Abstract

Expressing the Schroedinger Lagrangian ${\cal L}$ in terms of the quantum wavefunction $ψ=\exp(S+{\rm i}I)$ yields the conserved Noether current ${\bf J}=\exp(2S)\nabla I$. When $ψ$ is a stationary state, the divergence of ${\bf J}$ vanishes. One can exchange $S$ with $I$ to obtain a new Lagrangian $\tilde{\cal L}$ and a new Noether current $\tilde{\bf J}=\exp(2I)\nabla S$, conserved under the equations of motion of $\tilde{\cal L}$. However this new current $\tilde{\bf J}$ is generally not conserved under the equations of motion of the original Lagrangian ${\cal L}$. We analyse the role played by $\tilde{\bf J}$ in the case when classical configuration space is a complex manifold, and relate its nonvanishing divergence to the inexistence of complex-analytic wavefunctions in the quantum theory described by ${\cal L}$.

Classical-Quantum Correspondence by Means of Probability Densities

Gabino Torres Vegas, J. D. Morales‐Guzmán

Within the frame of the recently introduced phase space representation of non relativistic quantum mechanics, we propose a Lagrangian from which the phase space Schrodinger equation can be derived. From that Lagrangian, the associated conservation equations, according to Noether's theorem, are obtained. This shows that one can analyze quantum systems completely in phase space as it is done in coordinate space, without additional complications.

Nonlinear quantum mechanics, complex classical mechanics and conservation laws for closed and open systems

Dieter Schuch

Phase and amplitude of the complex wave function are not independent of each other, but coupled, which becomes obvious looking at Madelung's hydrodynamic formulation of quantum mechanics. In the time-independent case, this leads to a kind of conservation law that allows for the reformulation of the linear Schrodinger equation in terms of a nonlinear Ermakov equation which is equivalent to a complex Riccati equation where the quadratic term in this equation explains the origin of the phase-amplitude coupling. A similar conservation law and corresponding nonlinear equations can also be found in the time-dependent case. The gain from the nonlinear formulations emerges when open systems with dissipation and irreversibility are considered. Describing this kind of systems by an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation leads to a modification of the above-mentioned equations with new qualitative effects like Hopf bifurcations.

Symmetries of the Schrödinger bundle

V. Aldaya, J. A. de Azcárraga

We exhibit in this paper the invariance of the Schrödinger Lagrangian density under the eleven-parameter group 𝒢(m), central extension of the Galilei group 𝒢. As a result, the quantum mechanical probability ℱρ d3x turns out to be the conserved charge associated with the central generator of 𝒢(m), and the continuity equation is simply the expression of the conservation of the corresponding Noether current.

Nonlinear Phase Modification of the Schroedinger Equation

Waldemar Puszkarz

A nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation is proposed in which the Lagrangian density for the Schrödinger equation is extended by terms polynomial in $Δ^{m}\ln (Ψ^{*}/Ψ)$ multiplied by $Ψ^{*}Ψ$. This introduces a homogeneous nonlinearity in a Galilean invariant manner through the phase $S$ rather than the amplitude $R$ of the wave function $Ψ=R\exp (iS)$. From this general scheme we choose the simplest minimal model defined in some reasonable way. The model in question offers the simplest way to modify the Bohm formulation of quantum mechanics so as to allow a leading phase contribution to the quantum potential and a leading quantum contribution to the probability current removing asymmetries present in Bohm's original formulation. It preserves most of physically relevant properties of the Schrödinger equation including stationary states of quantum-mechanical systems. It can be thought of as the simplest model of nonlinear quantum mechanics of extended objects among other such models that also emerge within the general scheme proposed. The extensions of this model to $n$ particles and the question of separability of compound systems are studied. It is noted that there exists a weakly separable extension in addition to a strongly separable one. The place of the general modification scheme in a broader spectrum of nonlinear modifications of the Schrödinger equation is discussed. It is pointed out that the models it gives rise to have a unique definition of energy in that the field-theoretical energy functional coincides with the quantum-mechanical one. It is found that the Lagrangian for its simplest variant represents the Lagrangian for a restricted version of the Doebner-Goldin modification of this equation.

This research aims to formulate conserved quantities (classical observables) in Noether’s theorem for quantum hydrodynamics within the framework of symplectic geometry. The symplectic one-form or symplectic potential is identical to the Noether current. 31 The Noether current plays an important role in determining classical observables and conserved quantities, namely, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] associated with the above symmetry in quantum hydrodynamics (nonrelativistic and relativistic) associated with Killing vector field and rotational symmetry group [Formula: see text].
