Abstract

Quantum coherence is an essential ingredient in quantum information processing and plays a central role in emergent fields such as nanoscale thermodynamics and quantum biology. However, our understanding and quantitative characterization of coherence as an operational resource are still very limited. Here we show that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. This finding allows us to define a novel general class of measures of coherence for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, in terms of the maximum bipartite entanglement that can be generated via incoherent operations applied to the system and an incoherent ancilla. The resulting measures are proven to be valid coherence monotones satisfying all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by proving that the fidelity-based geometric measure of coherence is a full convex coherence monotone, and deriving a closed formula for it on arbitrary single-qubit states. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement, two landmark manifestations of quantum theory and both key enablers for quantum technologies.

Measuring coherence with entanglement concurrence

Xianfei Qi, Ting Gao, Fengli Yan

Abstract Quantum coherence is a fundamental manifestation of the quantum superposition principle. Recently, Baumgratz et al (2014 Phys. Rev. Lett . 113 140401) presented a rigorous framework to quantify coherence from the view of theory of physical resource. Here we propose a new valid quantum coherence measure which is a convex roof measure, for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, essentially using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. Rigorous proof shows that the proposed coherence measure, coherence concurrence, fulfills all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence measures. Moreover, strong links between the resource frameworks of coherence concurrence and entanglement concurrence is derived, which shows that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement based on two kinds of concurrence. This new coherence measure, coherence concurrence, may also be beneficial to the study of quantum coherence.

Quantifying coherence in terms of the pure-state coherence

Deng-hui Yu, Li‐qiang Zhang, Chang‐shui Yu

Quantifying quantum coherence is a key task in the resource theory of coherence. Here we establish a good coherence monotone in terms of a state conversion process, which automatically endows the coherence monotone with an operational meaning. We show that any state can be produced from some input pure states via the corresponding incoherent channels. It is found that the coherence of a given state can be well characterized by the least coherence of the input pure states, so a coherence monotone is established by only effectively quantifying the input pure states. In particular, we show that our proposed coherence monotone is the supremum of all the coherence monotones that give the same coherence for any given pure state. We also prove that our coherence monotone is continuous. Considering the convexity, we prove that our proposed coherence measure is a subset of the coherence measure based on the convex roof construction. The similarities and differences between our coherence monotone and coherence cost are studied in detail. As applications, we give a concrete expression of our coherence measure by employing the geometric coherence of a pure state. We also give a thorough analysis of the states of the qubit and finally obtain a series of analytic coherence measures. The numerical examples are also given to show the difference between our coherence monotone and that based on the convex roof construction.

Axiomatic and operational connections between the l1 -norm of coherence and negativity

Huangjun Zhu, Masahito Hayashi, Lin Chen

Quantum coherence plays a central role in various research areas. The ${l}_{1}$-norm of coherence is one of the most important coherence measures that are easily computable, but it is not easy to find a simple interpretation. We show that the ${l}_{1}$-norm of coherence is uniquely characterized by a few simple axioms, which demonstrates in a precise sense that it is the analog of negativity in entanglement theory and sum negativity in the resource theory of magic-state quantum computation. We also provide an operational interpretation of the ${l}_{1}$-norm of coherence as the maximum entanglement, measured by the negativity, produced by incoherent operations acting on the system and an incoherent ancilla. To achieve this goal, we clarify the relation between the ${l}_{1}$-norm of coherence and negativity for all bipartite states, which leads to an interesting generalization of maximally correlated states. Surprisingly, all entangled states thus obtained are distillable. Moreover, their entanglement cost and distillable entanglement can be computed explicitly for a qubit-qudit system.

Operational one-to-one mapping between coherence and entanglement measures

Huangjun Zhu, Zhihao Ma, Zhu Cao +2 more

We establish a general operational one-to-one mapping between coherence measures and entanglement measures: Any entanglement measure of bipartite pure states is the minimum of a suitable coherence measure over product bases. Any coherence measure of pure states, with extension to mixed states by convex roof, is the maximum entanglement generated by incoherent operations acting on the system and an incoherent ancilla. Remarkably, the generalized cnot gate is the universal optimal incoherent operation. In this way, all convex-roof coherence measures, including the coherence of formation, are endowed with (additional) operational interpretations. By virtue of this connection, many results on entanglement can be translated to the coherence setting, and vice versa. As applications, we provide tight observable lower bounds for generalized entanglement concurrence and coherence concurrence, which enable experimentalists to quantify entanglement and coherence of the maximal dimension in real experiments.

Relation between quantum coherence and quantum entanglement in quantum measurements

Ho-Joon Kim, Soojoon Lee

Quantum measurement is a class of quantum channels that sends quantum states to classical states. We set up resource theories of quantum coherence and quantum entanglement for quantum measurements and find relations between them. For this, we conceive a relative entropy-type quantity to account for the quantum resources of quantum measurements. The quantum coherence of a quantum measurement can be converted into the entanglement in a bipartite quantum measurement through coherence nongenerating transformations. Conversely, a quantum entanglement monotone of quantum measurements induces a quantum coherence monotone of quantum measurements. Our results confirm that the understanding on the link between quantum coherence and quantum entanglement is valid even for quantum measurements which do not generate any quantum resource.

Evolution equation for quantum coherence

Zhao, Xinzhi, Shao, Jianwei, Yi Zheng +2 more

Quantum coherence plays an important role in quantum resource theory, which is strongly related with entanglement. Similar to the entanglement evolution equation, we find the coherence evolution equation of quantum states through fully and strictly incoherent operation (FSIO) channels. In order to quantify the full coherence of qudit states, we define G-coherence and convex roof of G-coherence, and prove that the G-coherence is a strong coherence monotone and the convex roof of G-coherence is a coherence measure under FSIO, respectively. Furthermore, we prove a coherence evolution equation for arbitrary $d$-dimensional quantum pure and mixed states under FSIO channels, which generalizes the entanglement evolution equation for bipartite pure states. Our results will play an important role in the simplification of dynamical coherence measure.
