Abstract

We investigate polarization squeezing in squeezed coherent states with varying coherent amplitudes. In contrast to the traditional characterization based on the full Stokes parameters, we experimentally determine the Stokes vector of each excitation subspace separately. Only for states with a fixed photon number do the methods coincide; when the photon number is indefinite, we parse the state in Fock layers, finding that substantially higher squeezing can be observed in some of the single layers. By capitalizing on the properties of the Husimi $Q$ function, we map this notion onto the Poincar\'e space, providing a full account of the measured squeezing.

Quantum Reconstruction of an Intense Polarization Squeezed Optical State

Christoph Marquardt, J. Heersink, Ruifang Dong +5 more

We perform a reconstruction of the polarization sector of the density matrix of an intense polarization squeezed beam starting from a complete set of Stokes measurements. By using an appropriate quasidistribution, we map this onto the Poincaré space, providing a full quantum mechanical characterization of the measured polarization state.

Experimental determination of the degree of polarization of quantum states

Christian Kothe, Lars S. Madsen, Ulrik L. Andersen +1 more

We demonstrate experimental excitation-manifold-resolved polarization characterization of quantum states of light ranging from the few-photon to the many-photon level. In contrast to the traditional characterization of polarization that is based on the Stokes parameters, we experimentally determine the Stokes vector of each excitation manifold separately. Only for states with a given photon number do the methods coincide. For states with an indeterminate photon number, for example Gaussian states, the employed method gives a richer and more accurate description. We apply the method both in theory and in experiment to some common states to demonstrate its advantages.

Stokes-operator-squeezed continuous-variable polarization states

Roman Schnabel, Warwick P. Bowen, Nicolas Treps +3 more

We investigate nonclassical Stokes-operator variances in continuous-wave polarization-squeezed laser light generated from one and two optical parametric amplifiers. A general expression of how Stokes-operator variances decompose into two-mode quadrature operator variances is given. Stokes parameter variance spectra for four different polarization-squeezed states have been measured and compared with a coherent state. Our measurement results are visualized by three-dimensional Stokes-operator noise volumes mapped on the quantum Poincar\'e sphere. We quantitatively compare the channel capacity of the different continuous-variable polarization states for communication protocols. It is shown that squeezed polarization states provide 33% higher channel capacities than the optimum coherent beam protocol.

Polarization squeezing and continuous-variable polarization entanglement

Natalia Korolkova, Gerd Leuchs, R. Loudon +2 more

A concept of polarization entanglement for continuous variables is introduced. For this purpose the Stokes-parameter operators and the associated Poincar\'e sphere, which describe the quantum-optical polarization properties of light, are defined and their basic properties are reviewed. The general features of the Stokes operators are illustrated by evaluation of their means and variances for a range of simple polarization states. Some of the examples show polarization squeezing, in which the variances of one or more Stokes parameters are smaller than the coherent-state value. The main object of the paper is the application of these concepts to bright squeezed light. It is shown that a light beam formed by interference of two orthogonally polarized quadrature-squeezed beams exhibits squeezing in some of the Stokes parameters. Passage of such a primary polarization-squeezed beam through suitable optical components generates a pair of polarization-entangled light beams with the nature of a two-mode squeezed state. Implementation of these schemes using the double-fiber Sagnac interferometer provides an efficient method for the generation of bright nonclassical polarization states. The important advantage of these nonclassical polarization states for quantum communication is the possibility of experimentally determining all of the relevant conjugate variables of both squeezed and entangled fields using only linear optical elements followed by direct detection.

Central-moment description of polarization for quantum states of light

Gunnar G. Bjork, Jonas Söderholm, Yong Soo Kim +6 more

We present a moment expansion for the systematic characterization of the polarization properties of quantum states of light. Specifically, we link the method to the measurements of the Stokes operator in different directions on the Poincar\'e sphere and provide a scheme for polarization tomography without resorting to full-state tomography. We apply these ideas to the experimental first- and second-order polarization characterization of some two-photon quantum states. In addition, we show that there are classes of states whose polarization characteristics are dominated not by their first-order moments (i.e., the Stokes vector) but by higher-order polarization moments.

The Quantum Polarization of the Single-Mode Excited and Photon Depleted Entangled Even and Odd Squeezed States

elnaz dibakar, Amir Karimi, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly

In this paper, using the Stokes parameters in classical optics and generalizing them to the Stokes operators in quantum optics, we study the quantum polarization of the “single-mode excited and photon depleted entangled even and odd squeezed states” for different photon numbers of excitation and depletion separately and at last, we compare our results.
