Abstract

A simple and general definition of quasi cyclic low density parity check (QC LDPC) codes which are constructed based on circulant permutation matrices (CPM) is proposed. As an special case of this definition, we first represent one type of so called combinatorially designed multiple edge protograph codes. The code construction is mainly based on perfect difference families (PDF) and is called Construction 1. Secondly, using the proposed Construction 1 along with a technique named as column dispersion technique (CDT), we design several types of multiple-edge CPM QC LDPC codes (codes with Construction 2) in a wide range of rates, lengths, girths and minimum distances. Parameters of some of these codes are reported in tables. Also included in this paper are the multiplicities of short simple cycles of length up to 10 in Tanner graph of our constructed codes. Our experimental results for short to moderate length codes show that although minimum distances of codes play an important role in waterfall region, the higher the number of short simple cycles is, the better (sharper) the waterfall is. The performances of many codes such as WiMAX, PEG, array, MacKay, algebraic and combinatorial, and also, symmetrical codes have compared with our constructed codes. Based on our numerical results and regardless of how a code is constructed, those with higher number of short simple cycles and higher minimum distances, have better waterfalls.

1Design of Multiple-Edge Protographs for QC LDPC Codes Avoiding Short Inevitable Cycles

Hosung Park Seokbeom Hong

There have been lots of efforts on the construction of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with large girth. However, most of them are focused on protographs with single edges and little research has been done for the construction of QC LDPC codes lifted from protographs with multiple edges. Compared to single-edge protographs, multiple-edge protographs have benefits such that QC LDPC codes lifted from them can potentially have larger minimum Hamming distance. In this paper, all subgraph patterns of multiple-edge protographs, which prevent QC LDPC codes from having large girth by inducing inevitable cycles, are fully investigated based on graph-theoretic approach. By using combinatorial designs, a systematic construction method of multiple-edge protographs is proposed for regular QC LDPC codes with girth at least 12 and also other method is proposed for regular QC LDPC codes with girth at least 14. A construction algorithm of QC LDPC codes by lifting multiple-edge protographs is proposed and it is shown that the resulting QC LDPC codes have larger upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance than those lifted from single-edge protographs. Simulation results are provided to compare the performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes, the progressive edge-growth (PEG) LDPC codes, and the PEG QC LDPC codes.

A Construction of High Performance Quasicyclic LDPC Codes: A Combinatoric Design Approach

Muhammad Asif, Wuyang Zhou, Muhammad Ajmal +2 more

This correspondence presents a construction of quasicyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on a special type of combinatorial designs known as block disjoint difference families (BDDFs). The proposed construction of QC-LDPC codes gives parity-check matrices with column weight three and Tanner graphs having a girth lower-bounded by 6. The proposed QC-LDPC codes provide an excellent performance with iterative decoding over an additive white Gaussian-noise (AWGN) channel. Performance analysis shows that the proposed short and moderate length QC-LDPC codes perform as well as their competitors in the lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region but outperform in the higher SNR region. Also, the codes constructed are quasicyclic in nature, so the encoding can be done with simple shift-register circuits with linear complexity.

Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Based on Progressive Cycle Growth Algorithm

Yuanhua Liu, Meiling Zhang, Niu Xin-Liang

Short cycles in the Tanner graph of a given LDPC code has negative effect on the performance of iterative decoding. To improve the performance, we presented an approach for constructing Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes whose associated Tanner graph has large girth and a small amount of short cycles. Each column block of the parity check matrix was designed by adding circulant permutation sub-matrices one after another, provided the current parity check matrix has minimal number of short cycles. The condition for the proposed QC-LDPC codes to have girth at least 6 was also analyzed. Regular and irregular QC-LDPC codes with various lengths and rates can be constructed. Simulations show that the proposed QC-LDPC codes have less short cycles and better performance than existing progressive edge growth based QC-LDPC codes.

Construction of High-Rate Regular Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes Based on Cyclic Difference Families

Hosung Park, Seokbeom Hong, Jong‐Seon No +1 more

For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to have short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, based on special classes of cyclic difference families, we propose a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes having parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with column-weight 3 or 4. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructed for various code rates and lengths including the minimum achievable length for given column-weight and design rate under girth 6. It is observed that the parity-check matrices of the proposed QC LDPC codes have full rank for column-weight 3 and just one redundant row for column-weight 4. It is shown that the error correcting performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes of short and moderate lengths is almost the same as that of the existing ones through numerical analysis.

Some explicit constructions of type-II, III, IV, V QCLDPC codes with girth 6

Farzaneh Abedi, Mohammad Gholami

Multi-type quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes can be considered as multiple-edge protograph QC-LDPC codes having some advantages in the minimum Hamming distance bound over single-edge protograph codes or type-I QC-LDPC codes when the base matrices have the same size. In this paper, we investigate a class of multi-type QC-LDPC codes whose parity-check matrices contain just one blockrow of circulants and we obtain the generator matrix of such codes in general form. Using the permutation arrays and defining injection arrays, we present a new approach to construct a class of high-rate type-I QC-LDPC codes with girth 6 from the constructed 4-cycle free multi-type QC-LDPC codes. In continue, for 2 ≤ w ≤ 6, some type-w QC-LDPC codes with girth 6 are constructed explicitly such that the constructed codes are flexible in terms of rate and length. To the best of our knowledge, for w = 5,6, this is the first paper which deals with the explicit construction of type-w QC-LDPC codes with girth 6 and high rates. Moreover, for w = 3,4, the constructed type-w QC-LDPC codes have better (6,8)-cycle multiplicities than the codes with minimum achievable length recently constructed by cyclic difference families (CDFs). Simulation results show that the binary and non-binary constructed codes outperform the constituent underlying QC-LDPC codes.
