On the localized quantum oscillators in a common heat bath

Abstract

To remedy the failure of minimal coupling method in describing the quantum dynamics of two localized Brownian oscillators interacting with a common medium, a scheme is introduced to model the medium by a continuum of complex scalar fields or equivalently two independent real scalar fields. The starting point is a Lagrangian of the total system and quantization is achieved in the framework of canonical quantization. The equations of motion, memory or response functions and fluctuation–dissipation relations are obtained. An induced force between oscillators is obtained originating from the fluctuations of the medium. Ohmic and non-Ohmic regimes are discussed and the positions of oscillators are obtained approximately in large time limit and weak coupling regime. Quantum entanglement between localized oscillators is obtained in zero temperature and strong coupling regime.

Non-Markovian dynamics, nonlocality, and entanglement in quantum Brownian motion

K. Shiokawa

The dynamical aspects of quantum Brownian motion at low temperatures are investigated. Exact calculations of quantum entanglement among two Brownian oscillators are given without invoking the Born-Markov or Born approximation widely used for the study of open systems. Nonlocality due to finite oscillator separation is studied. Our approach is applicable for arbitrary time scale, in particular suitable to probe the short-time regime at cold temperatures where many experiments on quantum information processing are performed. We study separability criteria based on the uncertainty relation, negativity, and entanglement of formation. We found a crossover behavior in a disentanglement process between quantum- and thermal-fluctuation-dominated regimes. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is violated for two Brownian particles interacting with a common environment. The deviation from the relation originates in the interaction mediated by the environment, which drives two particles into a steady oscillatory state, preventing the system from thermalizing. Consequently there is a residual entanglement at low temperatures for arbitrary coupling strength. This entanglement is generated from the environment nonperturbatively even when two modes are not entangled initially. When the distance between two oscillators is varied, competition between entanglement induced from the environment and modified decoherence due to finite separation leads to the characteristic distance where entanglement is minimized.

Quantum Brownian motion of multipartite systems and their entanglement dynamics

Christen H. Fleming, Albert Roura, B. L. Hu

We solve the model of N quantum Brownian oscillators linearly coupled to an environment of quantum oscillators at finite temperature, with no extra assumptions about the structure of the system-environment coupling. Using a compact phase-space formalism, we give a rather quick and direct derivation of the master equation and its solutions for general spectral functions and arbitrary temperatures. Since our framework is intrinsically nonperturbative, we are able to analyze the entanglement dynamics of two oscillators coupled to a common scalar field in previously unexplored regimes, such as off resonance and strong coupling.

Independent-oscillator model and the quantum Langevin equation for an oscillator: a review

Aritra Ghosh, Malay Bandyopadhyay, Sushanta Dattagupta +1 more

Abstract This review provides a brief and quick introduction to the quantum Langevin equation for an oscillator, while focusing on the steady-state thermodynamic aspects. A derivation of the quantum Langevin equation is carefully outlined based on the microscopic model of the heat bath as a collection of a large number of independent quantum oscillators, the so-called independent-oscillator model. This is followed by a discussion on the relevant ‘weak-coupling’ limit. In the steady state, we analyze the quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem which has generated a considerable amount of interest in recent literature. The free energy, entropy, specific heat, and third law of thermodynamics are discussed for one-dimensional quantum Brownian motion in a harmonic well. Following this, we explore some aspects of dissipative diamagnetism in the context of quantum Brownian oscillators, emphasizing upon the role of confining potentials and also upon the environment-induced classical-quantum crossover. We discuss situations where the system-bath coupling is via the momentum variables by focusing on a gauge-invariant model of momentum-momentum coupling in the presence of a vector potential; for this problem, we derive the quantum Langevin equation and discuss quantum thermodynamic functions. Finally, the topic of fluctuation theorems is discussed (albeit, briefly) in the context of classical and quantum cyclotron motion of a particle coupled to a heat bath.

Hamiltonian of mean force and a damped harmonic oscillator in an anisotropic medium

Marjan Jafari, Fardin Kheirandish

Abstract The quantum dynamics of a damped harmonic oscillator is investigated in the presence of an anisotropic heat bath. The medium is modeled by a continuum of three dimensional harmonic oscillators and anisotropic coupling is treated by introducing tensor coupling functions. Starting from a classical Lagrangian, the total system is quantized in the framework of the canonical quantization. Following the Fano technique, the Hamiltonian of the system is diagonalized in terms of creation and annihilation operators that are linear combinations of the basic dynamical variables. Using the diagonalized Hamiltonian, the mean force internal energy, free energy and entropy of the damped oscillator are calculated.

An Exact Markovian Decoherence Dynamics of Two Interacting Harmonic Oscillators Coupled to a Bosonic Heat Bath

Gábor Homa, Dávid Hamar, József Zsolt Bernád +2 more

Abstract We present an exact analytical solution of the Hu–Paz–Zhang master equation in a precise Markovian limit for a system of two harmonically coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a common thermal bath of harmonic oscillators. The thermal bath is initially considered to be at arbitrary temperatures and characterized by an Ohmic Lorentz–Drude spectral density. In the examined system, couplings between the two harmonic oscillators and the environment ensure a complete decoupling of the center-of-mass and relative degrees of freedom, resulting in undamped dynamics in the relative coordinate. The exact time evolution is used to analyze the system’s entanglement dynamics, quantified through logarithmic negativity and quantum mutual information, while ensuring the positivity of the density operator to confirm the physical validity of the results. We demonstrate that, under certain parameter regimes and initial conditions, the asymptotic dynamics can give rise to periodic entanglement-disentanglement behavior. Furthermore, numerical simulations reveal that for negative values of the direct coupling between the oscillators, which are sufficiently close to a critical lower bound beyond which the system becomes unstable, the system can maintain entanglement across a broad temperature range and for arbitrarily long durations.

Steady-state entanglement and heat current of two coupled qubits in two baths without rotating wave approximation*

Meijiao Wang, Yun‐Jie Xia

We study the steady-state entanglement and heat current of two coupled qubits, in which two qubits are connected with two independent heat baths (IHBs) or two common heat baths (CHBs). We construct the master equation in the eigenstate representation of two coupled qubits to describe the dynamics of the total system and derive the solutions in the steady-state with stronger coupling regime between two qubits than qubit–baths. We do not make the rotating wave approximation (RWA) for the qubit–qubit interaction, and so we are able to investigate the behaviors of the system in both the strong coupling regime and the weak coupling regime, respectively. In an equilibrium bath, we find that the entanglement decreases with the bath temperature and energy detuning increasing under the strong coupling regime. In the weak coupling regime, the entanglement increases with coupling strength increasing and decreases with the bath temperature and energy detuning increasing. In a nonequilibrium bath, the entanglement without RWA is useful for entanglement at lower temperatures. We also study the heat currents of the two coupled qubits and their variations with the energy detuning, coupling strength and low temperature. In the strong (weak) coupling regime, the heat current increases (decreases) with coupling strength increasing when the temperature of one bath is lower (higher) than the other, and the energy detuning leads to a positive (negative) effect when the temperature is low (high). In the weak coupling regime, the variation trend of heat current is opposite to that of coupling strength for the IHB case and the CHB case.
