Exploring Quantum Correlations from Discord to Entanglement

Abstract

Quantum correlations represent a fundamental tool for studies ranging from basic science to quantum technologies. Different non-classical correlations have been identified and studied, as entanglement and discord. In this Paper we explore experimentally the rich geometry of polarization Bell-diagonal states. By taking advantage of the statistical method of generation, the values of entanglement and discord along different trajectories in the space of the parameters of density matrix have been measured. The effects of sudden death of entanglement and complete "freeze" of discord were investigated in order to detect the domains with different domination of one type of quantum correlation against to other. A geometric interpretation for each considered phenomena is addressed. The observed good agreement between experiment and theory for all investigated trajectories ensures the reliability of this method.

Experimental Exploration of Quantum Correlations: Discord versus Entanglement

Quantum correlations represent a fundamental tool for studies ranging from basic science to quantum technologies. Different non-classical correlations have been identified and studied, as entanglement and discord. In view of future applications in this letter we explore experimentally the rich geometry of Bell-diagonal states, measuring the values of entanglement and discord and highlighting the effect of decoherence in real experiments.

Death and revival of the quantum discord and the measurement-induced disturbance

Miguel Gallego, Miguel Orszag

Three different quantifiers, entanglement of formation (ENT), quantum discord (QD), and measurement-induced disturbance (MID), are used to measure the quantum correlations of two qubits in a common squeezed bath. A subspace was found for initial conditions in a squeezed bath, where the system experiences no decoherence. We relate the three measurements with the “distance” from the initial condition to the decoherence free subspace, in order to study the effect of the decoherence in the quantum correlations. We show examples of a system with quantum correlations even when entanglement is null. Furthermore, we study the necessary conditions for the system to become truly classical. We found that, under certain initial conditions and at specific times, the system becomes classical and both the QD and the MID vanish, thus observing the phenomena of sudden death and revival of the quantum correlations. Finally, we observe discontinuities in the QD.

Pairwise correlations via quantum discord and its geometric measure in a four-qubit spin chain

Abdel‐Baset A. Mohamed

The dynamic of pairwise correlations, including quantum entanglement (QE) and discord (QD) with geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD), are shown in the four-qubit Heisenberg XX spin chain. The results show that the effect of the entanglement degree of the initial state on the pairwise correlations is stronger for alternate qubits than it is for nearest-neighbor qubits. This parameter results in sudden death for QE, but it cannot do so for QD and GMQD. With different values for this entanglement parameter of the initial state, QD and GMQD differ and are sensitive for any change in this parameter. It is found that GMQD is more robust than both QD and QE to describe correlations with nonzero values, which offers a valuable resource for quantum computation.

Comparison of different measures for quantum discord under non-Markovian noise

Z Y Xu, Wan Li Yang, Xianbo Xiao +1 more

Two geometric measures for quantum discord were recently proposed by Modi et al (2010 Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 080501) and Dakić et al (2010 Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 190502). We study the similarities and differences for total quantum correlations of Bell-diagonal states using these two geometry-based quantum discord and the original quantum discord. We show that, under non-Markovian dephasing channels, quantum discord and one of the geometric measures remain constant for a finite amount of time, but not the other geometric measure. However, all the three measures share a common sudden change point. Our study on critical point of sudden transition might be useful for keeping long-time total quantum correlations under decoherence.

The sudden death and sudden birth of quantum discord

Wei Xia, Jin-Xing Hou, Xiao-Hui Wang +1 more

The interaction of quantum system and its environment brings out abundant quantum phenomenons. The sudden death of quantum resources, including entanglement, quantum discord and coherence, have been studied from the perspective of quantum breaking channels (QBC). QBC of quantum resources reveal the common features of quantum resources. The definition of QBC implies the relationship between quantum resources. However, sudden death of quantum resources can also appear under some other quantum channels. We consider the dynamics of Bell-diagonal states under a stochastic dephasing noise along the z-direction, and the sudden death and sudden birth of quantum discord are investigated. Next we explain this phenomenon from the geometric structure of quantum discord. According to the above results, the states with sudden death and sudden birth can be filtered in three-parameter space. Then we provide two necessary conditions to judge which kind of noise channels can make Bell-diagonal states sudden death and sudden birth. Moreover, the relation between quantum discord and coherence indicates that the sudden death and sudden birth of quantum discord implies the sudden death and sudden birth of coherence in an optimal basis.

Non-Markovian effect on the quantum discord

Bo Wang, Zhenyu Xu, Zeqian Chen +1 more

We study the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the quantum discord by exactly solving a model consisting of two independent qubits subject to two zero-temperature non-Markovian reservoirs, respectively. Considering the two qubits initially prepared in Bell-like or extended Werner-like states, we show that there is no occurrence of the sudden death, but only instantaneous disappearance of the quantum discord at some time points, in comparison to the entanglement sudden death in the same range of the parameters of interest. This implies that the quantum discord is more useful than the entanglement to describe the quantum correlation involved in quantum systems.
