Abstract

We establish how the intensities of the higher harmonics that arise when a photoelectron recombines with a parent ion depend functionally on the parameters of the laser wave and atomic medium, and estimate the limiting values of these parameters that are needed to observe the phase synchronization effect.

Phase-Dependent Electron-Ion Recombination in a Microwave Field

K. Richard Overstreet, R. R. Jones, Thomas F. Gallagher

Using picosecond laser photoionization of Li in a microwave field we have observed phase-dependent reccombination of the photoelectrons with their parent Li+ ions. Recombination occurs at phases of the microwave field such that energy is removed from the photoelectron in the first microwave cycle after excitation, and there are two maxima in the recombination in each microwave cycle. These observations are consistent with observations made using an attosecond pulse train phase locked to an infrared pulse and with the "simpleman's" model, modified to account for the fact that the photoelectrons are produced in a Coulomb potential.

Coherence effects accompanying generation of high-order harmonics

Д.Ф. Зарецкий, É. A. Nersesov

For phase-locked emitters, provided a certain relation exists between the pump wave and atomic beam parameters, a saturation effect is shown to be possible for which the intensity of the high-order harmonics ceases to depend on the atomic density. By means of a simple model that includes variations in the intensity of the pump wave in the plane transverse to the focal axis, an expression is obtained for the optimum atomic density of the medium corresponding to intensity saturation. The dependence of the optimum atomic density on the laser power and harmonic number obtained is found to be in qualitative agreement with recently published experimental data.

Laser-Assisted Multicolor Photoionization of Atoms with Higher Harmonics

A. Maquet, Richard Taïeb, Valérie Vëniard

We discuss, via a numerical calculation, the main properties of atomic photoelectron spectra, as they would be obtained by using a radiation pulse containing higher harmonics together with the laser which has been used to generate them. We address more precisely the physically relevant situation in which the harmonics have much weaker intensities than the one of the laser. In such multicolor photoionization processes, the atom can simultaneously absorb harmonic UV photons and exchange, i.e. absorb and/or emit (via stimulated emission) laser IR photons. An interesting outcome of our study is to show that such new effects should be observable with currently developed harmonic sources.
