Abstract

Using dynamical mean-field theory and exact diagonalization we study the phase diagram of the repulsive Haldane-Hubbard model, varying the interaction strength and the sublattice potential difference. In addition to the quantum Hall phase with Chern number C=2 and the band insulator with C=0 present already in the noninteracting model, the system also exhibits a C=0 Mott insulating phase, and a C=1 quantum Hall phase. We explain the latter phase by a spontaneous symmetry breaking where one of the spin components is in the Hall state and the other in the band insulating state.

Topological phase in the extended Haldane-Hubbard model with sublattice-dependent repulsion

Bao-Qing Wang, Can Shao, Takami Tohyama +2 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled extended Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with sublattice-dependent on-site repulsion (${U}_{\text{A/B}}$) using the exact diagonalization (ED) and mean-field (MF) methods. The resulting phase diagram shows that there is a topologically nontrivial phase with the Chern number $C=1$, emerging via the development of the imbalance between ${U}_{\text{A}}$ and ${U}_{\text{B}}$. In this phase, the antiferromagnetic correlations are observed in the ED calculation, in line with the finite antiferromagnetic order obtained by the MF method. The spontaneous symmetry breaking of SU(2) spin rotation in the phase is also identified in the MF level. Distinct from previous studies in which the exotic $C=1$ phase relies on the interplay between sublattice-dependent potentials and electronic interactions, our paper presents an alternative way by solely tuning the on-site interactions.

Phase transitions in the Haldane-Hubbard model with ionic potentials

Hao Yuan, Yangbin Guo, Ruifeng Lu +2 more

By employing the exact-diagonalization method, we revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with staggered sublattice potentials. The phase diagram includes the band insulator, Mott insulator, and two Chern insulator phases with Chern numbers $C=2$ and $C=1$, respectively. The character of transitions between different phases is studied by analyzing the lower-lying energy levels, excitation gaps, structure factors, and fidelity metric. We find that the $C=1$ phase can be continuously deformed into the $C=2$ phase without a gap closure in the periodic boundary condition, while a further analysis on the Berry curvatures indicates that the excitation gap closes at the phase boundary in a twisted boundary condition, accompanied by the discontinuities of structure factors. All the other phase transitions are found to be first-order ones as expected.

Topological phase transitions and topological Mott insulator in Haldane-Hubbard model

Zhao-Long Gu, Kai Li, Jianxin Li

Topological phase transitions and the phase diagram of Haldane-Hubbard model are investigated using the variational cluster approach. With increasing the interaction strength, there are two successive topological phase transitions. The first is characterized by the closing and reopening of the single particle gap with the Chern number changing its sign, while the second is featured by the divergence of the topological Hamiltonian's spectrum with the Chern number changing from a non-zero integer to zero. The second topological phase transition is not accompanied with the single particle gap closing but is associated with the zeros of the single particle Green's function. Between these two topological phase transitions, there exists a non-magnetic topological Mott insulating phase with no gapless single particle edge states which cannot be adiabatically connected to any non-interacting Chern insulator.

Interacting Chern Insulator in Infinite Spatial Dimensions

David Krüger, Michael Potthoff

We study a generic model of a Chern insulator supplemented by a Hubbard interaction in arbitrary even dimension D and demonstrate that the model remains well defined and nontrivial in the D→∞ limit. Dynamical mean-field theory is applicable and predicts a phase diagram with a continuum of topologically different phases separating a correlated Mott insulator from the trivial band insulator. We discuss various features, such as the elusive distinction between insulating and semimetal states, which are unconventional already in the noninteracting case. Topological phases are characterized by a nonquantized Chern density replacing the Chern number as D→∞.

Charge-density-wave and topological transitions in interacting Haldane model

Lei Wang, Hao Shi, Shiwei Zhang +3 more

Haldane model is a noninteracting model for spinless fermions showing nontrivial topological properties. Effect of the electron-electron interaction on the topological phase poses an intriguing question. By means of the Hartree-Fock mean field, the exact diagonalization and the constrained-path Monte Carlo methods we mapped out the phase diagram of the interacting Haldane model. It is found that interaction breaks down the topological phase and drives the system into the charge-density-wave state. Sequence of the two transitions depends on the strength of next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Many-body Chern number and the charge excitation gap are used to characterize the topological transition.

Higher-order topological insulator in a modified Haldane-Hubbard model

Tian-Cheng Yi, Hai‐Qing Lin, Rubem Mondaini

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a modified spinless Haldane-Hubbard model, with broken threefold rotational symmetry, employing exact diagonalization calculations. The interplay of asymmetry, interactions, and topology gives rise to a rich phase diagram. The noninteracting limit of the Hamiltonian exhibits a higher-order topological insulator characterized by the existence of corner modes, in contrast to known chiral edge metallic states of the standard Haldane model. Our investigation demonstrates that these symmetry-protected states are robust to the presence of finite interactions. Furthermore, in certain regimes of parameters, we show that a topological Mott insulator exists in this model, where a nontrivial topological bulk coexists with an interaction-driven charge-density wave, whose emergence is characterized by a ${Z}_{2}$-symmetry breaking within the $3d\text{-Ising}$ universality class.
