Floquet engineering of long-range p -wave superconductivity: Beyond the high-frequency limit

Abstract

It has been shown that long-range $p$-wave superconductivity in a Kitaev chain can be engineered via an ac field with a high frequency [M. Benito et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 205127 (2014)]. For its experimental realization, however, theoretical understanding of Floquet engineering with a broader range of driving frequencies becomes important. In this paper, focusing on the ac-driven tunneling interactions of a Kitaev chain, we investigate effects from the leading correction to the high-frequency limit on the emergent $p$-wave superconductivity. Importantly, we find new engineered long-range $p$-wave pairing interactions that can significantly alter the ones in the high-frequency limit at long interaction ranges. We also find that the leading correction additionally generates nearest-neighbor $p$-wave pairing interactions with a renormalized pairing energy, long-range tunneling interactions, and, in particular, multiple pairs of Floquet Majorana edge states that are destroyed in the high-frequency limit.

Floquet engineering of long-range p -wave superconductivity

Floquet Majorana fermions appear as steady states at the boundary of time-periodic topological phases of matter. In this work, we theoretically study the main features of these exotic topological phases in the periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model. By controlling the ac fields, we can predict topological phase transitions that should give rise to signatures of Majorana states in experiments. Moreover, the knowledge of the time dependence of these Majorana states allows one to manipulate them. Our work contains a complete analysis of the monochromatic driving in different frequency regimes.

Critical phase boundaries of static and periodically kicked long-range Kitaev chain

Utso Bhattacharya, Somnath Maity, Amit Dutta +1 more

We study the static and dynamical properties of a long-range Kitaev chain, i.e. a p -wave superconducting chain in which the superconducting pairing decays algebraically as [Formula: see text], where l is the distance between the two sites and [Formula: see text] is a positive constant. Considering very large system sizes, we show that when [Formula: see text], the system is topologically equivalent to the short-range Kitaev chain with massless Majorana modes at the ends of the system; on the contrary, for [Formula: see text], there exist symmetry protected massive Dirac end modes. We further study the dynamical phase boundary of the model when periodic [Formula: see text]-function kicks are applied to the chemical potential; we specially focus on the case [Formula: see text] and analyze the corresponding Floquet quasienergies. Interestingly, we find that new topologically protected massless end modes are generated at the quasienergy [Formula: see text] (where T is the time period of driving) in addition to the end modes at zero energies which exist in the static case. By varying the frequency of kicking, we can produce topological phase transitions between different dynamical phases. Finally, we propose some bulk topological invariants which correctly predict the number of massless end modes at quasienergies equal to 0 and [Formula: see text] for a periodically kicked system with [Formula: see text].

Transient Floquet engineering of superconductivity

Nagamalleswararao Dasari, Martin Eckstein

Intense time-periodic laser fields can transform the electronic structure of a solid into strongly modified Floquet-Bloch bands. While this suggests multiple pathways to induce electronic orders such as superconductivity or charge density waves, the possibility of preparing low-energy phases of Floquet Hamiltonians remains unclear because of the energy absorption at typical experimentally accessible driving frequencies. Here we investigate a realistic pathway towards laser control of electronic orders, which is the transient enhancement of fluctuating orders. Using a conserving Keldysh Green's function formalism, we simulate the buildup of short range Cooper-pair correlations out of a normal metal in the driven attractive Hubbard model. Even for frequencies only slightly above or within the bandwidth, a substantial enhancement of correlations can be achieved before the system reaches a high electronic temperature. This behavior relies on the nonthermal nature of the driven state. The effective temperature of the electrons at the Fermi surface, which more closely determines the superconducting correlations, remains lower than an estimate from the global energy density. Even though short ranged, the fluctuations can have marked signatures in the electronic spectra.

Majorana Edge modes of Kitaev Chain with Multiple Time Periodic Driving

Huan‐Yu Wang, Lin Zhuang, W. M. Liu

Floquet Majorana edge modes capture the topological features of periodically driven superconductors. We present a Kitaev chain with multiple time periodic driving and demonstrate how the avoidance of bands crossing is altered, which gives rise to new regions supporting Majorana edge modes. A one dimensional generalized method was proposed to predict Majorana edge modes via the Zak phase of the Floquet bands. We also study the time independent effective Hamiltonian at high frequency limit and introduce diverse index to characterize topological phases with different relative phase between the multiple driving. Our work enriches the physics of driven system and paves the way for locating Majorana edge modes in larger parameter space.

Robust Majorana edge modes with low frequency multiple time periodic driving

Huan‐Yu Wang, Lin Zhuang, Gao Xianlong +2 more

Abstract Floquet Majorana edge modes capture the topological features of periodically driven p-wave superconductors. We present a Kitaev chain with multiple time periodic driving terms. Our results demonstrate how multiple driving will affect Floquet bands in frequency space, leading to more robust Floquet Majorana edge modes against driving frequency ω in comparison with the single driving scenario. Meanwhile, we have proposed how to predict Majorana edge modes via the Zak phase of Floquet bands. Besides, in contrast to the cases with single driving term, where the constant phase can be gauged out by properly choosing the initial time, we have shown the relative phase between multiple driving can not be gauged out and will play a dominant role in deciding topological phase transitions. For the sake of completeness, we also investigate the high frequency limit. Analytical results on effective Hamiltonian can be obtained via Magnus expansion and relative phase induced topological transitions can be shown explicitly.

Floquet engineering magnetism and superconductivity in the square-lattice Hubbard model

Jan-Niklas Herre, Takuya Okugawa, Ammon Fischer +2 more

We study the interplay of magnetic order and superconductivity in the square-lattice Hubbard model under periodic driving with circularly polarized light. Formulating diagrammatic techniques based on the random-phase approximation in terms of Floquet Green's functions, allows us to analyze fluctuation-driven unconventional pairing for weak to moderate interactions. The interplay of repulsive interactions and photoassisted hopping of electrons gives rise to a rich magnetic phase diagram featuring an antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition prior to a Floquet Lifshitz transition. Close to the antiferromagnetic transition, topological d + i d -wave superconductivity prevails in the phase diagram for a wide range of drive parameters. At intermediate- to high-frequency driving near the Floquet Lifshitz transition, superconducting orders are tuned from spin-singlet d -wave to spin-triplet p -wave character, providing an effective protocol for Floquet engineering topological superconductivity.
