All possible permutational symmetries of a quantum system

Abstract

We investigate the intermediate permutational symmetries of a system of qubits that lie in between the perfect symmetric and antisymmetric cases. We prove that, on average, pure states of qubits picked at random with respect to the uniform measure on the unit sphere of the Hilbert space are almost as antisymmetric as they are allowed to be. We then observe that multipartite entanglement, measured by the generalized Meyer-Wallach measure, tends to be larger in subspaces that are more antisymmetric than the complete symmetric one. Eventually, we prove that all states contained in the most antisymmetric subspace are relevant multipartite entangled states in the sense that their 1-qubit reduced states are all maximally mixed.

The maximally entangled symmetric state in terms of the geometric measure

Martin Aulbach, Damian Markham, Mio Murao

The geometric measure of entanglement is investigated for permutation symmetric pure states of multipartite qubit systems, in particular the question of maximum entanglement. This is done with the help of the Majorana representation, which maps an n qubit symmetric state to n points on the unit sphere. It is shown how symmetries of the point distribution can be exploited to simplify the calculation of entanglement and also help find the maximally entangled symmetric state. Using a combination of analytical and numerical results, the most entangled symmetric states for up to 12 qubits are explored and discussed. The optimization problem on the sphere presented here is then compared with two classical optimization problems on the S 2 sphere, namely Tóth's problem and Thomson's problem, and it is observed that, in general, they are different problems.

Exploring pure quantum states with maximally mixed reductions

Ludovic Arnaud, Nicolas J. Cerf

We investigate multipartite entanglement for composite quantum systems in a pure state. Using the generalized Bloch representation for $n$-qubit states, we express the condition that all $k$-qubit reductions of the whole system are maximally mixed, reflecting maximum bipartite entanglement across all $k$ vs $n\ensuremath{-}k$ bipartitions. As a special case, we examine the class of balanced pure states, which are constructed from a subset of the Pauli group ${\mathcal{P}}_{n}$ that is isomorphic to ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{n}$. This makes a connection with the theory of quantum error-correcting codes and provides bounds on the largest allowed $k$ for fixed $n$. In particular, the ratio $k/n$ can be lower and upper bounded in the asymptotic regime, implying that there must exist multipartite entangled states with at least $k=\ensuremath{\lfloor}0.189\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}n\ensuremath{\rfloor}$ when $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. We also analyze symmetric states as another natural class of states with high multipartite entanglement and prove that, surprisingly, they cannot have all maximally mixed $k$-qubit reductions with $k>1$. Thus, measured through bipartite entanglement across all bipartitions, symmetric states cannot exhibit large entanglement. However, we show that the permutation symmetry only constrains some components of the generalized Bloch vector, so that very specific patterns in this vector may be allowed even though $k>1$ is forbidden. This is illustrated numerically for a few symmetric states that maximize geometric entanglement, revealing some interesting structures.

Entanglement of multiparty-stabilizer, symmetric, and antisymmetric states

Masahito Hayashi, Damian Markham, Mio Murao +2 more

We study various distancelike entanglement measures of multipartite states under certain symmetries. Using group averaging techniques we provide conditions under which the relative entropy of entanglement, the geometric measure of entanglement, and the logarithmic robustness are equivalent. We consider important classes of multiparty states, and in particular show that these measures are equivalent for all stabilizer states, symmetric basis and antisymmetric basis states. We rigorously prove a conjecture that the closest product state of permutation symmetric states can always be chosen to be permutation symmetric. This allows us to calculate the explicit values of various entanglement measures for symmetric and antisymmetric basis states, observing that antisymmetric states are generally more entangled. We use these results to obtain a variety of interesting ensembles of quantum states for which the optimal local operations and classical communication discrimination probability may be explicitly determined and achieved. We also discuss applications to the construction of optimal entanglement witnesses.

Chiral Symmetries and Multiparticle Entanglement

Sophia Denker, Satoya Imai, Otfried Gühne

Bosons and fermions are defined by their exchange properties and the underlying symmetries determine the structure of the corresponding state spaces. For two particles there are two possible exchange symmetries, resulting in symmetric or antisymmetric behaviour, but when exploring multiparticle systems also quantum states with chiral symmetries appear. In this work we demonstrate that chiral symmetries lead to extremal forms of quantum entanglement. More precisely, we show that subspaces with this symmetry are highly entangled with respect to the geometric measure of entanglement, leading to observables which can be useful for entanglement characterization. Along the way, we develop a simple method to solve the problem of genuine multiparticle entanglement for unitarily invariant three-particle states and use it to identify genuine multipartite entangled states whose partial transposes with respect to all bipartitions are positive. Finally, we consider generalizations with less symmetry and discuss potential applications.

Certifying separability and entanglement classes of not-completely-permutation-symmetric qudit states

Artur Barasiński, Mateusz Nowotarski

We analyze the entanglement properties for the not-completely-permutation-symmetric states of quantum systems composed of two subsystems with an equal but arbitrary finite local Hilbert space dimension. We investigate both pure and mixed states with such a symmetry obtained by relaxing the symmetry requirement of the axisymmetric states. For such states we discuss the entanglement classification with respect to stochastic local operations and classical communication and establish the entanglement quantitatively by means of concurrence and negativity. In particular, we determine the separability criterion in the frame of various methods, including the $k$-positive map witness, optimal Schmidt-number witnesses, and entanglement measures.

Entanglement and symmetry in permutation-symmetric states

Damian Markham

We investigate the relationship between multipartite entanglement and symmetry, focusing on permutation symmetric states. We give a highly intuitive geometric interpretation to entanglement via the Majorana representation, where these states correspond to points on a unit sphere. We use this to show how various entanglement properties are determined by the symmetry properties of the states. The geometric measure of entanglement is thus phrased entirely as a geometric optimization and a condition for the equivalence of entanglement measures written in terms of point symmetries. Finally, we see that different symmetries of the states correspond to different types of entanglement with respect to interconvertibility under stochastic local operations and classical communication.
