Abstract

We provide a general construction of convex roof measures of coherence. This construction is based on arbitrary coherence measures of pure states in the framework of resource theory of coherence. Convex roof measures of coherence bound from above all possible coherence measures, given specific valid quantifications of pure states.

l 1 norm of coherence is not equal to its convex roof quantifier

Jianwei Xu

Abstract Since a rigorous framework for quantifying quantum coherence was established by Baumgratz et al (2014 Phys. Rev. Lett. 113 140401), many coherence measures have been found. For a given coherence measure C , extending the values of C on pure states to mixed states by the convex roof construction, we will get a valid coherence measure C ¯ , we call C ¯ the corresponding convex roof quantifier of C . Whether C = C ¯ for a given coherence measure is an important question. In this work, we show that for the widely used coherence measure, l 1 norm of coherence C l 1 , it holds that C l 1 ≠ C l 1 ¯ .

Quantifying coherence in terms of the pure-state coherence

Deng-hui Yu, Li‐qiang Zhang, Chang‐shui Yu

Quantifying quantum coherence is a key task in the resource theory of coherence. Here we establish a good coherence monotone in terms of a state conversion process, which automatically endows the coherence monotone with an operational meaning. We show that any state can be produced from some input pure states via the corresponding incoherent channels. It is found that the coherence of a given state can be well characterized by the least coherence of the input pure states, so a coherence monotone is established by only effectively quantifying the input pure states. In particular, we show that our proposed coherence monotone is the supremum of all the coherence monotones that give the same coherence for any given pure state. We also prove that our coherence monotone is continuous. Considering the convexity, we prove that our proposed coherence measure is a subset of the coherence measure based on the convex roof construction. The similarities and differences between our coherence monotone and coherence cost are studied in detail. As applications, we give a concrete expression of our coherence measure by employing the geometric coherence of a pure state. We also give a thorough analysis of the states of the qubit and finally obtain a series of analytic coherence measures. The numerical examples are also given to show the difference between our coherence monotone and that based on the convex roof construction.

Convex geometry of quantum resource quantification

Bartosz Regula

Abstract We introduce a framework unifying the mathematical characterisation of different measures of general quantum resources and allowing for a systematic way to define a variety of faithful quantifiers for any given convex quantum resource theory. The approach allows us to describe many commonly used measures such as matrix norm-based quantifiers, robustness measures, convex roof-based measures, and witness-based quantifiers together in a common formalism based on the convex geometry of the underlying sets of resource-free states. We establish easily verifiable criteria for a measure to possess desirable properties such as faithfulness and strong monotonicity under relevant free operations, and show that many quantifiers obtained in this framework indeed satisfy them for any considered quantum resource. We derive various bounds and relations between the measures, generalising and providing significantly simplified proofs of results found in the resource theories of quantum entanglement and coherence. We also prove that the quantification of resources in this framework simplifies for pure states, allowing us to obtain more easily computable forms of the considered measures, and show that many of them are in fact equal on pure states. Further, we investigate the dual formulation of resource quantifiers, which provide a characterisation of the sets of resource witnesses. We present an explicit application of the results to the resource theories of multi-level coherence, entanglement of Schmidt number k , multipartite entanglement, as well as magic states, providing insight into the quantification of the four resources by establishing novel quantitative relations and introducing new quantifiers, such as a measure of entanglement of Schmidt number k which generalises the convex roof–extended negativity, a measure of k -coherence which generalises the ℓ 1 norm of coherence, and a hierarchy of norm-based quantifiers of k -partite entanglement generalising the greatest cross norm.

Closed expressions for one-qubit states of convex roof coherence measures

Xiao-Dan Cui, C L Liu

Abstract We study the closed expressions of the convex roof coherence measures for one-qubit states in this paper. We present the analytical expressions for the convex roof coherence measures, C f ( ρ ) , of one-qubit states with C f ( φ ) := f ( c 0 2 , c 1 2 ) (where | φ ⟩ = c 0 | 0 ⟩ + c 1 | 1 ⟩ ) being convex with respect to the l 1 norm of coherence of ϕ (i.e. C l 1 ( φ ) ), such coherence measures including the coherence of formation, the geometric measure of coherence, the coherence concurrence, and the coherence rank. We further present the operational interpretations of these measures. Finally, we present the usefulness of the convex roof coherence measures C f ( φ ) being non-convex with respect to C l 1 ( φ ) by giving the necessary and sufficient conditions for the transformations p φ 1 ⊕ ( 1 − p ) φ 2 → q ϕ 1 ⊕ ( 1 − q ) ϕ 2 via incoherent operations, where ϕ i , φ j ( i , j = 1 , 2 ) are one-qubit pure states and 0 ⩽ p , q ⩽ 1 .

Measuring coherence with entanglement concurrence

Xianfei Qi, Ting Gao, Fengli Yan

Abstract Quantum coherence is a fundamental manifestation of the quantum superposition principle. Recently, Baumgratz et al (2014 Phys. Rev. Lett . 113 140401) presented a rigorous framework to quantify coherence from the view of theory of physical resource. Here we propose a new valid quantum coherence measure which is a convex roof measure, for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, essentially using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. Rigorous proof shows that the proposed coherence measure, coherence concurrence, fulfills all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence measures. Moreover, strong links between the resource frameworks of coherence concurrence and entanglement concurrence is derived, which shows that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement based on two kinds of concurrence. This new coherence measure, coherence concurrence, may also be beneficial to the study of quantum coherence.

Generalized coherence vector applied to coherence transformations and quantifiers

G. M. Bosyk, Marcelo Losada, César Massri +2 more

One of the main problems in any quantum resource theory is the characterization of the conversions between resources by means of the free operations of the theory. In this work we advance on this characterization within the quantum coherence resource theory by introducing the generalized coherence vector of an arbitrary quantum state. The generalized coherence vector is a probability vector that can be interpreted as a concave roof extension of the pure states coherence vector. We show that it completely characterizes the notions of being incoherent, as well as being maximally coherent. Moreover, using this notion and the majorization relation, we obtain a necessary condition for the conversion of general quantum states by means of incoherent operations. These results generalize the necessary conditions of conversions for pure states given in the literature, and show that the tools of the majorization lattice are useful also in the general case. Finally, we introduce a family of coherence quantifiers by considering concave and symmetric functions applied to the generalized coherence vector. We compare this proposal with the convex roof measure of coherence and others quantifiers given in the literature.
