Abstract

Finding suitable nonlocal order parameters that distinguish various symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases is an important subject in view of experimental and numerical detection of SPT phases. By ``simulating'' the generating manifold of cobordism group in the operator formalism, the authors here propose nonlocal operations as diagnoses for SPT phases protected by point group symmetries. The nonlocal operations involve ``partial point group transformations'', which are obtained by point group transformations restricted to a spatial subregion on a given ground-state wave function. Through analytical and numerical calculations, the authors show that the complex $U(1)$ phase of the ground state expectation value of such partial point group transformations may serve as an order parameter for those SPT phases. The examples in the paper include the ${Z}_{8}$ and ${Z}_{16}$ invariants of topological superconductors protected by inversion symmetry in $(1+1)$ and $(3+1)$ dimensions, respectively, as well as the lens space topological invariants in $(2+1)$-dimensional fermionic topological phases.

Detection of two-dimensional symmetry protected topological order with partial symmetries

Alex Turzillo, Naren Manjunath, José Garre-Rubio

A method of using partial symmetries to distinguish two dimensional symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of on-site, unitary symmetries is proposed. This novel order parameter takes a wavefunction, such as a ground state of a lattice model, and detects its SPT invariants as expectation values of finitely supported operators, without the need for flux insertion. The construction exploits the rotational symmetry of the lattice to extract on-site SPT invariants, building upon prior work on probing crystalline SPT phases with partial rotations. The method is demonstrated by computing the order parameter analytically on group cohomology models and numerically on a family of states interpolating between the CZX state and a trivial state. Its robustness is suggested by interpreting partial symmetries as generating the topological partition functions of lens spaces.

Many-body topological invariants for fermionic short-range entangled topological phases protected by antiunitary symmetries

Ken Shiozaki, Hassan Shapourian, Kiyonori Gomi +1 more

Here, the authors introduce a set of quantities to diagnose symmetry-protected topological phases of fermions protected by antiunitary symmetries. These quantities, which can be written as expectation values of nonlocal operators, effectively simulate the partition function on nonorientable spacetime manifolds in the operator formalism. The important observation is that the proposed quantities are complex valued for topological states, where the complex phase is the many-body topological invariant. Numerous symmetry classes and dimensionalities are studied in detail. The key ingredient of all quantities is the ``fermionic partial transpose''. For example, the ${Z}_{2}$ topological invariant for time-reversal symmetric topological insulators in two spatial dimensions is given.

Many-Body Topological Invariants for Fermionic Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

Hassan Shapourian, Ken Shiozaki, Shinsei Ryu

We define and compute many-body topological invariants of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases, protected by an orientation-reversing symmetry, such as time-reversal or reflection symmetry. The topological invariants are given by partition functions obtained by a path integral on unoriented spacetime which, as we show, can be computed for a given ground state wave function by considering a nonlocal operation, "partial" reflection or transpose. As an application of our scheme, we study the Z_{8} and Z_{16} classification of topological superconductors in one and three dimensions.

Symmetry-twisted multi-entropies: Order parameters for 2D SPT phases

Ramanjit Sohal, Michael Levin, Ruben Verresen

Although symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTs) can be distinguished by their entanglement properties, it has been unclear how to extract this information directly from expectation values beyond the 1D case. Here, we close this gap and propose a pair of nonlocal order parameters that can detect and distinguish all bosonic SPTs in 2D protected by internal discrete, Abelian unitary symmetries. The desired topological invariants are extracted by these quantities by effectively simulating the SPT path integral on topologically non-trivial spacetime manifolds. Our order parameters are defined in terms of expectation values of partial symmetry and permutation operations acting on fixed numbers of replicas of the system in finite spatial regions. These expectation values correspond to symmetry-twisted versions of multipartite entanglement quantities known as multi-entropies. We show explicitly that our two order parameters detect symmetry-protected four-party and six-party entanglement, respectively, and we constrain possible "spurious" contributions. We analytically test our proposal in fixed-point lattice models. Our results suggest multipartite entanglement to be a defining feature of SPTs; indeed, we expect our methods to generalize to fermionic and higher-dimensional systems.

Symmetry-protected topological phases in noninteracting fermion systems

Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases with a certain symmetry, which can all be smoothly connected to the same trivial product state if we break the symmetry. For noninteracting fermion systems with time reversal ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}$), charge conjugation ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{C}$), and/or $U(1)$ ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}$) symmetries, the total symmetry group can depend on the relations between those symmetry operations, such as $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}=\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}$ or $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{T}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}=\ensuremath{-}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}$. As a result, the SPT phases of those fermion systems with different symmetry groups have different classifications. In this paper, we use Kitaev's K-theory approach to classify the gapped free-fermion phases for those possible symmetry groups. In particular, we can view the $U(1)$ as a spin rotation. We find that superconductors with the ${S}_{z}$ spin-rotation symmetry are classified by $Z$ in even dimensions, while superconductors with the time reversal plus the ${S}_{z}$ spin-rotation symmetries are classified by $Z$ in odd dimensions. We show that all 10 classes of gapped free-fermion phases can be realized by electron systems with certain symmetries. We also point out that, to properly describe the symmetry of a fermionic system, we need to specify its full symmetry group that includes the fermion number parity transformation ${(\ensuremath{-})}^{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{N}}$. The full symmetry group is actually a projective symmetry group.

Symmetry-protected topological orders for interacting fermions: Fermionic topological nonlinear σ models and a special group supercohomology theory

Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$, which can all be smoothly connected to the trivial product states if we break the symmetry. It has been shown that a large class of interacting bosonic SPT phases can be systematically described by group cohomology theory. In this paper, we introduce a (special) group supercohomology theory which is a generalization of the standard group cohomology theory. We show that a large class of short-range interacting fermionic SPT phases can be described by the group supercohomology theory. Using the data of supercocycles, we can obtain the ideal ground state wave function for the corresponding fermionic SPT phase. We can also obtain the bulk Hamiltonian that realizes the SPT phase, as well as the anomalous (i.e., non-onsite) symmetry for the boundary effective Hamiltonian. The anomalous symmetry on the boundary implies that the symmetric boundary must be gapless for (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] boundary, and must be gapless or topologically ordered beyond (1+1)D. As an application of this general result, we construct a new SPT phase in three dimensions, for interacting fermionic superconductors with coplanar spin order (which have ${T}^{2}=1$ time-reversal ${Z}_{2}^{T}$ and fermion-number-parity ${Z}_{2}^{f}$ symmetries described by a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}^{T}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$). Such a fermionic SPT state can neither be realized by free fermions nor by interacting bosons (formed by fermion pairs), and thus are not included in the $K$-theory classification for free fermions or group cohomology description for interacting bosons. We also construct three interacting fermionic SPT phases in two dimensions (2D) with a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Those 2D fermionic SPT phases all have central-charge $c=1$ gapless edge excitations, if the symmetry is not broken.
