In entanglement computations for a free scalar field with coupling to background curvature, there is a boundary term in the modular Hamiltonian which must be correctly specified in order to get sensible results. We focus here on the entanglement in flat space across a planar interface and (in the case of conformal coupling) other geometries related to this one by Weyl rescaling of the metric. For these “half-space entanglement” computations, we give a new derivation of the boundary term and revisit how it clears up a number of puzzles in the literature, including mass corrections and twist operator dimensions. We also discuss how related boundary terms may show up in other field theories.

We extend previous work on the perturbative expansion of the Rényi entropy, S q , around q = 1 for a spherical entangling surface in a general CFT. Applied to conformal scalar fields in various spacetime dimensions, the results appear to conflict with the known conformal scalar Rényi entropies. On the other hand, the perturbative results agree with known Rényi entropies in a variety of other theories, including theories of free fermions and vector fields and theories with Einstein gravity duals. We propose a resolution stemming from a careful consideration of boundary conditions near the entangling surface. This is equivalent to a proper treatment of total-derivative terms in the definition of the modular Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we are able to resolve an outstanding puzzle in the literature regarding the Rényi entropy of N=4 super-Yang-Mills near q = 1. A related puzzle regards the question of stationarity of the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) across a circle for a (2+1)-dimensional massive scalar field. We point out that the boundary contributions to the modular Hamiltonian shed light on the previously-observed non-stationarity. Moreover, IR divergences appear in perturbation theory about the massless fixed point that inhibit our ability to reliably calculate the REE at small non-zero mass.
We extend the holographic test of entanglement cohomology from d=2 to higher-dimensional conformal field theories. For a d-dimensional CFT with a spherical entangling region A, the vacuum modular Hamiltonian is known explicitly, and the boundary relative entropy of a primary-operator perturbation can be computed via conformal Ward identities. On the bulk side, the perturbation is dual to a scalar field in AdSd+1, and the bulk canonical energy is computed using the JLMS relation. We carry out the computation explicitly for d=3 and d=4 and find that the boundary and bulk results agree at first order in the perturbation, with identical coefficients κdΔ2/CT, where κ3=π2/12 and κ4=3π3/16. The result extends the quantitative verification of the holographic dual of entanglement cohomology beyond the d=2 case treated in the companion paper and confirms that the modular Hamiltonian perturbation is the correct holographic image of the first entanglement cohomology class. We discuss the role of the conformal anomaly, the shape of the entanglement wedge, and an outlook on TsT-deformed backgrounds. \keywords{Entanglement entropy \and Cyclic cohomology \and von Neumann algebras \and Holography \and Modular Hamiltonian}
Abstract Spacetime boundaries with canonical Neuman or Dirichlet conditions preserve conformal invarience, but “mixed” boundary conditions which interpolate linearly between them can break conformal symmetry and generate interesting Renormalization Group flows even when a theory is free, providing soluble models with nontrivial scale dependence. We compute the (Rindler) entanglement entropy for a free scalar field with mixed boundary conditions in half Minkowski space and in Anti-de Sitter space. In the latter case we also compute an additional geometric contribution, which according to a recent proposal then collectively give the 1/N corrections to the entanglement entropy of the conformal field theory dual. We obtain some perturbatively exact results in both cases which illustrate monotonic interpolation between ultraviolet and infrared fixed points. This is consistent with recent work on the irreversibility of renormalization group, allowing some assessment of the aforementioned proposal for holographic entanglement entropy and illustrating the generalization of the g-theorem for boundary conformal field theory.
We consider the universal part of entanglement entropy across a plane in flat space for a QFT, giving a non-perturbative expression in terms of a spectral function. We study the change in entanglement entropy under a deformation by a relevant operator, providing a pertrubative expansion where the terms are correlation functions in the undeformed theory. The entanglement entropy for free massive fermions and scalars easily follows. Finally, we study entanglement entropy across a plane in a background geometry that is a deformation of flat space, finding new universal terms arising from mixing of geometry and couplings of the QFT.
In this paper we consider entanglement entropies in two-dimensional conformal field theories in the presence of topological interfaces. Tracing over one side of the interface, the leading term of the entropy remains unchanged. The interface however adds a subleading contribution, which can be interpreted as a relative (Kullback-Leibler) entropy with respect to the situation with no defect inserted. Reinterpreting boundaries as topological interfaces of a chiral half of the full theory, we rederive the left/right entanglement entropy in analogy with the interface case. We discuss WZW models and toroidal bosonic theories as examples.
We study holographic entanglement entropy in 3-dimensional AdS gravity with conformal boundary conditions which fix the conformal class of the boundary metric and its extrinsic curvature, K, while leaving the Weyl mode dynamical. Extending Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Dong's replica construction, we derive the corresponding holographic entanglement entropy formula. We show that the fluctuating Weyl mode does not contribute additional entropy. The entropy of the full boundary is therefore the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and the entropy of a boundary subregion continues to obey the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, namely, the area of a minimal surface divided by 4GN. We carry out explicit calculations for global AdS, rotating and non-rotating BTZ geometries. For an interval in AdS3 we find that the K-dependent holographic entanglement entropy is governed by cm=2GN3ℓ. For a thermal state at high conformal temperatures we find that, the entropy is governed by ceff=2GN3ℓ2Kℓ−K2ℓ2−4, the same effective central charge that governs the Cardy-like density of states, in agreement with previous results in the literature. Finally, we also compute the entanglement entropy directly from the conjectured dual boundary theory - a holographic CFT coupled with time-like Liouville theory and deformed by a marginal TTˉ like operator - and find SEE=3ceffln(ε2Rsinϕ0). This result for the state with no operator insertions (vacuum state ), provides an independent boundary realization of ceff while clarifying that this state is not the state dual to global AdS.
