Abstract

Exact self-consistent soliton dynamics based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) formalism in unconventional Fermi superfluids/superconductors possessing an $\text{SU}(d)$-symmetric two-body interaction is presented. The derivation is based on the ansatz having the similar form as the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation in the inverse scattering theory. Our solutions can be regarded as a multicomponent generalization of the solutions recently derived by Dunne and Thies [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 121602 (2013)]. We also propose superpositions of occupation states, which make it possible to realize various filling rates even in one-flavor systems, and include Dirac and Majorana fermions. The soliton solutions in the $d=2$ systems, which describe the mixture of singlet $s$-wave and triplet $p$-wave superfluids, exhibit a variety of phenomena such as rotating polar phases by soliton spins, SU(2)-DHN breathers, Majorana triplet states, $s\ensuremath{-}p$ mixed dynamics, and so on. These solutions are illustrated by animations, where order parameters are visualized by spherical harmonic functions. The full formulation of the BdG theory is also supported, and the double-counting problem of BdG eigenstates and $N$-flavor generalization are discussed.

Dark–bright solitons in a superfluid Bose–Fermi mixture

Marek Tylutki, Alessio Recati, F. Dalfovo +1 more

The recent experimental realisation of Bose–Fermi superfluid mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases has opened new perspectives in the study of quantum many-body systems. Depending on the values of the scattering lengths and the amount of bosons and fermions, a uniform Bose–Fermi mixture is predicted to exhibit a fully mixed phase, a fully separated phase or, in addition, a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a mixed phase. The occurrence of this intermediate configuration has interesting consequences when the system is nonuniform. In this work we theoretically investigate the case of solitonic solutions of coupled Bogoliubov–de Gennes and Gross–Pitaevskii equations for the fermionic and bosonic components, respectively. We show that, in the partially separated phase, a dark soliton in Fermi superfluid is accompanied by a broad bosonic component in the soliton, forming a dark–bright soliton which keeps full spatial coherence.

Solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas

Mauro Antezza

We will discuss recent results on the theoretical and experimental investigations on solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover. On the theory side, by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter, it has been shown that a dark soliton at unitarity posses a large density contrast and fermionic bound states. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter. By solving the time dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, also the decay and collisions of dark solitons has been investigated. Recently, a cascade of Solitonic Excitations in a Superfluid Fermi gas has been experimentally observed.

Mean-field theory for the dynamics of superfluid fermions in the BCS-BEC crossover

Peng Zou

We use mean-field theory to investigate the dynamics of superfluid fermions. This thesis includes our two works. The first one is to study Josephson oscillations and self-trapping of superfluid fermions in a double-well potential with time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We investigate the behaviour of a two-component Fermi superfluid. We numerically solve the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and characterize the regimes of Josephson oscillations and self-trapping for different potential barriers and initial conditions. In the weak link limit the results agree with a two-mode model where the relative population and the phase difference between the two wells obey coupled nonlinear Josephson equations. A more complex dynamics is predicted for large amplitude oscillations and large tunneling. The second one is to calculate the dynamic structure factor of unitary fermions. We have studied the dynamic structure factor of unitary fermions both at zero and finite temperature using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory and also Superfluid Local Density Approximation. We have derived the expression of the linear response function and the dynamic structure factor in the random phase approximation. At zero temperature, the SLDA+RPA formalism indeed provides a better accuracy at low momentum transfer and also its static structure factor is closer to quantum Monte Carlo value than that in BdG+RPA; however SLDA seems to give worse results for the molecular excitations at large momentum transfer. We have discussed the role of temperature and the comparison between SLDA and BdG, as well as with experimental data. The analysis is still at a preliminary level, but it suggests that mean-field theories can indeed be used to extract quantitative information about the order parameter and the excitations of the system by two-photon Bragg scattering experiments.

Self-Consistent Multiple Complex-Kink Solutions in Bogoliubov–de Gennes and Chiral Gross-Neveu Systems

Daisuke A. Takahashi, Muneto Nitta

We exhaust all exact self-consistent solutions of complex-valued fermionic condensates in the (1+1)-dimensional Bogoliubov-de Gennes and chiral Gross-Neveu systems under uniform boundary conditions. We obtain n complex (twisted) kinks, or gray solitons, with 2n parameters corresponding to their positions and phase shifts. Each soliton can be placed at an arbitrary position while the self-consistency requires its phase shift to be quantized by π/N for N flavors.

Engineering frequency-dependent superfluidity in Bose-Fermi mixtures

Maksims Arzamasovs, Bo Liu

Unconventional superconductivity and superfluidity are among the most exciting and fascinating quantum phenomena in condensed-matter physics. Usually such states are characterized by nontrivial spin or spatial symmetry of the pairing order parameter, such as ``spin triplet'' or ``$p$ wave.'' However, besides spin and spatial dependence the order parameter may have unconventional frequency dependence which is also permitted by Fermi-Dirac statistics. Odd-frequency fermionic pairing is an exciting paradigm when discussing exotic superfluidity or superconductivity and is yet to be realized in experiments. In this paper we propose a symmetry-based method of controlling frequency dependence of the pairing order parameter via manipulating the inversion symmetry of the system. First, a toy model is introduced to illustrate that frequency dependence of the order parameter can be achieved through our proposed approach. Second, by taking advantage of recent rapid developments in producing spin-orbit-coupled dispersions in ultracold gases, we propose a Bose-Fermi mixture to realize such frequency-dependent superfluid. The key idea is introducing the frequency-dependent attraction between fermions mediated by Bogoliubov phonons with asymmetric dispersion. Our proposal should pave an alternative way for exploring frequency-dependent superfluids with cold atoms.

Finite-temperature effective field theory for dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

Serghei N. Klimin, Jacques Tempere, J. T. Devreese

We use a finite-temperature effective field theory recently developed for superfluid Fermi gases to investigate the properties of dark solitons in these superfluids. Our approach provides an analytic solution for the dip in the order parameter and the phase profile across the soliton, which can be compared with results obtained in the framework of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. We present results in the whole range of the BCS-BEC crossover, for arbitrary temperatures and taking into account Gaussian fluctuations about the saddle point. The obtained analytic solutions yield an exact energy-momentum relation for a dark soliton showing that the soliton in a Fermi gas behaves like a classical particle even at nonzero temperatures. The spatial profile of the pair field and for the parameters of state for the soliton are analytically studied.
