Abstract

Motivated by recent studies of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, we explore the possible gapless quantum disordered phases in the $(2+1)d$ nonlinear sigma model defined on the Grassmannian manifold $\frac{U(N)}{U(n)\times U(N - n)}$ with a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term at level $k$, which is the effective low energy field theory of the boundary of certain $(3+1)d$ SPT states. With $k = 0$, this model has a well-controlled large-$N$ limit, $i.e.$ its renormalization group equations can be computed exactly with large-$N$. However, with the WZW term, the large-$N$ and large-$k$ limit alone is not sufficient for a reliable study of the nature of the quantum disordered phase. We demonstrate that through a combined large-$N$, large-$k$ and $ε-$generalization, a stable fixed point in the quantum disordered phase can be reliably located in the large$-N$ limit and leading order $ε-$expansion, which corresponds to a $(2+1)d$ strongly interacting conformal field theory.

Quantum phase transitions between bosonic symmetry-protected topological states without sign problem: Nonlinear sigma model with a topological term

Yi‐Zhuang You, Zhen Bi, Dan Mao +1 more

We propose a series of simple two-dimensional (2D) lattice interacting fermion models that we demonstrate at low energy describe bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states and quantum phase transitions between them. This is because due to interaction, the fermions are gapped both at the boundary of the SPT states and at the bulk quantum phase transition, thus these models at low energy can be described completely by bosonic degrees of freedom. We show that the bulk of these models is described by a $\mathrm{Sp}(N$) principal chiral model with a topological $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}$ term, whose boundary is described by a $\mathrm{Sp}(N$) principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino-Witten term at level 1. The quantum phase transition between SPT states in the bulk is tuned by a particular interaction term, which corresponds to tuning $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}$ in the field theory, and the phase transition occurs at $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}=\ensuremath{\pi}$. The simplest version of these models with $N=1$ is equivalent to the familiar O(4) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term, whose boundary is a $(1+1)\text{D}$ conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$. After breaking the O(4) symmetry to its subgroups, this model can be viewed as bosonic SPT states with U(1), or ${Z}_{2}$ symmetries, etc. All of these fermion models, including the bulk quantum phase transitions, can be simulated with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method without the sign problem. Recent numerical results strongly suggest that the quantum disordered phase of the O(4) NLSM with precisely $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Theta}}=\ensuremath{\pi}$ is a stable $(2+1)\text{D}$ conformal field theory with gapless bosonic modes.

Nonlinear sigma model description of deconfined quantum criticality in arbitrary dimensions

Da-Chuan Lu

In this paper, we propose using the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term as a general description of deconfined quantum critical points that separate two spontaneously symmetry-breaking (SSB) phases in arbitrary dimensions. In particular, we discuss the suitable choice of the target space of the NLSM, which is in general the homogeneous space G/K, where G G is the UV symmetry and K K is generated by {\mathfrak k}={\mathfrak h}_1\cap {\mathfrak h}_2 𝔨 = 𝔥 1 ∩ 𝔥 2 , and {\mathfrak h}_i 𝔥 i is the Lie algebra of the unbroken symmetry in each SSB phase. With this specific target space, the symmetry defects in both SSB phases are on equal footing, and their intertwinement is captured by the WZW term. The DQCP transition is then tuned by proliferating the symmetry defects. By coupling the G/K G / K NLSM with the WZW term to the background gauge field, the ’t Hooft anomaly of this theory can be determined. The bulk symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase that cancels the anomaly is described by the relative Chern-Simons term in odd spacetime dimensions or mixed \theta θ term in even dimensions. We construct and discuss a series of models with Grassmannian symmetry defects in 3+1d. We also provide the fermionic model that reproduces the G/K G / K NLSM with the WZW term.

Canonical quantization of nonlinear sigma models with a theta term and applications to symmetry-protected topological phases

Matthew F. Lapa, Taylor L. Hughes

We canonically quantize $O(D+2)$ nonlinear sigma models (NLSMs) with a theta term on arbitrary smooth, closed, connected, oriented $D$-dimensional spatial manifolds $\mathcal{M}$, with the goal of proving the suitability of these models for describing symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of bosons in $D$ spatial dimensions. We show that in the disordered phase of the NLSM, and when the coefficient $\ensuremath{\theta}$ of the theta term is an integer multiple of $2\ensuremath{\pi}$, the theory on $\mathcal{M}$ has a unique ground state and a finite energy gap to all excitations. We also construct the ground state wave functional of the NLSM in this parameter regime, and we show that it is independent of the metric on $\mathcal{M}$ and given by the exponential of a Wess-Zumino term for the NLSM field, in agreement with previous results on flat space. Our results show that the NLSM in the disordered phase and at $\ensuremath{\theta}=2\ensuremath{\pi}k$, $k\ensuremath{\in}\mathbb{Z}$, has a symmetry-preserving ground state but no topological order (i.e., no topology-dependent ground state degeneracy), making it an ideal model for describing SPT phases of bosons. Thus, our work places previous results on SPT phases derived using NLSMs on solid theoretical ground. To canonically quantize the NLSM on $\mathcal{M}$, we use Dirac's method for the quantization of systems with second class constraints, suitably modified to account for the curvature of space. In a series of four Appendixes, we provide the technical background needed to follow the discussion in the main sections of the paper.

Symmetry-protected topological orders for interacting fermions: Fermionic topological nonlinear σ models and a special group supercohomology theory

Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$, which can all be smoothly connected to the trivial product states if we break the symmetry. It has been shown that a large class of interacting bosonic SPT phases can be systematically described by group cohomology theory. In this paper, we introduce a (special) group supercohomology theory which is a generalization of the standard group cohomology theory. We show that a large class of short-range interacting fermionic SPT phases can be described by the group supercohomology theory. Using the data of supercocycles, we can obtain the ideal ground state wave function for the corresponding fermionic SPT phase. We can also obtain the bulk Hamiltonian that realizes the SPT phase, as well as the anomalous (i.e., non-onsite) symmetry for the boundary effective Hamiltonian. The anomalous symmetry on the boundary implies that the symmetric boundary must be gapless for (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] boundary, and must be gapless or topologically ordered beyond (1+1)D. As an application of this general result, we construct a new SPT phase in three dimensions, for interacting fermionic superconductors with coplanar spin order (which have ${T}^{2}=1$ time-reversal ${Z}_{2}^{T}$ and fermion-number-parity ${Z}_{2}^{f}$ symmetries described by a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}^{T}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$). Such a fermionic SPT state can neither be realized by free fermions nor by interacting bosons (formed by fermion pairs), and thus are not included in the $K$-theory classification for free fermions or group cohomology description for interacting bosons. We also construct three interacting fermionic SPT phases in two dimensions (2D) with a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Those 2D fermionic SPT phases all have central-charge $c=1$ gapless edge excitations, if the symmetry is not broken.

Surface topological quantum criticality: Conformal manifolds and discrete strong-coupling fixed points

Saran Vijayan, Fei Zhou

In this article, we study quantum critical phenomena in surfaces of symmetry-protected topological matter, i.e., surface topological quantum criticality. A generic phase boundary of gapless surfaces in a symmetry-protected state shall be a codimension one manifold in an interaction parameter space of dimension ${D}_{p}$ (where $p$ refers to the parameter space) where the value of ${D}_{p}$ further depends on bulk topologies. In the context of fermionic topological insulators that we focus on, ${D}_{p}$ depends on the number of half-Dirac cones $\mathcal{N}$. We construct such manifolds explicitly for a few interaction parameter spaces with various ${D}_{p}$ values. Most importantly, we further illustrate that in cases with ${D}_{p}=3$ and 6, there are submanifolds of fixed points that dictate the universalities of surface topological quantum criticality. These infrared stable manifolds are associated with emergent symmetries in the renormalization-group-equation flow naturally appearing in the loop expansion. Unlike in the usual order-disorder quantum critical phenomena, typically governed by an isolated Wilson-Fisher fixed point, we find in the one-loop approximation surface topological quantum criticalities are naturally captured by conformal manifolds where the number of marginal operators uniquely determines their codimensions. Isolated strong-coupling fixed points also appear, usually as the endpoints in the phase boundary of surface topological quantum phases. However, their extreme infrared instabilities along multiple directions suggest that they shall be related to multicritical surface topological quantum critical phenomena rather than generic surface topological quantum criticality. We also discuss and classify higher-loop symmetry-breaking effects, which can either distort the conformal manifolds or further break the conformal manifolds down to a few distinct fixed points.

Nonperturbative Effects of a Topological Theta Term on Principal Chiral Nonlinear Sigma Models in 2 + 1 Dimensions

Cenke Xu, Andreas W. W. Ludwig

We study the effects of a topological Theta term on 2+1-dimensional principal chiral models, which are nonlinear sigma models defined on Lie group manifolds. We find that when Θ=π, the nature of the disordered phase of the principal chiral model is strongly affected by the topological term: it is either a gapless conformal field theory, or it is gapped and twofold degenerate. The result of our Letter can be used to analyze the boundary states of three-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases.
