Abstract

We numerically study the quantum phase transitions and the stability of Majorana zero modes in a generalized Kitaev model in one dimension when the chemical potential is periodically modulating in space. By using the exact diagonalization method for open boundary condition, we investigate the ground-state phases in terms of the non-local properties such as the entanglement spectrum (ES) and the string correlation functions. When we vary the phase of the modulation, the number of the Majorana zero modes changes, which manifests itself in the degeneracy of the lowest level of the ES. Next, we study the quantum phase transitions driven by the change in the amplitude of the modulation. In particular, for certain values of the wave number and the phase of the modulation, we observe a quantum phase transition from one topological phase into another where the string correlation function oscillates in space. We also show a case where the degeneracy of the ES does not change even for large enough amplitude of the modulation. Finally, we characterize the phases of the system with periodic boundary condition by the topological invariant, which reflects the number of the zero-energy excitations.

Topological phase diagrams and Majorana zero modes of the Kitaev ladder and tube

Yiming Wang, Zhidan Li, Qiang Han

In this paper, we study two quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Kitaev models with ladder-like and tube-like spatial structures, respectively. Our results provide the phase diagrams and explicit expressions of the Majorana zero modes. The topological phase diagrams are obtained by decomposing the topological invariants and the topological conditions for topologically nontrivial phases are given precisely. For systems which belongs to topological class BDI, we obtain the regions in the phase diagrams where the topological numbers show even-odd effect. For the Kitaev tube model a phase factor induced by the magnetic flux in the axial direction of the tube is introduced to alter the classification of the tube Hamiltonian from class BDI to D. The Kitaev tube of class D is characterized by the Z 2 index when the number of chains is odd while 0, 1, 2 when the number of chains is even. The phase diagrams show periodic behaviors with respect to the magnetic flux. The bulk-boundary correspondence is demonstrated by the observations that the topological conditions for the bulk topological invariant to take nontrivial values are precisely those for the existence of the Majorana zero modes.

Phase Diagram and Sweep Dynamics of a One-Dimensional Generalized Cluster Model

Takumi Ohta, Shu Tanaka, Ippei Danshita +1 more

We numerically study quantum phase transitions and dynamical properties in the one-dimensional cluster model with several interactions by using the time-evolving block decimation method for infinite systems and the exact diagonalization. First, boundaries among several quantum phases of the model are determined from energy gap and each phase is characterized by order parameters and the entanglement spectrum (ES). We confirm that in the model with open boundary condition the degeneracy of the lowest levels in the ES corresponds to that of the ground states. Then, using the time-dependent Bogoliubov transformation with open boundary condition, we investigate dynamical properties during an interaction sweep through the critical point which separates two topological phases involving four-fold degeneracy in the ground state. After a slow sweep across the critical point, we observe spatially periodic structures in the string correlation functions and the entanglement entropy. It is shown that the periodicities stem from the Bogoliubov quasiparticles generated near the critical point.

Topological phase boundary in a generalized Kitaev model

Da-Ping Liu

We study the effects of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping and nearest-neighbor interactions on topological phases in a one-dimensional generalized Kitaev model. In the noninteracting case, we define a topological number and calculate exactly the phase diagram of the system. With addition of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping, the change of phase boundary between the topological and trivial regions can be described by an effective shift of the chemical potential. In the interacting case, we obtain the entanglement spectrum, the degeneracies of which correspond to the topological edge modes, by using the infinite time-evolving block decimation method. The results show that the interactions change the phase boundary as adding an effective chemical potential which can be explained by the change of the average number of particles.

Majorana Zero Modes and Bulk-Boundary Correspondence at Quantum Criticality

S Rahul, Ravi Kumar, Y R Kartik +1 more

Majorana zero modes are well studied in the gapped phases of topological systems. We investigate Majorana zero modes at the topological quantum criticality in one dimensional topological superconducting model with longer range interaction. We identify stable localized Majorana zero modes appearing at criticality under certain conditions. Topological invariant number for these non-trivial criticalities is obtained from zeros of a complex function associated with the Hamiltonian. Behavior of parametric curve at criticalities validate the invariant obtained and account for the appearance of Majorana zero modes at criticality. Trivial and non-trivial topological nature of criticality due to the presence of multicritical point cause an unusual topological transition along the critical line. We observe and investigate this unique transition in terms of eigenvalue spectrum. Appearance of MZMs at criticality demands integer value of topological invariant number in order to validate the concept of bulk-boundary correspondence. Hence we propose a scheme to separate the invariant number into fractional and integer contribution to establish bulk-boundary correspondence at criticality.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Henry Ling, Philip Richard, Saeed Rahmanian Koshkaki +4 more

We study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana $\ensuremath{\pi}$ mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy $\ensuremath{\pi}$, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both $\ensuremath{\pi}$ and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Topological properties and Majorana Multiplicity in Zigzag Kitaev Chain

Rajiv Kumar, Panch Ram, Levan Chotorlishvili +1 more

We investigate the spectral and topological properties of a zigzag Kitaev chain constructed from two diagonally coupled one dimensional Kitaev chains with a zero and finite superconducting pairing phase difference. Using a Bogoliubov-de Gennes formulation, we analyze the energy spectrum, distribution of Majorana zero modes (MZMs), the quasi-particle dispersion, and the winding number, respectively. For a zero phase difference, the resulting energy spectrum shows topological phases with two, four MZMs, and trivial regions. The phases of gap closure determine the topological phase boundaries. In particular, for the phase difference between $φ=π$, the degeneracy of MZMs is partially lifted, leading to modified topological phases compared to the case $φ=0$. The topological and trivial phase boundaries are further confirmed by evaluating the quasi-particle dispersion and the topological invariant, namely the winding number. We show that the zigzag Kitaev chain contributes independently to the total winding number $ν= 1$ and $2$, giving rise to distinct topological phases that support two and four MZMs. The $ν= 0$ gives rise to a trivial region. The energy spectrum of systems corroborates the analytical phase boundaries and reveals characteristics associated with hybridization, enabling us to obtain the complete phase diagram of the zigzag model. Our results establish the zigzag Kitaev chain as a minimal platform for engineering MZM quantum computations, with potential applications in the study of topological phases and Majorana based qubit physics.
