Quantum fluctuations beyond the Gutzwiller approximation

Abstract

We present a simple scheme to evaluate linear response functions including quantum fluctuation corrections on top of the Gutzwiller approximation. The method is derived for a generic multiband lattice Hamiltonian without any assumption about the dynamics of the variational correlation parameters that define the Gutzwiller wavefunction, and which thus behave as genuine dynamical degrees of freedom that add on those of the variational uncorrelated Slater determinant. We apply the method to the standard half-filled single-band Hubbard model. We are able to recover known results, but, as by-product, we also obtain few novel ones. In particular, we show that quantum fluctuations can reproduce almost quantitatively the behaviour of the uniform magnetic susceptibility uncovered by dynamical mean field theory, which, though enhanced by correlations, is found to be smooth across the paramagnetic Mott transition. By contrast, the simple Gutzwiller approximation predicts that susceptibility to diverge at the transition.

The Out-of-Equilibrium Time-Dependent Gutzwiller Approximation

Michele Fabrizio

We review the recently proposed extension of the Gutzwiller approximation, M. Schiro' and M. Fabrizio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 076401 (2010), designed to describe the out-of-equilibrium time-evolution of a Gutzwiller-type variational wave function for correlated electrons. The method, which is strictly variational in the limit of infinite lattice-coordination, is quite general and flexible, and it is applicable to generic non-equilibrium conditions, even far beyond the linear response regime. As an application, we discuss the quench dynamics of a single-band Hubbard model at half-filling, where the method predicts a dynamical phase transition above a critical quench that resembles the sharp crossover observed by time-dependent dynamical mean field theory. We next show that one can actually define in some cases a multi-configurational wave function combination of a whole set of mutually orthogonal Gutzwiller wave functions. The Hamiltonian projected in that subspace can be exactly evaluated and is equivalent to a model of auxiliary spins coupled to non-interacting electrons, closely related to the slave-spin theories for correlated electron models. The Gutzwiller approximation turns out to be nothing but the mean-field approximation applied to that spin-fermion model, which displays, for any number of bands and integer fillings, a spontaneous $Z_2$ symmetry breaking that can be identified as the Mott insulator-to-metal transition.

Collective magnetic fluctuations in Hubbard plaquettes captured by fluctuating local field method

Alexey N. Rubtsov, E. A. Stepanov, Alexander I. Lichtenstein

We establish a way to handle main collective fluctuations in correlated quantum systems based on a fluctuating local field concept. This technique goes beyond standard mean-field approaches, such as Hartree-Fock and dynamical mean-field theories (DMFT), as it includes a fluctuating classical field that acts on the leading order parameter of the system. Effective model parameters of this theory are determined from the variational principle, which allows one to resolve the Fierz ambiguity in decoupling of the local interaction term. In the saddle-point approximation for the fluctuating field our method reproduces the mean-field result. The exact numerical integration over this field allows one to consider nonlinear fluctuations of the global order parameter of the system while local correlations can be accounted for by solving the DMFT impurity problem. We apply our method to the magnetic susceptibility of finite Hubbard systems at half-filling and demonstrate that the introduced technique leads to a superior improvement of results with respect to parental mean-field approaches, without significant numerical complications. We show that the fluctuating local field method can be used in a very broad range of temperatures substantially below the N\'eel temperature of DMFT, which remains a major challenge for all existing theoretical approaches.

Linear-Response Dynamics from the Time-Dependent Gutzwiller Approximation

Massimo Capone, J. Lorenzana, G. Seibold

Within a Lagrangian formalism, we derive the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation for general multi-band Hubbard models. Our approach explicitly incorporates the coupling between time-dependent variational parameters and a time-dependent density matrix from which we obtain dynamical correlation functions in the linear-response regime. Our results are illustrated for the one-band model where we show that the interacting system can be mapped to an effective problem of fermionic quasiparticles coupled to 'doublon' (double occupancy) bosonic fluctuations. The latter have an energy on the scale of the on-site Hubbard repulsion U in the dilute limit but become soft at the Brinkman–Rice transition, which is shown to be related to an emerging conservation law of doublon charge and the associated gauge invariance. Coupling with the boson mode produces a structure in the charge response and we find that a similar structure appears in dynamical mean-field theory.

Extending the Gutzwiller approximation to intersite interactions

Garry Goldstein, Nicola Lanatà, Gabriel Kotliar

We develop an extension of the Gutzwiller approximation (GA) formalism that includes the effects of Coulomb interactions of arbitrary range (including density density, exchange, pair hopping, and Coulomb-assisted hopping terms). This formalism reduces to the ordinary GA formalism for the multiband Hubbard models in the presence of only local interactions. This is accomplished by combining the $1/z$ expansion---where $z$ is the coordination number, and only the leading-order terms contribute in the limit of infinite dimensions---with a ${P}_{R}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}{P}_{R}\ensuremath{-}I$ expansion, where ${P}_{R}$ is the Gutzwiller projector on the site $R$. The method is conveniently formulated in terms of a Gutzwiller Lagrange function. We apply our theory to the extended single-band Hubbard model. Similarly to the usual Brinkman-Rice mechanism, we find a Mott transition. A valence skipping transition is observed, where the occupation of the empty and doubly occupied states for the Gutzwiller wave function is enhanced with respect to the uncorrelated Slater determinant wave function.

Gutzwiller scheme for electrons and phonons: The half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

Paolo Barone, Roberto Raimondi, Massimo Capone +2 more

We analyze the ground-state properties of strongly correlated electrons coupled with phonons by means of a generalized Gutzwiller wave function, which includes phononic degrees of freedom. We study in detail the paramagnetic half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model, where the electron-electron interaction can lead to a Mott transition and the electron-phonon coupling to a bipolaronic transition. We critically discuss the quality of the proposed wave function in describing the various transitions and crossovers that occur as a function of the parameters. Previous variational attempts are recovered as particular choices of the wave function, while keeping all the variational freedom allows to access regions of the phase diagram, otherwise inaccessible within previous variational approaches.
