Abstract

We study intersite electron correlations in the half-filled Hubbard model on square lattices with periodic and open boundary conditions by means of a real-space dual fermion approach. By calculating renormalization factors, we clarify that nearest-neighbor intersite correlations already significantly reduce the critical interaction. The Mott transition occurs at U/t ∼ 6.4, where U is the interaction strength and t is the hopping integral. This value is consistent with quantum Monte Carlo results. It shows the importance of short-range intersite correlations, which are taken into account in the framework of the real-space dual fermion approach.

Intersite electron correlations on inhomogeneous lattices: a real-space dual fermion approach

Nayuta Takemori, Akihisa Koga, Hartmut Hafermann

We develop a real-space extension of the dual fermion approach. This method is formulated in terms of real-space Green's functions and local vertex functions, which enables us to discuss local and nonlocal correlations in inhomogeneous systems with an arbitrary geometric structure. We first demonstrate that the approach gives us reasonable results for a homogenous periodic system by taking into account onsite and nearest-neighbor intersite correlations. Moreover, we study the half-filled Hubbard model on the quasiperiodic Penrose lattice and clarify the role of intersite correlations for the Mott transition. The intersite correlations lead to a rich structure in local observables which is inherited from the quasiperiodic structure of the lattice.

Local Electron Correlations in a Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model on the Penrose Lattice

Nayuta Takemori, Akihisa Koga

We study electron correlations in the half-filled Hubbard model on two-dimensional Penrose lattice. Applying the real-space dynamical mean-field theory to large clusters, we discuss how low-temperature properties are affected by the quasiperiodic structure. By calculating the double occupancy and renormalization factor at each site, we clarify the existence of the Mott transition. The spatially-dependent renormalization characteristic of geometrical structure is also addressed.

Mott transition in the asymmetric hubbard model at half-filling: Equation of motion approach

Anh-Tuan Hoang, Thi-Thu-Trang Tran, Duc‐Anh Le

We investigate the Mott metal-insulator transition in the asymmetric Hubbard model, which may describe the ground states of fermionic atoms trapped in optical lattices. We use the dynamical mean-field theory and the equation of motion approach to calculate the density of states at the Fermi level and the double occupation for various values of the on-site interaction U and the hopping asymmetry r . The critical interaction is also obtained as a function of the hopping asymmetry. Our results are in good agreement with the ones obtained by using the dynamical mean field theory with the exact diagonalization and the quantum Monte Carlo techniques.

Two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling

A. Sherman

Abstract We consider the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice at half-filling. The model is investigated using the strong coupling diagram technique. We sum infinite series of ladder diagrams allowing for full-scale charge and spin fluctuations and the actual short-range antiferromagnetic order for nonzero temperatures. In agreement with earlier results, we find the first-order phase transition in the charge subsystem occurring at v = v c ≳ U/4 with v and U the intersite and on-site Coulomb repulsion constants. The transition reveals itself in an abrupt sign change of a sharp maximum in the zero-frequency charge susceptibility at the corner of the Brillouin. States arising at the transition have alternating deviations of electron occupations from the mean value on neighboring sites. Due to fluctuations, these alternating occupation deviations have short-range order. For the considered parameters, such behavior is found for U ≲ 5t with t the hopping constant. For the insulating case U ≳ 6t, in which the transition is not observed, we find a continuous growth of the Mott gap with v. The evolution of the electron density of states with increasing v is also considered.

Variational Monte-Carlo Studies of Hubbard Model. III. Intersite Correlation Effects

Hisatoshi Yokoyama, Hiroyuki Shiba

New variational wave functions are introduced to describe the Hubbard model in strong correlation. Intersite correlation (or Jastrow) factors are taken into account beyond the Gutzwiller wave function (GF). A study is made on the one-dimensional lattice and the two-dimensional square lattice at half-filling as well as less-than-half-filling. Much improvement can be achieved thereby in the description of physical quantities such as the momentum distribution and spin and charge density correlation functions. In addition, the ground state energy is lowered appreciably compared with the GF. In this connection, the Mott-Hubbard-type metal-insulator transition is also re-examined.

Two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: doping, next-nearest neighbor hopping and phase diagrams

A. Sherman

Abstract Using the strong coupling diagram technique, we investigate the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice. This approach allows for charge and spin fluctuations and a short-range antiferromagnetic order at nonzero temperatures. The model features the first-order phase transition to states with alternating site occupations (SAO) at the intersite repulsion v = v c . In this work, we show that doping decreases v c . For a nonzero next-nearest neighbor hopping t ′ , less mobile carriers produce a stronger fall in v c . For half-filling and t ′ = 0 , we consider phase diagrams for a fixed temperature T, on-site U, and intersite repulsions. The diagrams contain regions of SAO, Mott insulator, and several metallic states distinguished by their densities of states. Two of them are characterized by a dip and a peak at the Fermi level. The dip originates from the Slater mechanism for itinerant electrons, while the peak to bound states of electrons with localized magnetic moments. The existence of these two metallic regions in the phase diagram is a manifestation of the Pomeranchuk effect. The boundary between these regions reveals itself as a kink in the curve v c (T) and as a maximum in the T dependence of the double occupancy D. Our calculated D for different values of v, U, and T are in semiquantitative agreement with Monte Carlo results.
