Abstract

Understanding the nature of the excitation spectrum in quantum spin liquids is of fundamental importance, in particular for the experimental detection of candidate materials. However, current theoretical and numerical techniques have limited capabilities, especially in obtaining the dynamical structure factor, which gives a crucial characterization of the ultimate nature of the quantum state and may be directly assessed by inelastic neutron scattering. In this work, we investigate the low-energy properties of the S ¼ 1=2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, including both nearest-neighbor J 1 and next-nearestneighbor J 2 superexchanges, by a dynamical variational Monte Carlo approach that allows accurate results on spin models. For J 2 ¼ 0, our calculations are compatible with the existence of a well-defined magnon in the whole Brillouin zone, with gapless excitations at K points (i.e., at the corners of the Brillouin zone). The strong renormalization of the magnon branch (also including rotonlike minima around the M points, i.e., midpoints of the border zone) is described by our Gutzwiller-projected state, where Abrikosov fermions are subject to a nontrivial magnetic π flux threading half of the triangular plaquettes. When increasing the frustrating ratio J 2 =J 1 , we detect a progressive softening of the magnon branch at M, which eventually becomes gapless within the spin-liquid phase. This feature is captured by the band structure of the unprojected wave function (with two Dirac points for each spin component). In addition, we observe an intense signal at low energies around the K points, which cannot be understood within the unprojected picture and emerges only when the Gutzwiller projection is considered, suggesting the relevance of gauge fields for the low-energy physics of spin liquids.

Dynamical signatures of symmetry-broken and liquid phases in an S = 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

Markus Drescher, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Roderich Moessner +1 more

We present the dynamical spin structure factor of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2} {J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice obtained from large-scale matrix-product state simulations. The high frustration due to the combination of antiferromagnetic nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions yields a rich phase diagram. We resolve the low-energy excitations both in the ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ ordered phase and in the putative spin-liquid phase at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.125$. In the ordered phase, we observe an avoided decay of the lowest magnon branch, demonstrating the robustness of this phenomenon in the presence of gapless excitations. Our findings in the spin-liquid phase chime with the field-theoretical predictions for a gapless Dirac spin liquid, in particular the picture of low-lying monopole excitations at the corners of the Brillouin zone. We comment on possible practical difficulties of distinguishing proximate liquid and solid phases based on the dynamical structure factor.

Dynamics and stability of U(1) spin liquids beyond mean-field theory: Triangular-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model

Josef Willsher, Johannes Knolle

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are long-range entangled phases of frustrated magnets exhibiting fractionalised spin excitations. In two dimensions, there is limited analytical understanding of their excitation spectra beyond parton mean-field theories, which fail to capture many features of the finite frequency dynamical response. We use a self-consistent mean-field theory combined with the random phase approximation (RPA) for the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice to describe the strong spinon-spinon interactions of the U(1) Dirac QSL. We obtain quantitative results for the dynamical spin structure factor and phase diagram compatible with comprehensive numerical efforts. We show the continuum response at the Brillouin zone corners is described by a spinon-exciton hybridised with monopole gauge excitations. We further show that the transition from the QSL to 120-degree coplanar order is in the QED$_3$ O(3)-GN universality class. We extend the method to chiral QSLs and XXZ anisotropy, and discuss its broad range of applicability to other models and for describing inelastic neutron scattering experiments in KYbSe$_2$.

Monopole excitations in the U ( 1 ) Dirac spin liquid on the triangular lattice

Sasank Budaraju, Alberto Parola, Yasir Iqbal +2 more

The $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid might realize an exotic phase of matter whose low-energy properties are described by quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions, where gapless modes exist but spinons and gauge fields are strongly coupled. Its existence was proposed in frustrated Heisenberg models in the presence of frustrating superexchange interactions by the (Abrikosov) fermionic representation of the spin operators [Wen, Phys. Rev. B 65, 165113 (2002)], supplemented by the Gutzwiller projection. Here, we construct charge-$Q$ monopole excitations in the Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor (${J}_{1}$) and next-nearest-neighbor (${J}_{2}$) couplings. In the highly frustrated regime, singlet and triplet monopoles with $Q=1$ become gapless in the thermodynamic limit; in addition, the energies for generic $Q$ agree with field-theoretical predictions, obtained for a large number of gapless fermion modes. Finally, we consider localized gauge excitations, in which magnetic $\ensuremath{\pi}$ fluxes are concentrated in the triangular plaquettes (in analogy with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ visons), showing that these kinds of states do not play a relevant role at low energies. All our findings lend support to a stable $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid in the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice.

Dynamical structure factor of the J1−J2 Heisenberg model in one dimension: The variational Monte Carlo approach

Francesco Ferrari, Alberto Parola, Sandro Sorella +1 more

The dynamical spin structure factor is computed within a variational framework to study the one-dimensional ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model. Starting from Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions, the low-energy spectrum is constructed from two-spinon excitations. The direct comparison with Lanczos calculations on small clusters demonstrates the excellent description of both gapless and gapped (dimerized) phases, including incommensurate structures for ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}>0.5$. Calculations on large clusters show how the intensity evolves when increasing the frustrating ratio and give an unprecedented accurate characterization of the dynamical properties of (nonintegrable) frustrated spin models.

Dynamical properties of Néel and valence-bond phases in the J 1 – J 2 model on the honeycomb lattice

Francesco Ferrari, Federico Becca

Abstract By using a variational Monte Carlo technique based upon Gutzwiller-projected fermionic states, we investigate the dynamical structure factor of the antiferromagnetic S = 1/2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, in presence of first-neighbor ( J 1 ) and second-neighbor ( J 2 ) couplings, for J 2 < 0.5 J 1 . The ground state of the system shows long-range antiferromagnetic order for J 2 / J 1 ≲ 0.23 (Néel phase), plaquette valence-bond order for 0.23 ≲ J 2 / J 1 ≲ 0.36, and columnar dimer order for J 2 / J 1 ≳ 0.36. Within the Néel phase, a well-defined magnon mode is observed, whose dispersion is in relatively good agreement with linear spin-wave approximation for J 2 = 0. When a nonzero second-neighbor super-exchange is included, a roton-like mode develops around the K point (i.e., the corner of the Brillouin zone). This mode softens when J 2 / J 1 is increased and becomes gapless at the transition point, J 2 / J 1 ≈ 0.23. Here, a broad continuum of states is clearly visible in the dynamical spectrum, suggesting that nearly-deconfined spinon excitations could exist, at least at relatively high energies. For larger values of J 2 / J 1 , valence-bond order is detected and the spectrum of the system becomes clearly gapped, with a triplon mode at low energies. This is particularly evident for the spectrum of the dimer valence-bond phase, in which the triplon mode is rather well separated from the continuum of excitations that appears at higher energies.

Dynamical dimer structure factor of the triangular $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Markus Drescher, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Roderich Moessner +2 more

The dynamical dimer structure factor is an observable probing spin-singlet excitations of quantum magnets distinct from those commonly studied by the spin structure factor. We report the dimer response for the extended spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice using large-scale GPU-accelerated matrix-product-state simulations. We investigate the ordered phases with $120^\circ$ coplanar, collinear stripe, and tetrahedral spin order, as well as candidate quantum spin-liquid (QSL) regimes, comprising an expected gapless $U(1)$ Dirac QSL and a chiral QSL at finite spin-scalar-chirality coupling. In the ordered phases, we find low-energy modes below the onset of the two-magnon continuum illustrating avoided quasiparticle decay. Within the candidate gapless QSL, we observe absolute dispersion minima at momenta of half the Brillouin zone corners, $X\equiv K/2$, in agreement with field-theory predictions that singlet monopole excitations of the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid become gapless at these points. Thus, the high-resolution dynamical dimer response provides support for a $U(1)$ Dirac QSL with singlet monopole excitations.
