Decay of superconducting correlations for gauged electrons in dimensions D ≤ 4

Abstract

We study lattice superconductors coupled to gauge fields, such as an attractive Hubbard model in electromagnetic fields, with a standard gauge fixing. We prove upper bounds for a two-point Cooper pair correlation at finite temperatures in spatial dimensions D ≤ 4. The upper bounds decay exponentially in three dimensions and by power law in four dimensions. These imply the absence of the superconducting long-range order for the Cooper pair amplitude as a consequence of fluctuations of the gauge fields. Since our results hold for the gauge fixing Hamiltonian, they cannot be obtained as a corollary of Elitzur’s theorem.

Decay of superconducting and magnetic correlations in one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models

Tohru Koma, Hal Tasaki

In a general class of one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models, we prove upper bounds for the two-point correlation functions at finite temperatures for electrons, electron pairs, and spin. The upper bounds decay exponentially in one dimension, and with power laws in two dimensions. The bounds rule out the possibility of the corresponding condensation of superconducting electron pairs, and of the corresponding magnetic ordering. Our method is general enough to cover other models such as the t-J model.

$π$ Flux Phase and Superconductivity for Lattice Fermions Coupled to Classical Gauge Fields

Tohru Koma

We study superconducting lattice fermions coupled to classical gauge fields. Namely, without the gauge fields, the lattice fermions show superconducting long-range order. In the previous paper, the existence of the long-range order was proved by the present author. This paper is the continuing part of the previous one. More precisely, the interactions between fermions were assumed to be a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type pairing which is a nearest-neighbour two-body interaction on the hypercubic lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with the dimension $d\ge 3$. In the present paper, we deal with the corresponding gauged model by introducing classical U(1) gauge fields. We prove that a certain configuration of gauge fields which yields the $π$ flux for all the plaquettes in the lattice minimizes the ground-state energy of the fermion system. Since this configuration of the gauge fields exactly coincides with the hopping amplitudes of the Hamiltonian of the previous paper, the ground state of the whole system shows superconducting long-range order. Any configuration of gauge fields which is gauge-equivalent to this special configuration of the gauge fields also yields another ground state. However, if the Cooper pair correlations are averaged over the gauge-equivalent class, then they are vanishing except for the on-site correlation because the Cooper pair correlations are not necessarily gauge invariant. On the other hand, the string Cooper pair correlations which are gauge invariant always show the same long-range order for any configuration of gauge fields in the gauge-equivalent class.

Superconducting fluctuations in the Hubbard model with an attractive on-site interaction in one dimension

P. Schlottmann, Kong-Ju-Bock Lee

The low-temperature thermodynamics of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with attractive on-site interaction of the electrons is discussed within the framework of the Bethe ansatz for the wave function. At low T the dominant states consist of spin-paired electrons (Cooper-pair-like) and excitations of such pairs (without breaking up the singlet bound states). A critical field Hc (energy required to depair a Cooper pair) is obtained at T=0 (note that the superconducting Tc =0), which disappears for T≠0. There is no magnetic response at T=0 for H<Hc . The one-electron correlation function falls off exponentially with distance, while the singlet pair–singlet pair correlation decreases with a power law. The specific heat is linear in temperature, which is possibly a consequence of the dimension. The elementary excitations of the system are discussed. The excitation spectrum shows some analogies to that of resonant valence bonds in two dimensions.

Magnetic and pairing correlations in correlated electron systems

Gang Su

Magnetic and superconducting pairing correlation functions in a general class of Hubbard models, the t - J model and a single-band Hubbard model with additional bond - charge interaction are investigated. Some rigorous upper bounds of the corresponding correlation functions are obtained. It is found that the decay of the spin - spin correlation function with temperature in the general Hubbard models cannot be slower than the inverse square law at low temperatures and the inverse law at high temperatures, while the on-site pairing correlation function cannot be slower than the inverse law. An upper bound for the average energy of the t - J model is found. The upper bounds for the spin - spin and the electron pairing correlation functions in the t - J model as well as in the Hubbard model with bond - charge interaction are also obtained. These bounds are expected to provide certain standards for approximate methods. In some special cases, these bounds rule out the possibility of corresponding magnetic and pairing long-range order.

Correlation Decay in Fermionic Lattice Systems with Power-Law Interactions at Nonzero Temperature

Senaida Hernández-Santana, Christian Gogolin, J. I. Cirac +1 more

We study correlations in fermionic lattice systems with long-range interactions in thermal equilibrium. We prove a bound on the correlation decay between anticommuting operators and generalize a long-range Lieb-Robinson-type bound. Our results show that in these systems of spatial dimension D with, not necessarily translation invariant, two-site interactions decaying algebraically with the distance with an exponent α≥2D, correlations between such operators decay at least algebraically to 0 with an exponent arbitrarily close to α at any nonzero temperature. Our bound is asymptotically tight, which we demonstrate by a high temperature expansion and by numerically analyzing density-density correlations in the one-dimensional quadratic (free, exactly solvable) Kitaev chain with long-range pairing.

Long-Range Correlation of Electron Pairs in the Hubbard Model at Finite Temperatures in Three Dimensions

Gang Su, Bao‐Heng Zhao

We show that in the translation invariant case and in the antiferromagnetic phase, the reduced density matrix ρ2 has no off-diagonal long-range order of on-site electron pairs for the single-band Hubbard model on a cubic lattice away from half filling at finite temperatures both for the positive coupling and for the negative coupling. In these cases the model can not give a mechanism for the superconductivity caused by the condensation of on-site electron pairs and the nearestneighbor electron pairs. PACS numbers: 71.10.+x, 74.20.-z, 05.30.-d. 1 It was proposed the possibility that the Hubbard model can give a mechanism to characterize high temperature superconductivity[1]. It has been shown that the η pairing states for the single band Hubbard model with constant hopping matrix element for nearest neighbor sites have ODLRO[2]. It has also been shown that in the ground state the model with negative coupling has off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) on some bipartite lattice[3]. However, as the temperature T> 0 whether the reduced density matrix ρ2 has ODLRO is inconclusive. The purpose of this work is to study the ODLRO of ρ2 in the single-band Hubbard model with constant hopping matrix element for nearest neighbor pairs on a cubic lattice at finite temperatures. In the translation invariant case we obtain an equation ( (10) in the following) which is satisfied by the long-range correlation functions of on-site electron pairs. From which we find that there is no ODLRO of on-site electron pairs. Then we consider the case with an antiferromagnetic background. In this case we will show that there is still no ODLRO of on-site electron pairs. The Hamiltonian of the model is H = −t ∑ (a † rar ′ + b † rb ∑
