Abstract

We present an optimal algorithm for the three-stage arbitrary polarization tracking using Lithium-Niobate-based Polarization Controllers: device calibration, polarization state rotation, and stabilization. The theoretical model representing the lithium-niobate-based polarization controller is derived and the methodology is successfully applied. Results are numerically simulated in the MATLAB environment.

Short-length and robust polarization rotators in periodically poled lithium niobate via shortcuts to adiabaticity

Xi Chen, Hongwei Wang, Yue Ban +1 more

Conventional narrowband spectrum polarization devices are short but not robust, based on quasi-phase matching (QPM) technique, in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. In this paper, we propose short-length and robust polarization rotators by using shortcuts to adiabaticity. Beyond the QPM condition, the electric field and period of PPLN crystal are designed in terms of invariant dynamics, and further optimized with respect to input wavelength/refractive index variations. In addition, the stability of conversion efficiency on the electric field and period of PPLN crystal is also discussed. As a consequence, the optimal shortcuts are fast as well as robust, which provide broadband spectrum polarization devices with short length.

We present a complete optoelectronic unit for polarization visualization, switching and control. The system is based on an FPGA unit and comprises: an acquisition unit containing an analog polarimeter and digital-to-analog converters, an FPGA capable of implementing an optimal algorithm for three-stage arbitrary polarization tracking, and an electronic driver with analog-to-digital converters capable of interfacing with Lithium-Niobate-based Polarization Controllers. The results, determined via simulation of real-parameter devices, show that fast polarization switch is achievable.

Multifunction integrated lithium niobate photonic chip for photon pairs generation and manipulation

Tien-Dat Pham, Cheng-Chung Chiu, Pin-Ju Tsai +1 more

We report on a unique photonic quantum source chip highly integrating four-stage photonic elements in a lithium niobate (LN) waveguide circuit platform, where an aperiodically poled LN (APPLN) electro-optic (EO) polarization mode converter (PMC) is sandwiched between two identical type-0 PPLN spontaneous parametric down-converters (SPDCs), followed by an EO phase controller (PC). These core nonlinear optic and EO building blocks on the chip are systematically characterized stage by stage to show its high performance as an integrated quantum source. The APPLN EO PMC, optimally constructed by a genetic algorithm, is characterized to have a broad bandwidth (>13 nm), benefiting an efficient control of broadband type-0 SPDC photon pairs featuring a short correlation time. We demonstrate an efficient conversion of the |VV› photon-pair state generated from the first PPLN SPDC stage to the |HH› state through the APPLN EO PMC stage over its operating bandwidth, a broadband or broadly tunable polarization-entangled state can thus be possibly produced via the superposition of the |VV› state generated from the other PPLN SPDC on the third stage of the chip. Such a state can be further manipulated into two of the Bell states if the relative phases between the two polarization states can be properly modulated through the EO PC on the fourth stage of the chip. Such a multifunction integrated quantum photonic source chip can be of high value to developing a compact, efficient, and high-speed quantum information processor.
