Abstract

The transition from weakly damped coherent motion to localization in the context of the spin-boson model has been the subject of numerous studies with distinct behavior depending on the form of the phonon-bath spectral density $J\left(\ensuremath{\omega}\right)\ensuremath{\propto}{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{s}$. Sub-Ohmic ($s<1$) and Ohmic ($s=1$) spectral densities show a clear localization transition at zero temperature and zero bias, while for super-Ohmic ($s>1$) spectral densities this transition disappears. In this paper, we consider the influence of the phonon-bath spectral density on the nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum dot with electron-phonon interactions described by the extended Holstein model. Using the reduced density matrix formalism combined with the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree approach, we investigate the dynamic response, the time scales for relaxation, as well as the existence of multiple long-lived solutions as the system-bath coupling changes from the sub- to the super-Ohmic cases. Bistability is shown to diminish for increasing powers of $s$ similar to the spin-boson case. However, the physical mechanism and the dependence on the model parameters such as the typical bath frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$ and the polaron shift $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ are rather distinct.

Quantum dissipative dynamics of a bistable system in the sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic regime

Luca Magazzù, Angelo C. M. Carollo, Bernardo Spagnolo +1 more

Abstract We investigate the quantum dynamics of a multilevel bistable system coupled to a bosonic heat bath beyond the perturbative regime. We consider different spectral densities of the bath, in the transition from sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic dissipation, and different cutoff frequencies. The study is carried out by using the real-time path integral approach of the Feynman–Vernon influence functional. We find that, in the crossover dynamical regime characterized by damped intrawell oscillations and incoherent tunneling, the short time behavior and the time scales of the relaxation starting from a nonequilibrium initial condition depend nontrivially on the spectral properties of the heat bath.

Transient dynamical phase diagram of the spin-boson model at finite temperature

Olga Goulko, Hsing-Ta Chen, Moshe Goldstein +1 more

We present numerically exact inchworm quantum Monte Carlo results for the real-time dynamics of the spin polarization in the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model at finite temperature. We focus in particular on the localization and coherence behavior of the model, extending our previous study at low temperature [Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 056502 (2025)]. As the temperature increases, the system becomes less localized and less coherent. The loss of coherence, which is controlled by two independent mechanisms -- a smooth damping-driven crossover and a sharp frequency-driven transition -- exhibits a nontrivial temperature dependence. While both types of coherence loss occur at lower coupling in the high temperature regime, the frequency exhibits a sharper drop at high temperatures and this drop is observed for all values of the sub-Ohmic exponent, in contrast to the zero-temperature case. We discuss the full temperature-dependent dynamical phase diagram of the system and the interplay between coherence and localization across a wide range of physical parameters.

Dynamics of the spin-boson model: The effect of bath initial conditions

Lipeng Chen, Yiying Yan, Maxim F. Gelin +1 more

The dynamics of the (sub-)Ohmic spin-boson model under various bath initial conditions is investigated by employing the Dirac–Frenkel time-dependent variational approach with the multiple Davydov D1 Ansatz in the interaction picture. The validity of our approach is carefully checked by comparing the results with those of the hierarchy equations of motion method. By analyzing the features of nonequilibrium dynamics, we identify the phase diagrams for different bath initial conditions. We find that for the spectral exponent s < sc, there exists a transition from coherent to quasicoherent dynamics with increasing coupling strengths. For sc < s ≤ 1, the coherent to incoherent crossover occurs at a certain coupling strength and the quasicoherent dynamics emerges at much larger couplings. The initial preparation of the bath has a considerable influence on the dynamics.

Dynamical Crossover of the Quantum Fisher Information in the Spin-Boson Model

D. Parlato, G. Di Bello, F. Pavan +2 more

We investigate the dynamical quantum Fisher information of a two-level system coupled to a bosonic environment, focusing on the estimation of the qubit gap. We combine analytical calculations with numerically controlled matrix-product-state simulations. In the exactly solvable pure-dephasing Ohmic regime at zero temperature, the long-time quantum Fisher information displays a coupling-dependent algebraic behavior, leading to a dynamical crossover: it grows without bound at weak coupling, approaches a finite asymptotic value at the crossover coupling, and vanishes at strong coupling. At finite temperature, thermal fluctuations suppress the long-time growth and generate a finite-time maximum, whose dependence on the dephasing coupling retains a clear signa- ture of the zero-temperature crossover. We show that this crossover is absent at zero temperature in non-Ohmic baths: the long-time quantum Fisher information vanishes in the sub-Ohmic and diverges in the super-Ohmic regimes. At non-zero temperature instead, the crossover appears for a super-Ohmic quadratic bath and the crossover coupling becomes temperature-dependent. Moreover, in the zero-temperature Ohmic regime, we introduce an additional amplitude-damping system-bath coupling that induces energy relaxation. This relaxation channel replaces the unbounded long-time growth with a finite asymptotic quantum Fisher information associated with the reduced interacting ground state, while a signature of the pure-dephasing crossover persists in the early-time dynamics. These results establish a direct connection between the low-frequency structure of the bath and the asymptotic metrological behavior of dynamical gap sensing, and show how thermal fluctuations and energy relaxation regularize the ideal pure-dephasing dynamical crossover of the quantum Fisher information.

Dephasing and pseudocoherent quantum dynamics in super-Ohmic environments

Ph. Nacke, Florian Otterpohl, Michael Thorwart +1 more

Dephasing in quantum systems is typically the result of their interaction with environmental degrees of freedom. We investigate within a spin-boson model the influence of a super-Ohmic environment on the dynamics of a quantum two-state system. A super-Ohmic environment thereby models typical bulk phonons which are a common disturbance for solid state quantum systems as, for example, nitrogen-vacancy centers. By applying the numerically exact quasiadiabatic path-integral approach we show that for strong system-bath coupling, pseudocoherent dynamics emerges, i.e., oscillatory dynamics at short times due to slaving of the quantum system to the bath dynamics. We extend the phase diagram known for sub-Ohmic and Ohmic environments into the super-Ohmic regime and observe a pronounced nonmonotonous behavior. Super-Ohmic purely dephasing fluctuations strongly suppress the amplitude of coherent dynamics at very short times with no subsequent further decay at later times. Nevertheless, they render the dynamics overdamped. The corresponding phase separation line shows also a nonmonotonous behavior, very similar to the pseudocoherent dynamics.

Zero-temperature localization in a sub-Ohmic spin-boson model investigated by an extended hierarchy equation of motion

Chenru Duan, Zhoufei Tang, Jianshu Cao +1 more

With a decomposition scheme for the bath correlation function, the hierarchy equation of motion (HEOM) is extended to the zero-temperature sub-Ohmic spin-boson model, providing a numerically accurate prediction of quantum dynamics. As a dynamic approach, the extended HEOM determines the delocalized-localized (DL) phase transition from the extracted rate kernel and the coherent-incoherent dynamic transition from the short-time oscillation. As the bosonic bath approaches from the strong to weak sub-Ohmic regimes, a crossover behavior is identified for the critical Kondo parameter of the DL transition, accompanied by the transition from the coherent to incoherent dynamics in the localization.
