Weak invariants of time-dependent quantum dissipative systems

Abstract

The concept of weak invariant is introduced. Then the weak invariants associated with time-dependent quantum dissipative systems are discussed in the context of master equations of the Lindblad type. In particular, with the help of the $\mathit{su}$(1,1) Lie-algebraic structure, the weak invariant is explicitly constructed for the quantum damped harmonic oscillator with the time-dependent frequency and friction coefficient. This generalizes the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant to the case of nonunitary dynamics in the Markovian approximation.

On the Lindblad equation for open quantum systems: Rényi entropy rate and weak invariants

Sumiyoshi Abe

A brief review of two recent topics on the Lindblad equation is presented. One is concerned with time evolution of the quantum Renyi entropy under the equation. The lower bound of the entropy rate is derived in a compact form. The other is about the concept of weak invariants, which generalize the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant and are defined in such a way that they are not constant but their expectation values remain invariant in time. The Lindbladian operator describing the time-dependent damped quantum oscillator is identified, and the corresponding weak invariant is explicitly constructed as an example.

Weak invariants, temporally local equilibria and isoenergetic processes described by the Lindblad equation

Congjie Ou, Sumiyoshi Abe

The concept of weak invariants is examined in the thermodynamic context. Discussions are made about the temporally local equilibrium states, corrections to them, and isoenergetic processes based on the quantum master equations of the Lindblad type that admit time-dependent Hamiltonians as weak invariants. The method for determining the correction presented here may be thought of as a quantum-mechanical analog of the Chapman-Enskog expansion in nonequilibrium classical statistical mechanics. Then, the theory is applied to the time-dependent harmonic oscillator as a simple example, and the power output and the work along an isoenergetic process are evaluated within the framework of finite-time quantum thermodynamics.

Connection between classical and quantum harmonic oscillators

Kyoungho Cho, S P Kim

For a time-dependent harmonic oscillator we show a connection between the integrals of classical equations of motion and the Lewis-Riesenfeld (LR) invariant, and express the LR invariant in terms of the integrals of classical equations of motion. As applications we find the LR invariant for the Guth-Pi Hamiltonian and the asymptotic form of the LR invariant for a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator.

The time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillator: a pedagogical approach via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method

Stanley Santiago Coelho, Lucas Queiroz, Danilo T. Alves

Abstract In quantum mechanics courses, students often solve the Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator with time-independent parameters. However, time-dependent quantum harmonic oscillators are relevant in modeling several problems as, for instance, the description of quantum motion of particles in traps, shortcuts to adiabaticity, generation of squeezed states, as well as quantum scalar fields evolving in expanding universes. In the present paper, we discuss, with a pedagogical approach, the quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency via the Lewis–Riesenfeld dynamical invariant method, revisiting the main steps to obtain the wave function associated with this model, and briefly discussing the relation between this oscillator and the generation of squeezed states. As examples of didactic applications of time-dependent harmonic oscillators and the Lewis–Riesenfeld method in quantum mechanics courses, we solve the following problems: the calculation of the transition probability associated with a harmonic oscillator which undergoes jumps in its frequency, and the analysis of the dynamics of a quantum particle in a Paul trap.

Ermakov and non-Ermakov systems in quantum dissipative models

Antonio Boulhosa Nassar

Via the hydrodynamical formulation of quantum mechanics, a unified protocol to treat the quantum time-dependent harmonic oscillator with friction is presented, described by two different models: an explicitly time-dependent, linear Schrödinger equation (Caldirola–Kanai model) and a logarithmic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (Kostin model). For the former model, an Ermakov system that makes it possible to obtain an invariant of Ermakov–Lewis-type is derived. For the latter model, a non-Ermakov system is derived instead and it is shown that neither an exact nor an approximate invariant of Ermakov–Lewis-type exists.
