Abstract

Abstract Floquet Majorana edge modes capture the topological features of periodically driven p-wave superconductors. We present a Kitaev chain with multiple time periodic driving terms. Our results demonstrate how multiple driving will affect Floquet bands in frequency space, leading to more robust Floquet Majorana edge modes against driving frequency ω in comparison with the single driving scenario. Meanwhile, we have proposed how to predict Majorana edge modes via the Zak phase of Floquet bands. Besides, in contrast to the cases with single driving term, where the constant phase can be gauged out by properly choosing the initial time, we have shown the relative phase between multiple driving can not be gauged out and will play a dominant role in deciding topological phase transitions. For the sake of completeness, we also investigate the high frequency limit. Analytical results on effective Hamiltonian can be obtained via Magnus expansion and relative phase induced topological transitions can be shown explicitly.

Majorana Edge modes of Kitaev Chain with Multiple Time Periodic Driving

Huan‐Yu Wang, Lin Zhuang, W. M. Liu

Floquet Majorana edge modes capture the topological features of periodically driven superconductors. We present a Kitaev chain with multiple time periodic driving and demonstrate how the avoidance of bands crossing is altered, which gives rise to new regions supporting Majorana edge modes. A one dimensional generalized method was proposed to predict Majorana edge modes via the Zak phase of the Floquet bands. We also study the time independent effective Hamiltonian at high frequency limit and introduce diverse index to characterize topological phases with different relative phase between the multiple driving. Our work enriches the physics of driven system and paves the way for locating Majorana edge modes in larger parameter space.

Floquet topological superconductors with many Majorana edge modes: topological invariants, entanglement spectrum and bulk-edge correspondence

Hailing Wu, Shenlin Wu, Longwen Zhou

Abstract One-dimensional (1D) Floquet topological superconductors possess two types of degenerate Majorana edge modes at zero andπquasienergies, leaving more room for the design of boundary time crystals and quantum computing schemes than their static counterparts. In this work, we discover Floquet superconducting phases with large topological invariants and arbitrarily many Majorana edge modes in periodically driven Kitaev chains (KCs). Topological winding numbers defined for the Floquet operator and Floquet entanglement Hamiltonian are found to generate consistent predictions about the phase diagram, bulk-edge correspondence and numbers of zero andπMajorana edge modes of the system under different driving protocols. The bipartite entanglement entropy further shows non-analytic behaviors around the topological transition point between different Floquet superconducting phases. These general features are demonstrated by investigating the KC with periodically kicked pairing or hopping amplitudes. Our discovery reveals the rich topological phases and many Majorana edge modes that could be brought about by periodic driving fields in 1D superconducting systems. It further introduces a unified description for a class of Floquet topological superconductors from their quasienergy bands and entanglement properties.

Edge and bulk localization of Floquet topological superconductors

Tilen Čadež, Rubem Mondaini, Pedro D Sacramento

We study the bulk and edge properties of a driven Kitaev chain, where the driving is performed as instantaneous quenches of the on-site energies. We identify three periodic driving regimes: low period, which is equivalent to a static model, with renormalized parameters obtained from the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) expansion; intermediate period, where the first order BCH expansion breaks down; and high period when the quasienergy gap at $\ensuremath{\omega}/2$ closes. We investigate the dynamical localization properties for the case of quasiperiodic potential driving as a function of its amplitude and the pairing strength, obtaining regimes with extended, critical, and localized bulk states, if the driving is performed at high frequencies. In these we characterize wave-packet propagation, obtaining ballistic, subdiffusive, and absence of spreading, respectively. In the intermediate period regime, we find an additional region in the phase diagram with a mobility edge between critical and localized states. Furthermore, we investigate the stability of these phases under time aperiodicity on the drivings, observing that the system eventually thermalizes: It results in featureless random states which can be described by the symmetry of the Hamiltonian. In a system with open edges, we find that both Majorana and fermionic localized edge modes can be engineered with a spatially quasiperiodic potential, in similarity with the case of homogeneous on-site energies. Besides, we demonstrate the possibility of creating multiple Majorana 0 and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes in a driven setting, even if the underlying static Hamiltonian is in its trivial phase. Lastly, we study the robustness of the Majorana modes against the aperiodicity in the driving period, showing that the ones created via quasiperiodic potential are more robust to the decoherence. Moreover, we find an example where a Majorana mode displays high robustness, provided that it is chosen from a special point in the topological region.

Anatomy of a Periodically Driven p-Wave Superconductor

Erhai Zhao

Abstract The topological properties of periodically driven many-body systems often have no static analogs and defy a simple description based on the effective Hamiltonian. To explore the emergent edge modes in driven p-wave superconductors in two dimensions, we analysed a toy model of Kitaev chains (one-dimensional spinless p-wave superconductors with Majorana edge states) coupled by time-periodic hopping. We showed that with proper driving, the coupled Kitaev chains can turn into a fully gapped superconductor, which is analogous to the p x +ip y state but has two, rather than one, chiral edge modes. A different driving protocol turns it into a gapless superconductor with isolated point nodes and completely flat edge states at quasienergy ω=0 or π/T, with T as the driving period. The time evolution operator U(k x , k y , t) of the toy model is computed exactly to yield the phase bands. And the “topological singularities” of the phase bands are exhausted and compared to those of a periodically driven Hofstadter model, which features counter-propagating chiral edge modes. These examples demonstrate the unique edge states in driven superconducting systems and suggest driving as a potentially fruitful route to engineer new topological superconductors.

Floquet Topological Superfluid and Majorana Zero Modes in Two-Dimensional Periodically Driven Fermi Systems

Xiaosen Yang, Beibing Huang, Zhengling Wang

Abstract We propose a simple approach to realize two-dimensional Floquet topological superfluid by periodically tuning the depth of square optical lattice potentials. We show that the periodic driving can induce topological phase transitions between trivial superfluid and Floquet topological superfluid. For this systems we verify the anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence, namely that the robust chiral Floquet edge states can appear even when the winding number of all the bulk Floquet bands is zero. We establish the existence of two Floquet Majorana zero modes separated in the quasienergy space, with ε0,π = 0,π/T at the topological defects.

Floquet engineering of long-range p -wave superconductivity

M. Benito, Álvaro Gómez-León, V. M. Bastidas +2 more

Floquet Majorana fermions appear as steady states at the boundary of time-periodic topological phases of matter. In this work, we theoretically study the main features of these exotic topological phases in the periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model. By controlling the ac fields, we can predict topological phase transitions that should give rise to signatures of Majorana states in experiments. Moreover, the knowledge of the time dependence of these Majorana states allows one to manipulate them. Our work contains a complete analysis of the monochromatic driving in different frequency regimes.
