We introduce a matrix-product state based method to efficiently obtain dynamical response functions for two-dimensional microscopic Hamiltonians. We apply this method to different phases of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model and identify characteristic dynamical features. In the ordered phases proximate to the spin liquid, we find significant broad high-energy features beyond spin-wave theory, which resemble those of the Kitaev model. This establishes the concept of a proximate spin liquid, which was recently invoked in the context of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on α-RuCl_{3}. Our results provide an example of a natural path for proximate spin liquid features to arise at high energies above a conventionally ordered state, as the diffuse remnants of spin-wave bands intersect to yield a broad peak at the Brillouin zone center.

We study the spin excitation spectra in magnetically ordered phases proximate to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL). Although the low-energy universal features should be governed by the magnetic orders, the non-universal high-energy features of the KQSL and adjacent phases can be remarkably similar. Therefore, we study the extended Kitaev model within a Stoner-like theory using Majorana partons, and compute the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) intensities in the random phase approximation. First, we benchmark against the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model and recover the AFM order with linear Goldstone modes. We then explore the phase diagram which agrees qualitatively with previous numerical results. In particular, the Majorana parton theory accurately captures Order-by-Disorder effects in the Kitaev-Heisenberg limit. We also find large INS intensities near the associated high-symmetry Brillouin zone (BZ) points of the magnetic orders. At intermediate and high energies, broad multi-spinon continua emerge across the BZ, providing a distinct mechanism for magnon decay and spectral broadening beyond the conventional multi-magnon decay scenario. Finally, we study the model Hamiltonian of candidate Kitaev material α-RuCl3. The zigzag ground state agrees qualitatively with experiments, its stability under external magnetic field also exhibits strong anisotropy in the field directions, and broad scattering continua are recovered similar to those observed experimentally.
We present an augmented parton mean-field theory which (i) reproduces the exact ground state, spectrum, and dynamics of the quantum spin-liquid phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model, and (ii) is amenable to the inclusion of integrability breaking terms, allowing a perturbation theory from a controlled starting point. Thus, we exemplarily study dynamical spin correlations of the honeycomb Kitaev quantum spin liquid within the $K\ensuremath{-}J\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ model, which includes Heisenberg and symmetric-anisotropic (pseudodipolar) interactions. This allows us to trace changes of the correlations in the regime of slowly moving fluxes, where the theory captures the dominant deviations when integrability is lost. These include an asymmetric shift together with a broadening of the dominant peak in the response as a function of frequency, the generation of further-neighbor correlations and their structure in real and spin space, and a resulting loss of an approximate rotational symmetry of the structure factor in reciprocal space. We discuss the limitations of this approach and also view the neutron-scattering experiments on the putative proximate quantum spin-liquid material $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ in the light of the results from this extended parton theory.
Schwinger boson perturbation theory for spin-S Kitaev-Heisenberg magnets: phase diagram and dynamical response near Kitaev spin liquids
We develop a Schwinger boson perturbative framework for the spin-S Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The spin-liquid saddle point of the pure Kitaev model is used as the unperturbed state, and magnetic instabilities and dynamical spin correlations are evaluated around this saddle point. We decompose the Hamiltonian exactly into two parts by exploiting the Klein duality intrinsic to the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. We perform the random-phase approximation by taking the part invariant under the duality transformation as the unperturbed term and treating the remaining term, which changes sign under it, as the perturbation. We determine the phase boundaries separating the quantum spin-liquid regimes from the adjacent magnetically ordered phases for S=1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2. The spin-liquid regions shrink rapidly with increasing S and become very narrow at S=2. We also compute the spin dynamics of the spin-S Kitaev-Heisenberg model, focusing on S=1, and find that the dressed dynamical spin structure factor retains a broad two-spinon continuum at finite energies, while the low-energy spectral weight softens at the ordering wave vectors of the adjacent magnetic phases. Our framework thus enables thermodynamic-limit calculations of spin dynamics near magnetic instabilities.
The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL) is an exotic emergent state of matter exhibiting Majorana fermion and gauge flux excitations. The magnetic insulator alpha-RuCl3 is thought to realize a proximate KQSL. We used neutron scattering on single crystals of alpha-RuCl3 to reconstruct dynamical correlations in energy-momentum space. We discovered highly unusual signals, including a column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center, which is very stable with temperature. This finding is consistent with scattering from the Majorana excitations of a KQSL. Other, more delicate experimental features can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. Our results encourage further study of this prototypical material and may open a window into investigating emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials.
Detecting spin dynamics in quantum spin liquids presents significant challenges. Here, the authors explore photoinduced excitations in the Kitaev spin liquid candidate $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-RuCl3 using heterodyne transient grating spectroscopy. This method allows for a comprehensive characterization of different photoinduced components. They identify signatures of spin excitations within the Kitaev paramagnetic phase. The two distinct lifetimes observed in this temperature regime, on the order of tens of picoseconds, likely correspond to the dynamics of unconventional spin excitations predicted by the Kitaev model.
Understanding the nature of the excitation spectrum in quantum spin liquids is of fundamental importance, in particular for the experimental detection of candidate materials. However, current theoretical and numerical techniques have limited capabilities, especially in obtaining the dynamical structure factor, which gives a crucial characterization of the ultimate nature of the quantum state and may be directly assessed by inelastic neutron scattering. In this work, we investigate the low-energy properties of the S ¼ 1=2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, including both nearest-neighbor J 1 and next-nearestneighbor J 2 superexchanges, by a dynamical variational Monte Carlo approach that allows accurate results on spin models. For J 2 ¼ 0, our calculations are compatible with the existence of a well-defined magnon in the whole Brillouin zone, with gapless excitations at K points (i.e., at the corners of the Brillouin zone). The strong renormalization of the magnon branch (also including rotonlike minima around the M points, i.e., midpoints of the border zone) is described by our Gutzwiller-projected state, where Abrikosov fermions are subject to a nontrivial magnetic π flux threading half of the triangular plaquettes. When increasing the frustrating ratio J 2 =J 1 , we detect a progressive softening of the magnon branch at M, which eventually becomes gapless within the spin-liquid phase. This feature is captured by the band structure of the unprojected wave function (with two Dirac points for each spin component). In addition, we observe an intense signal at low energies around the K points, which cannot be understood within the unprojected picture and emerges only when the Gutzwiller projection is considered, suggesting the relevance of gauge fields for the low-energy physics of spin liquids.
