Abstract

We study a large class of models of two-dimensional quantum lattice systems with continuous symmetries, and we prove a general McBryan–Spencer–Koma–Tasaki theorem concerning algebraic decay of correlations. We present applications of our main result to the Heisenberg, Hubbard, and t - J models, and to certain models of random loops.

Some properties of correlations of quantum lattice systems in thermal equilibrium

Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Daniel Ueltschi

Simple proofs of uniqueness of the thermodynamic limit of KMS states and of the decay of equilibrium correlations are presented for a large class of quantum lattice systems at high temperatures. New quantum correlation inequalities for general Heisenberg models are described. Finally, a simplified derivation of a general result on power-law decay of correlations in 2D quantum lattice systems with continuous symmetries is given, extending results of McBryan and Spencer for the 2D classical XY model.

On classical and quantum lattice spin systems

Costanza Benassi

This thesis focuses on some results about quantum and classical lattice spin systems. We study a wide class of two-dimensional quantum models which enjoy a U(1) symmetry. Using the so called complex rotation method we show that the decay of the relevant correlation functions is at least algebraically fast. We provide some examples of relevant models which belong to our class. We review some results present in the literature concerning the so called GriffthsGinibre inequalities for the classical XY model and propose a generalisation to its quantum counterpart. Correlation inequalities indeed hold for the quantum XY model with spin- 1 2 and for the ground state of the spin-1 system. We propose some applications of these results, namely that the infinite volume limit of some correlation functions exists and that it is possible to compare quenched and annealed averages for a quantum XY model with random couplings. We investigate loop representations for O(n) classical spin systems. We propose a generalised random current representation and show its relationship with the Brydges-Fröhlich-Spencer one. We review some conjectures regarding the expected behaviour of these loop models { namely that macroscopic loops appear and their lengths are distributed according to a Poisson-Dirichlet distribution. We propose some arguments in favour of these conjectures for O(n) loop models, using a mix of exact results and heuristic considerations. In order to do so we de ne a stochastic process which is an effective split-merge process for macroscopic loops and we reformulate some correlation functions for the O(2) spin system in terms of loop properties.

Quantum fluctuations in quantum lattice-systems with continuous symmetry 1

Tsutomu Momoi

We discuss conditions for the absence of spontaneous breakdown of continuous symmetries in quantum lattice systems at T = 0. Our analysis is based on Pitaevskii and Stringari’s idea that the uncertainty relation can be employed to show quantum fluctuations. For the one-dimensional systems, it is shown that the ground state is invariant under the continuous transformation if a certain uniform susceptibility is finite. For the two- and three-dimensional systems, it is shown that truncated correlation functions cannot decay any more rapidly than |r | −d+1 whenever the continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken. Both of these phenomena occur owing to quantum fluctuations. Our theorems cover a wide class of quantum lattice-systems having not-too-long-range interactions.

Spectral gap and decay of correlations in U(1)-symmetric lattice systems in dimensions D<2

Tohru Koma

We consider many-body systems with a global U(1) symmetry on a class of lattices with the (fractal) dimension D<2 and their zero temperature correlations whose observables behave as a vector under the U(1) rotation. For a wide class of the models, we prove that if there exists a spectral gap above the ground state, then the correlation functions have a stretched exponentially decaying upper bound. This is an extension of the McBryan-Spencer method at finite temperatures to zero temperature. The class includes quantum spin and electron models on the lattices, and our method also allows finite or infinite (quasi)degeneracy of the ground state. The resulting bounds rule out the possibility of the corresponding magnetic and electric long-range orders.

Decay of transverse correlations in quantum Heisenberg models

Jakob E. Björnberg, Daniel Ueltschi

We study a class of quantum spin systems that include the S=12 Heisenberg and XY-models and prove that two-point correlations exhibit exponential decay in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The field is not necessarily constant, it may be random, and it points in the same direction. Our proof is entirely probabilistic and it relies on a random loop representations of the correlation functions, on stochastic domination and on first-passage percolation.

Random loop representations for quantum spin systems

Daniel Ueltschi

Abstract. We describe random loop models and their relations to a family of quantum spin systems on finite graphs. The family includes spin 1 2 Heisenberg models with possibly anisotropic spin interactions and certain spin 1 models with SU(2)-invariance. Quantum spin correlations are given by loop correlations. Decay of correlations is proved in 2D-like graphs, and occurrence of macroscopic loops is proved in the cubic lattice in dimensions 3 and higher. As a consequence, a magnetic long-range order is rigorously established for the spin 1 model, thus confirming the presence of a nematic phase.
