Abstract

In a direct detection scheme, we observed 7.8 dB of twin-beam squeezing for multi-mode two-color squeezed vacuum generated via parametric downconversion. Applying post-selection, we conditionally prepared a sub-Poissonian state of light containing 6.3·105 photons per pulse on the average with the Fano factor 0.63±0.01. The scheme can be considered as the heralded preparation of pulses with the mean energy varying between tens and hundreds of fJ and the uncertainty considerably below the shot-noise level. Such pulses can be used in metrology (for instance, for radiometer calibration), as well as for probing multi-mode nonlinear optical effects.

Generation of sub-Poissonian pulses of light

Ruo-Ding Li, Sang-Kyung Choi, Chonghoon Kim +1 more

Sub-Poissonian pulses of light are generated by means of traveling-wave optical parametric deamplification. Upon direct detection the quantum noise on the deamplified pulses is measured to be below the shot-noise limit by as much as 0.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 dB (11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4 %). The parametric-gain dependence of the measured Fano factor---direct-detection noise as a fraction of the shot-noise limit---agrees with the quantum theory of the amplifier when diffraction effects are taken into account.

Low-noise macroscopic twin beams

T. Sh. Iskhakov, Vladyslav C. Usenko, Radim Filip +2 more

Applying a multiphoton-subtraction technique to the two-color macroscopic squeezed vacuum state of light generated via high-gain parametric down-conversion we conditionally prepare a different state of light: bright multimode low-noise twin beams. A lower noise in the sum of the photon numbers opens a possibility to encode information into this variable while keeping the nonclassical character of the state. The obtained results demonstrate up to eightfold suppression of noise in each beam while preserving and even moderately improving the nonclassical photon-number correlations between the beams. The prepared low-noise macroscopic state, containing up to 2000 photons per mode, is not among the Gaussian states achievable through nonlinear optical processes. Apart from that, we suggest a method for measuring quantum efficiency, which is based on the Fano factor measurement. The proposed technique substantially improves the usefulness of twin beams for quantum communication and metrology.

Antibunching-like behavior of mesoscopic light

Alessia Allevi, Maria Bondani

We present the implementation of a compact setup for the generation of sub-Poissonian states of light exhibiting the analogous of antibunching behavior in the so-called mesoscopic intensity domain. In the scheme, the idler arm of a pulsed multi-mode twin-beam state is directly measured by a photon-number-resolving detector, whereas the signal arm is divided at a balanced beam splitter, at whose outputs other two photon-number-resolving detectors measure the number of photons. The three detectors measure synchronous with each laser pulse. Due to the nonclassical correlations in the twin beam, when a given value of photons is measured in the idler arm, the conditional states obtained in post processing at the two beam-splitter outputs are nonclassical, showing lower-than-one values of the Fano factor and of the photon autocorrelation coefficient. The possibility to engineer sub-Poissonian states nearly approaching the Fock state with one photon is also addressed.

Sub-Poissonian-light generation by postselection from twin beams

Jan Peřina, Ondřej Haderka, Václav Michálek

States with sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics obtained by post-selection from twin beams are experimentally generated. States with Fano factors down to 0.62 and mean photon numbers around 12 are reached. Their quasi-distributions of integrated intensities attaining negative values are reconstructed. An intensified CCD camera with a quantum detection efficiency exceeding 20% is utilized both for post-selection and beam characterization. Experimental results are compared with theory that provides the optimum experimental conditions.

Sub-shot-noise photon-number correlation in a mesoscopic twin beam of light

Maria Bondani, Alessia Allevi, Guido Zambra +2 more

We demonstrate sub-shot-noise photon-number correlations in a (temporal) multimode mesoscopic ($\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{3}$ detected photons) twin beam produced by picosecond-pulsed spontaneous nondegenerate parametric down-conversion. We have separately detected the signal and idler distributions of photons collected in twin coherence areas and found that the variance of the photon-count difference goes below the shot-noise limit by $3.25\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$. The number of temporal modes contained in the twin beam, as well as the size of the twin coherence areas, depends on the pump intensity. Our scheme is based on spontaneous down-conversion and thus does not suffer from limitations due to the finite gain of the parametric process. Twin beams are also used to demonstrate the conditional preparation of a nonclassical (sub-Poissonian) state.

Preparation and measurement of tunable high-power sub-Poissonian light using twin beams

Hongxin Zou, Shuqin Zhai, Juan Guo +2 more

Widely frequency tunable bright sub-Poissonian field preparation has been experimentally achieved with quantum-correlated twin beams in the continuously variable regime. The noise of the sub-Poissonian field is reduced to more than 2 dB below the shot-noise level throughout the entire wavelength-tunable range of 7.4 nm. A maximum noise reduction of 45% (2.6 dB) is observed. The statistical distribution of a sub-Poissonian field is also obtained.
