Correlation functions in conformal invariant stochastic processes

Abstract

We consider the problem of correlation functions in the stationary states of one-dimensional stochastic models having conformal invariance. If one considers the space dependence of the correlators, the novel aspect is that although one considers systems with periodic boundary conditions, the observables are described by boundary operators. From our experience with equilibrium problems one would have expected bulk operators. Boundary operators have correlators having critical exponents being half of those of bulk operators. If one studies the space-time dependence of the two-point function, one has to consider one boundary and one bulk operators. The Raise and Peel model has conformal invariance as can be shown in the spin 1/2 basis of the Hamiltonian which gives the time evolution of the system. This is an XXZ quantum chain with twisted boundary condition and local interactions. This Hamiltonian is integrable and the spectrum is known in the finite-size scaling limit. In the stochastic base in which the process is defined, the Hamiltonian is not local anymore. The mapping into an SOS model, helps to define new local operators. As a byproduct some new properties of the SOS model are conjectured. The predictions of conformal invariance are discussed in the new framework and compared with Monte Carlo simulations.

Critical Q=1 Potts Model and Temperley-Lieb Stochastic Processes

Paul A. Pearce, V. Rittenberg, Jan de Gier

We consider the groundstate wave function and spectra of the $L$-site XXZ $U_q[s\ell(2)]$ invariant quantum spin chain with $q=\exp(πi/3)$. This chain is related to the critical Q=1 Potts model and exhibits $c=0$ conformal invariance. We show that the problem is related to Hamiltonians describing one-dimensional stochastic processes defined on a Temperley-Lieb algebra. The bra groundstate wave function is trivial and the ket groundstate wave function gives the probabilty distribution of the stationary state. The stochastic processes can be understood as interface RSOS growth models with nonlocal rates. Allowing defects which can hop on the interface one obtains stochastic models having the same stationary state and spectra (but not degeracies) as the XXZ chain.

Off-diagonal density profiles and conformal invariance

Loïc Turban, Ferenc Iglói

Off-diagonal profiles of local densities (e.g. order parameter or energy density) are calculated at the bulk critical point, by conformal methods, on a strip with transverse coordinate v, for different types of boundary conditions (free, fixed and mixed). Such profiles, which are defined by the non-vanishing matrix element of the appropriate operator between the ground state and the corresponding lowest excited state of the strip Hamiltonian, enter into the expression of two-point correlation functions on a strip. They are of interest in the finite-size scaling study of bulk and surface critical behaviour since they allow the elimination of regular contributions. The conformal profiles, which are obtained through a conformal transformation of the correlation functions from the half-plane to the strip, are in agreement with the results of a direct calculation, for the energy density of the two-dimensional Ising model.

Conformal invariance in conditioned stochastic particle systems

Gunter Markus Schutz

Abstract We consider space-time correlations in generic one-dimensional stochastic interacting particle systems with short-range interactions that undergo a fluctuation with an atypically activity of particle jumps or reactions or spin flips. We briefly review the approach in the framework of the quantum Hamiltonian formalism and present examples where the dynamics during such large fluctuations is governed not by the typical stationary dynamics, but by ballistic universality classes with dynamical exponent z = 1 that are described unitary conformally invariant field theories with central charge c . For reaction–diffusion and spin flip dynamics we identify critical points (a) in the Ising universality class with c = 1 / 2 , and (b) in the universality class of the three-states Potts model with c = 4 / 5 . For the Ising universality class we obtain a universal scaling form for the generating function of cumulants of the jump activity. For repulsive driven diffusive systems with one conservation law the regime of an atypically high current or hopping activity is generically conformally invariant with central charge c = 1 .

2002 Spectrum of a duality–twisted Ising quantum chain

Uwe Grimm

Abstract. The Ising quantum chain with a peculiar twisted boundary condition is considered. This boundary condition, first introduced in the framework of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg quantum chain, is related to the duality transformation, which becomes a symmetry of the model at the critical point. Thus, at the critical point, the Ising quantum chain with the duality-twisted boundary is translationally invariant, similar as in the case of the usual periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete energy spectrum of the Ising quantum chain is calculated analytically for finite systems, and the conformal properties of the scaling limit are investigated. This provides an explicit example of a conformal twisted boundary condition and a corresponding generalised twisted partition function. Conformal invariance and universality in finite-size scaling

John Cardy

The universal relation between critical exponents and the amplitude of the correlation length divergence as a function of finite size at the critical point of two-dimensional systems is shown to be a consequence of conformal invariance. Both periodic and free boundary conditions are considered.

Stochastic processes and conformal invariance

We discuss a one-dimensional model of a fluctuating interface with a dynamic exponent z=1. The events that occur are adsorption, which is local, and desorption which is nonlocal and may take place over regions of the order of the system size. In the thermodynamic limit, the time dependence of the system is given by characters of the c=0 logarithmic conformal field theory of percolation. This implies in a rigorous way, a connection between logarithmic conformal field theory and stochastic processes. The finite-size scaling behavior of the average height, interface width and other observables are obtained. The avalanches produced during desorption are analyzed and we show that the probability distribution of the avalanche sizes obeys finite-size scaling with new critical exponents.
