Abstract

There has been a growing interest in realizing topologically nontrivial states of matter in band insulators, where a quantum Hall effect can appear as an intrinsic property of the band structure. While ongoing progress is under way with a number of directions, the possibility of realizing novel interaction-generated topological phases, without the requirement of a nontrivial invariant encoded in single-particle wave function or band structure, can significantly extend the class of topological materials and is thus of great importance. Here, we show an interaction-driven topological phase emerging in an extended Bose-Hubbard model on a kagome lattice, where the noninteracting band structure is topological trivial with zero Berry curvature in the Brillouin zone. By means of an unbiased state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group technique, we identify that the ground state in a broad parameter region is equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state, based on the characterization of universal properties including ground-state degeneracy, edge excitations, and anyonic quasiparticle statistics. Our work paves a way to finding an interaction-induced topological phase at the phase boundary of conventionally ordered solid phases.

Interaction-Driven Spontaneous Quantum Hall Effect on a Kagome Lattice

Wei Kang Zhu, Shou-Shu Gong, Tian-Sheng Zeng +2 more

Topological states of matter have been widely studied as being driven by an external magnetic field, intrinsic spin-orbital coupling, or magnetic doping. Here, we unveil an interaction-driven spontaneous quantum Hall effect (a Chern insulator) emerging in an extended fermion-Hubbard model on a kagome lattice, based on a state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group on cylinder geometry and an exact diagonalization in torus geometry. We first demonstrate that the proposed model exhibits an incompressible liquid phase with doublet degenerate ground states as time-reversal partners. The explicit spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking is determined by emergent uniform circulating loop currents between nearest neighbors. Importantly, the fingerprint topological nature of the ground state is characterized by quantized Hall conductance. Thus, we identify the liquid phase as a quantum Hall phase, which provides a "proof-of-principle" demonstration of the interaction-driven topological phase in a topologically trivial noninteracting band.

Topological Varma Superfluid in Optical Lattices

Marco Fedele Di Liberto, Andreas Hemmerich, C. Morais Smith

Topological states of matter are peculiar quantum phases showing different edge and bulk transport properties connected by the bulk-boundary correspondence. While noninteracting fermionic topological insulators are well established by now and have been classified according to a tenfold scheme, the possible realization of topological states for bosons has not been explored much yet. Furthermore, the role of interactions is far from being understood. Here, we show that a topological state of matter exclusively driven by interactions may occur in the p band of a Lieb optical lattice filled with ultracold bosons. The single-particle spectrum of the system displays a remarkable parabolic band-touching point, with both bands exhibiting non-negative curvature. Although the system is neither topological at the single-particle level nor for the interacting ground state, on-site interactions induce an anomalous Hall effect for the excitations, carrying a nonzero Chern number. Our work introduces an experimentally realistic strategy for the formation of interaction-driven topological states of bosons.

Fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flat bands with nontrivial topology

Jan Carl Budich, Eddy Ardonne

We consider a topologically nontrivial flat-band structure in one spatial dimension in the presence of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor Hubbard interaction. The noninteracting band structure is characterized by a symmetry-protected topologically quantized Berry phase. At certain fractional fillings, a gapped phase with a filling-dependent ground-state degeneracy and fractionally charged quasiparticles emerges. At filling $\frac{1}{3}$, the ground states carry a fractional Berry phase in the momentum basis. These features at first glance suggest a certain analogy to the fractional quantum Hall scenario in two dimensions. We solve the interacting model analytically in the physically relevant limit of a large band gap in the underlying band structure, the analog of a lowest Landau level projection. Our solution affords a simple physical understanding of the properties of the gapped interacting phase. We pinpoint crucial differences to the fractional quantum Hall case by studying the Berry phase and the entanglement entropy associated with the degenerate ground states. In particular, we conclude that the ``fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flat bands'' is not a one-dimensional analog of the two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall states, but rather a charge density wave with a nontrivial Berry phase. Finally, the symmetry-protected nature of the Berry phase of the interacting phase is demonstrated by explicitly constructing a gapped interpolation to a state with a trivial Berry phase.

SU(N) fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng, D. N. Sheng

We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with $\mathrm{SU}(N)$-invariant interactions based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(N+1)$ for bosons [$\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions] in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characterization based on the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix and discuss the close relationship to the fractional quantum Hall physics in topological flat bands with Chern number $N$.

Bosonic fractional Chern insulating state at integer fillings in a multiband system

Wei-Wei Luo, Ai‐Lei He, Yi-Fei Wang +2 more

The integer quantum Hall state occurs when Landau levels are fully occupied by fermions, while the fractional quantum Hall state usually emerges when the Landau level is partially filled by strongly correlated fermions or bosons. Here, we report two fractional Chern insulating states of hard-core bosons in a multiband lattice model hosting topological flat bands with a high Chern number. The previously proposed $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ fractional Chern insulating state inherited from the high Chern number $C=2$ of the lowest topological flat band is revisited by the infinite density matrix renormalization group algorithm. In particular, we numerically identify a bosonic $1/2$-Laughlin-like fractional Chern insulating state at the integer fillings. We show two lower topological flat bands jointly generate an effective $C=1$ Chern band with half filling. Furthermore, we find a strictly particle-hole-like symmetry between the $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $3\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\nu}$ filling in our model. These findings extend our understanding of quantum Hall states and offer a route to realize fractional states in the system with multibands and high Chern numbers.

Quantum anomalous Hall phase stabilized via realistic interactions on a kagome lattice

Yafei Ren, Tian-Sheng Zeng, W. Zhu +1 more

We study the quantum phases of spinless fermions at one-third filling on a kagome lattice featuring a quadratic band touching Fermi point. In the presence of weak first and second nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions (${V}_{1}$ and ${V}_{2}$), we demonstrate an interaction driven quantum anomalous Hall effect by employing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. The time-reversal symmetry is broken spontaneously by forming loop currents that exhibit long-range correlation. Quantized Hall conductance corresponding to a Chern number of $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ is obtained by measuring the pumped charge through inserting flux in a cylinder geometry. We find that the energy gap, which topologically protects the emerging ground states, can be enhanced remarkably by a moderate ${V}_{2}<{V}_{1}$ via calculating the spectrum and charge excitation gaps, which highlights the experimentally feasible scheme of realizing the interaction driven topological phase by spatially decaying interactions on topologically trivial lattice models.
