also provides the possibility for obtaining new type of plasmonic excitations in metamaterials.

Hybridization Induced Transparency in composites of metamaterials and atomic media

Peter Weis, Juan Luis García‐Pomar, R. Beigang +1 more

We report hybridization induced transparency (HIT) in a composite medium consisting of a metamaterial and a dielectric. We develop an analytic model that explains HIT by coherent coupling between the hybridized local fields of the metamaterial and the dielectric or an atomic system in general. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we evidence HIT in a split ring resonator metamaterial that is coupled to α-lactose monohydrate. Both, the analytic model and numerical calculations confirm and explain the experimental observations. HIT can be considered as a hybrid analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and plasmon-induced transparency (PIT).

Optical-magnetism-induced transparency in a metamaterial

Ling Qin, Kun Zhang, Ru‐Wen Peng +4 more

In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate that electromagnetic transparency can be induced by optical magnetism in a metamaterial, which is composed of metamolecules. Each metamolecule consists of a metallic split-ring resonator, as one bright meta-atom (which is optically magnetic), and also a cut-wire pair, as one dark meta-atom (which is optically nonmagnetic). It is found that magnetic resonances occur at optical frequencies due to the local magnetic interaction between ``bright'' meta-atoms and ``dark'' meta-atoms; thereafter, a transparency window emerges upon the original absorption background. The phenomenon is similar to the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in atomic three-level systems, and a microscopic picture is given to compare it with the EIT. Furthermore, low loss and slow light in this metamaterial have also been verified. The investigations may achieve potential applications on integrated optical circuits.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and four wave mixing in coherently coupled Λ system

Min Kyeong Kim, Lim Lee, Xumei Su +1 more

We have measured electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and four wave mixing (FWM) signals in a three level atomic system to enhance nonlinearity for a weak field due to quantum coherence with standing fields. We were able to observe quite different EIT signals according to a traveling or standing coupling field. (1) We obtained EIT and FWM signals depending on detunings, polarization, (2) and power of the coupling field. Our results will be analyzed theoretically in viewpoint of a photonic band gap model.

Plasmonic analogue of atom systems with two-level to four-level configurations in metamaterials

Hua Xu, Byoung Seung HAM

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) whose mechanism is in destructive quantum interference has been studied in a plasmonic system of metamaterials. Here we study the relation between the plasmonic EIT and atom EIT in multilevel configurations. For numerical simulations finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and density-matrix approach have been used. In the analysis, asymmetric EIT in the plasmonic system is studied for the fundamental understanding of geometry-based transparency. The plasmonic EIT has potential for plasmonic switching using on-demand transparency control.

Two-dimensional plasmon induced grating in a double V-type quantum system

Mehdi Javanmard

Abstract We theoretically study a two-dimensional electromagnetically induced phase grating in a four-level quantum system located near plasmonic metamaterials consisting of a periodic two-dimensional array of metal-coated dielectric nanospheres. The four-level quantum system interacts with a weak-probe laser field and a strong coherent coupling field with a standing-wave pattern. In the presence of plasmonic metamaterials the quantum system becomes sensitive to the relative phase between applied light. Therefore, the linear absorption and Kerr nonlinearity of the medium become phase dependent. Here, due to the standing-wave pattern of coupling light, an absorptive grating or phase grating can be formed in the quantum system. In our proposed model, we show that the diffraction efficiencies of the grating are related to the relative phase between applied fields, when the quantum system is located at different distances from plasmonic metamaterials.

Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency in metamaterials

Philippe Tassin, Lei Zhang, Thomas Koschny +2 more

This study demonstrates a metamaterial with two coupled split-ring resonators (SRR) can exhibit an effect reminiscent of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), a coherent process normally observed in three-level atomic media. The coupling between two SRR induces a frequency splitting in the spectral response of the metamaterial, opening up a narrow transmission band in the centre of the absorption line. The obtained reduction in group velocity together with the low absorption is useful for a variety of slow-light applications, without the need for the extreme cooling or the large magnetic fields that are typically required for EIT in atomic systems.
