Maximally coherent states and coherence-preserving operations

Abstract

We investigate maximally coherent states to provide a refinement in quantifying coherence and give a measure-independent definition of the coherence-preserving operations. A maximally coherent state can be considered a resource to create arbitrary quantum states of the same dimension by merely incoherent operations. We propose that only maximally coherent states should achieve the maximal value for a coherence measure and use this condition as an additional criterion for coherence measures to obtain a refinement in quantifying coherence that excludes invalid and inefficient coherence measures. Under this criterion, we then give a measure-independent definition of the coherence-preserving operations, which play a role in quantifying coherence similar to that played by the local unitary operations in the scenario of studying entanglement.

Coherence as maximal imaginarity generated by incoherent operations

Linshuai Zhang, Nan Li

Abstract Since both coherence and imaginarity have proven to be fundamental resources in quantum information processing and their definitions are both relative to a given basis, it is natural to investigate the conversion between them. In this work, we prove that a quantum state can be transformed into a state with nonvanishing imaginarity resource by incoherent operations if and only if it has nonvanishing coherence resource. On the other hand, we demonstrate that a quantum state can be transformed into a state with vanishing coherence resource by orthogonal operations if and only if it has vanishing imaginarity resource. Based on these results, we show that for any imaginarity measure, a corresponding coherence measure can be defined as the maximal amount of imaginarity generated by incoherent operations, and that for any coherence quantifier, a corresponding imaginarity quantifier can be defined as the minimal coherence generated by orthogonal operations.

Maximally coherent states

Zhaofang Bai, Shuanping Du

The relative entropy measure quantifying coherence, a key property of quantum system, is proposed recently. In this note, we firstly investigate structural characterization of maximally coherent states with respect to the relative entropy measure. It is shown that mixed maximally coherent states do not exist and every pure maximally coherent state has the form U|ψihψ|U† , |ψi = √1 d Pd k=1 |ki, U is diagonal unitary. Based on the characterization of pure maximally coherent states, for a bipartite maximally coherent state with dA = dB, we obtain that the super-additivity equality of relative entropy measure holds if and only if the state is a product state of its reduced states. From the viewpoint of resource in quantum information, we find there exists a maximally coherent state with maximal entanglement. Originated from the behaviour of quantum correlation under the influence of quantum operations, we further classify the incoherent operations which send maximally coherent states to themselves.

Quantum coherence between subspaces: State transformation, cohering power, k coherence, and other properties

Azam Mani, F. Rezazadeh, Vahid Karimipour

The concept of block coherence encompasses the case where experimental capabilities are not so delicate to perform arbitrary refined measurements on individual atoms. We develop a framework which facilitates further investigation of this resource theory in several respects. Using this framework, we investigate the problem of state conversion by incoherent operations and show that a majorization condition is the necessary and sufficient condition for state transformation by block-incoherent operations. We also determine the form of the maximally coherent state from which all other states and all unitary gates can be constructed by incoherent operations. Thereafter, we define the concept of block-cohering and block-decohering powers of quantum channels and determine these powers for several types of channels. Finally, we explore the relation between block coherence and a previous extension of coherence, known as $k$ coherence.

Measuring quantum coherence in coherence-vector representation

DING Lei

Recently, how to measure quantum coherence is a hot topic in the quantum resource theory. In 2014, Baumgratz et al. proposed a rigorous framework to quantify coherence. In this framework, a particular basis of the Hilbert space is required to define the coherence measure, and hence, the proposed coherence measure of the same quantum state does not remain the same under the basis transformations. In this paper, a measure of coherence based on the normalized modulus of the coherent vector is proposed in coherent vector representation, where the property of the coherent vector under basis transformation is considered. The measure of coherence proposed here is independent of the choice of the basis. The incoherent states and incoherent operators based on this measure can also be well defined as the classical maximal mixed states and the unitary operators respectively. And three important properties can be obtained, namely, non-negativity, convexity and invariance on the incoherent operators.

Measuring Quantum Coherence with Entanglement

Alexander Streltsov, Uttam Singh, Himadri Shekhar Dhar +2 more

Quantum coherence is an essential ingredient in quantum information processing and plays a central role in emergent fields such as nanoscale thermodynamics and quantum biology. However, our understanding and quantitative characterization of coherence as an operational resource are still very limited. Here we show that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. This finding allows us to define a novel general class of measures of coherence for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, in terms of the maximum bipartite entanglement that can be generated via incoherent operations applied to the system and an incoherent ancilla. The resulting measures are proven to be valid coherence monotones satisfying all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by proving that the fidelity-based geometric measure of coherence is a full convex coherence monotone, and deriving a closed formula for it on arbitrary single-qubit states. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement, two landmark manifestations of quantum theory and both key enablers for quantum technologies.

Quantifying dynamical coherence with coherence measures

Sunho Kim, Chunhe Xiong, Asutosh Kumar +2 more

Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate definition of incoherent operations induced via coherence measures and quantify dynamical coherence based on this definition. Finally, we apply our proposed definition to quantify POVM-based dynamical coherence.
