Bulk entanglement spectrum in gapped spin ladders

Abstract

We study the bulk entanglement of a series of gapped ground states of spin ladders, representative of the Haldane phase. These ground states of spin $S/2$ ladders generalize the valence bond solid ground state. In the case of spin 1/2 ladders, we study a generalization of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki and Nersesyan-Tsvelik states and fully characterize the bulk entanglement Hamiltonian. In the case of general spin $S$, we argue that in the Haldane phase the bulk entanglement spectrum of a half-integer ladder is either gapless or possess a degenerate ground state. For ladders with integer valued spin particles, the generic bulk entanglement spectrum should have an entanglement gap. Finally, we give an example of a series of trivial states of higher spin $S>1$ in which the bulk entanglement Hamiltonian is critical, signaling that the relation between topological states and a critical bulk entanglement Hamiltonian is not unique to topological systems.

Quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd-integer spin model as the entanglement Hamiltonian of the integer-spin Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki states

Wen-Jia Rao, Guang-Ming Zhang, Kun Yang

Applying a symmetric bulk bipartition to the one-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence-bond solid (VBS) states for the integer spin-$S$ Haldane gapped phase, we can create an array of fractionalized spin-$S$/2 edge states with the super unit cell $l$ in the reduced bulk system, and the topological properties encoded in the VBS wave functions can be revealed. The entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) with even $l$ corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-$S$/2 model. For the even integer spins, the EH still describes the Haldane gapped phase. For the odd integer spins, however, the EH just corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd integer-spin model with spinon excitations, characterizing the critical point separating the topological Haldane phase from the trivial gapped phase. Our results thus demonstrate that the topological bulk property not only determines its fractionalized edge states but also the quantum criticality associated with the topological phase, where the elementary excitations are precisely those fractionalized edge degrees of freedom confined in the bulk of the topological phase.

Bulk-edge correspondence in the Haldane phase of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 Hamiltonian

Sudipto Singha Roy, Silvia N. Santalla, Javier Rodríguez-Laguna +1 more

Abstract The Haldane phase is the prototype of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of spin chain systems. It can be protected by several symmetries having in common the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum (ES). Here we explore in depth this degeneracy for the spin-1 Affleck–Kennedy–Lieb–Tasaki and bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonians and show the emergence of a bulk-edge correspondence that relates the low energy properties of the entanglement Hamiltonian of a periodic chain and that of the physical Hamiltonian of an open chain. We find that the ES can be described in terms of two spins-1/2 behaving as the effective spins at the end of the open chain. In the case of non-contiguous partitions, we find that the entanglement Hamiltonian is given by the spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, which suggests a relationship between SPT phases and conformal field theory. We finally investigate the string order parameter and the relation with the bulk-edge correspondence.

Tensor network implementation of bulk entanglement spectrum

Timothy H. Hsieh, Liang Fu, Xiao-Liang Qi

Many topologically nontrivial states of matter possess gapless degrees of freedom on the boundary, and when these boundary states delocalize into the bulk, a phase transition occurs, and the system becomes topologically trivial. We show that tensor networks provide a natural framework for analyzing such topological phase transitions in terms of the boundary degrees of freedom which mediate it. To do so, we make use of a correspondence between a topologically nontrivial ground state and its phase transition to a trivial phase established in T. Hsieh and L. Fu (arXiv:1305.1949). This involved computing the bulk entanglement spectrum (BES) of the ground state upon tracing out an extensive subsystem. This work implements BES via tensor network representations of ground states. In this framework, the universality class of the quantum critical entanglement Hamiltonian in $d$ spatial dimensions is either derived analytically or mapped to a classical statistical model in $d+1$ dimensions, which can be studied using Monte Carlo or tensor renormalization-group methods. As an example, we analytically derive the universality classes of topological phase transitions from the spin-1 chain Haldane phase and demonstrate that the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) wave function (and its generalizations) remarkably contains critical six-vertex (and, in general, eight-vertex) models within it.

Entanglement Spectra of Heisenberg Ladders of higher Spin

John Schliemann, Andreas Martin Läuchli

Abstract. We study the entanglement spectrum of Heisenberg spin ladders of arbitrary spin length S in the perturbative regime of strong rung coupling. For isotropic spin coupling the entanglement spectrum is, within first order perturbation theory, always proportional to the energy spectrum of the single chain with a proportionality factor being also independent of S. In particular, although the spin ladder possesses an excitation gap over its ground state for any spin length, the entanglement spectrum is gapless for half-integer S and gapful otherwise. A more complicated situation arises for anisotropic ladders of higher spin S ≥ 1 since here even the unperturbed ground state has a nontrivial entanglement spectrum. Finally we discuss related issues in dimerized spin chains. 1.

Entanglement spectrum and boundary theories with projected entangled-pair states

J. I. Cirac, Didier Poilblanc, Norbert Schuch +1 more

In many physical scenarios, close relations between the bulk properties of quantum systems and theories associated with their boundaries have been observed. In this work, we provide an exact duality mapping between the bulk of a quantum spin system and its boundary using projected entangled-pair states. This duality associates to every region a Hamiltonian on its boundary, in such a way that the entanglement spectrum of the bulk corresponds to the excitation spectrum of the boundary Hamiltonian. We study various specific models: a deformed AKLT model [I. Affleck, T. Kennedy, E. H. Lieb, and H. Tasaki, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 799 (1987)], an Ising-type model [F. Verstraete, M. M. Wolf, D. Perez-Garcia, and J. I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 220601 (2006)], and Kitaev's toric code [A. Kitaev, Ann. Phys. 303, 2 (2003)], both in finite ladders and in infinite square lattices. In the second case, some of those models display quantum phase transitions. We find that a gapped bulk phase with local order corresponds to a boundary Hamiltonian with local interactions, whereas critical behavior in the bulk is reflected on a diverging interaction length of the boundary Hamiltonian. Furthermore, topologically ordered states yield nonlocal Hamiltonians. Because our duality also associates a boundary operator to any operator in the bulk, it in fact provides a full holographic framework for the study of quantum many-body systems via their boundary.

Topological disentangler for the valence-bond-solid chain

Kouichi Okunishi

We discuss the topological disentangler for $S=1$ quantum spin chains in the Haldane phase. We first point out that the Kennedy-Tasaki (KT) nonlocal unitary transformation is the perfect disentangler for the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model. We then demonstrate that the KT transformation can be reconstructed as an assembly of pair disentanglers. Finally, we show that the KT transformation can be regarded as a topological disentangler, which selectively disentangles the twofold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum of the $S=1$ Heisenberg chain.
