Abstract

We observe spin squeezing in three-component Bose gases where all three hyperfine states are coupled by synthetic spin-orbit coupling. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of spin-orbit coupling, as can be seen clearly from an effective spin Hamiltonian. By solving this effective model analytically with the aid of a Holstein-Primakoff transformation for a spin-1 system in the low excitation limit, we conclude that the spin-nematic squeezing, a category of spin squeezing existing exclusively in large spin systems, is enhanced with increasing spin-orbit coupling intensity and effective Zeeman field, which correspond to Rabi frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{R}$ and two-photon detuning $\ensuremath{\delta}$ within the Raman scheme for synthetic spin-orbit coupling, respectively. These trends of dependence are in clear contrast to spin-orbit-coupling-induced spin squeezing in spin-1/2 systems. We also analyze the effects of harmonic trap and interparticle interaction with realistic experimental parameters numerically, and find that a strong harmonic trap favors spin-nematic squeezing. We further show spin-nematic squeezing can be interpreted as two-mode entanglement or two-spin squeezing at low excitation. Our findings can be observed in $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ gases with existing techniques of synthetic spin-orbit coupling and spin-selective imaging.

Spin squeezing in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Li Chen, Yunbo Zhang, Han Pu

We study the spin squeezing in a spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Under the condition of two-photon resonance and weak Raman coupling strength, the system possesses two degenerate ground states, using which we construct an effective two-mode model. The Hamiltonian of the two-mode model takes the form of the one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian, which is known to generate spin squeezing. More importantly, we show that the SOC provides a convenient control knob to adjust the spin nonlinearity responsible for spin squeezing. Specifically, the spin nonlinearity strength can be tuned to be comparable to the two-body density-density interaction, and hence is much larger than the intrinsic spin-dependent interaction strength in conventional two-component BEC systems such as $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ in the absence of the SOC. We confirm the spin squeezing by carrying out a fully beyond-mean-field numerical calculation using the truncated Wigner method. Additionally, the experimental implementation is also discussed.

Enhanced strong-interaction effect in synthetic spin-orbit coupling with mixed spin symmetry

Ayaka Usui, Abel Rojo-Francàs, James Schloss +1 more

Synthetic spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms couples the pseudospin and spatial degrees of freedom, and therefore, the inherent spin symmetry of the system plays an important role. In systems of two pseudospin degrees, two particles contain symmetric states and antisymmetric states, but the spin symmetry can be mixed for more particles. This mixed spin symmetry has been overlooked and has not been investigated thoroughly. We study the role of mixed spin symmetry in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and consider a system of three bosons with two hyperfine states trapped in a harmonic potential. We investigate the ground state and the energy spectrum by implementing exact diagonalization. Similar to that in two-particle systems, the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and repulsive interactions between antialigned pseudospins increases the population of the unaligned spin components in the ground state. Also, the emergence of mixed-spin symmetric states compensates for the rise of the interaction energy. In contrast to two-particle systems, the pair correlation of the ground state is analogous to the Tonks-Girardeau gas even for relatively small contact interactions, and this feature is enhanced by the spin-orbit coupling.

Spin and field squeezing in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Yixiao Huang, Zheng-Da Hu

Recently, strong spin-orbit coupling with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus strength has been realized in neutral atomic Bose-Einstein condensates via a pair of Raman lasers. In this report, we investigate spin and field squeezing of the ground state in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. By mapping the spin-orbit coupled BEC to the well-known quantum Dicke model, the Dicke type quantum phase transition is presented with the order parameters quantified by the spin polarization and occupation number of harmonic trap mode. This Dicke type quantum phase transition may be captured by the spin and field squeezing arising from the spin-orbit coupling. We further consider the effect of a finite detuning on the ground state and show the spin polarization and the quasi-momentum exhibit a step jump at zero detuning. Meanwhile, we also find that the presence of the detuning enhances the occupation number of harmonic trap mode, while it suppresses the spin and the field squeezing.

Orbit-induced spin squeezing in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Jinling Lian, Lixian Yu, J.-Q. Liang +2 more

In recent pioneer experiment, a strong spin-orbit coupling, with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus strengths, has been created in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. Moreover, many exotic superfluid phenomena induced by this strong spin-orbit coupling have been predicted. In this report, we show that this novel spin-orbit coupling has important applications in quantum metrology, such as spin squeezing. We first demonstrate that an effective spin-spin interaction, which is the heart for producing spin squeezing, can be generated by controlling the orbital degree of freedom (i.e., the momentum) of the ultracold atoms. Compared with previous schemes, this realized spin-spin interaction has advantages of no dissipation, high tunability, and strong coupling. More importantly, a giant squeezing factor (lower than -30 dB) can be achieved by tuning a pair of Raman lasers in current experimental setup. Finally, we find numerically that the phase factor of the prepared initial state affects dramatically on spin squeezing.

Spin-Orbit-Coupled Quantum Gases

The dissertation explores the effects of synthetic spin-orbit coupling on the behaviour of quantum gases in several different contexts. We first study realistic methods to create vortices in spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We propose two different methods to induce thermodynamically stable static vortex configurations: (1) to rotate both the Raman lasers and the anisotropic trap; and (2) to impose a synthetic Abelian field on top of synthetic spin-orbit interactions. We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for several experimentally relevant regimes and find new interesting effects such as spatial separation of left- and right-moving spin-orbit-coupled condensates, and the appearance of unusual vortex arrangements. Next we consider cold atoms in an optical lattice with synthetic SOC in the Mott-insulator regime. We calculate the parameters of the corresponding tight-binding model and derive the low-energy spin Hamiltonian which is a combination of Heisenberg model, quantum compass model and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that the Hamiltonian supports a rich classical phase diagram with collinear, spiral and vortex phases. Next we study the time evolution of the magnetization in a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas, starting from a fully-polarized initial state. We model the dynamics using a Boltzmann equation, which we solve in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The resulting non-linear system of equations gives rise to three distinct dynamical regimes controlled by the ratio of interaction and spin-orbit-coupling strength λ: for small λ, the magnetization decays to zero. For intermediate λ, it displays undamped oscillations about zero and for large λ, a partially magnetized state is dynamically stabilized. Motivated by an interesting stripe phase which appears in BEC with SOC [Li et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 225301 (2011)], we study the finite-temperature phase diagram of a pseudospin-1/2 Bose gas with contact interactions. We show that strong inter-spin interactions can lead to the appearance of magnetically ordered phases at temperatures above the superfluid transition. For the case of inter-spin attraction, we also discuss the possibility of a bosonic analogue of the Cooper-paired phase, however this state is not energetically favourable. We extend our calculations to a spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas to investigate the possibility of stripe ordering in the normal phase. However, within our approximations, we do not find an instability towards stripe formation. Finally, we consider a two-dimensional Bose gas at zero temperature with an underlying quartic single-particle dispersion in one spatial direction. This Hamiltonian can be realized using the NIST scheme of spin-orbit coupling [Y.-J. Lin, K. Jimenez-Garcia, and I. B. Spielman, Nature 471, 83 (2011)], or using the shaken lattice scheme of Parker et al. [C. V. Parker, L.-C. Ha and C. Chin, Nature Physics 9, 769 (2013)]. By numerically comparing energies of various trial wave-functions, we show that, at low densities, the ground state is strongly correlated, in contrast to a typical mean-field BEC. The trial wave-function with the lowest energy is of Jastrow-type and it describes a state with finite, but strongly reduced, condensate fraction.

Spin-orbit coupling induced geometric squeezing in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

Fei Zhu, Chunxia Guo, Rui Zhang +3 more

Squeezed states play a key role in diverse frontiers of quantum physics. Geometrically squeezed states, a squeezed state in the orbital phase space of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), have been conventionally generated by anisotropic trapping potentials. In this work, we propose a different route to generate geometric squeezing via spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a pseudospin-1/2 BEC. We show that the SOC enables effective two-phonon transitions within the lowest Landau level via virtual spin-flip processes, leading to exponential squeezing dynamics in both spin components. Furthermore, by applying a $π/2$ spin rotation, the two spin channels can be coherently coupled to produce two-mode geometric squeezing. We also investigate the influence of interatomic interactions on squeezing performance and identify parameters where robust squeezing can be achieved. Our work provides a viable pathway to realize and manipulate geometric squeezing in spinor quantum gases.
