Abstract

We study topological properties of phase transition points of one-dimensional topological quantum phase transitions by assigning winding numbers defined on closed circles around the gap closing points in the parameter space of momentum and a transition driving parameter, which overcomes the problem of ill definition of winding numbers on the transition points. By applying our scheme to the extended Kitaev model and to the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we demonstrate that the topological phase transition can be well characterized by winding numbers of transition points, which reflect the change of the winding number of topologically different phases across the phase transition points.

Characterization of topological phase transitions via topological properties of transition points

Linhu Li, Shu Chen

We study topological properties of phase transition points of topological quantum phase transitions by assigning a topological invariant defined on a closed circle or surface surrounding the phase transition point in the parameter space of momentum and transition driving parameter. By applying our scheme to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and Haldane model, we demonstrate that the topological phase transition can be well characterized by the defined topological invariant of the transition point, which reflects the change of topological invariants of topologically different phases across the phase transition point.

Topological Characterization of Extended Quantum Ising Models

Gang Zhang, Z. Song

We show that a class of exactly solvable quantum Ising models, including the transverse-field Ising model and anisotropic XY model, can be characterized as the loops in a two-dimensional auxiliary space. The transverse-field Ising model corresponds to a circle and the XY model corresponds to an ellipse, while other models yield cardioid, limacon, hypocycloid, and Lissajous curves etc. It is shown that the variation of the ground state energy density, which is a function of the loop, experiences a nonanalytical point when the winding number of the corresponding loop changes. The winding number can serve as a topological quantum number of the quantum phases in the extended quantum Ising model, which sheds some light upon the relation between quantum phase transition and the geometrical order parameter characterizing the phase diagram.

Topological quantum phase transitions and criticality in a longer-range Kitaev chain

Y R Kartik, Ranjith Kumar R, S Rahul +2 more

In an attempt to theoretically investigate the quantum phase transition and criticality in topological models, we study a Kitaev chain with longer-range couplings (finite number of neighbors) as well as truly long-range couplings (infinite number of neighbors). We carry out an extensive topological characterization of the momentum space to explore the possibility of obtaining higher order winding numbers and analyze the nature of their stability in the model. The occurrences of phase transitions from even-to-even and odd-to-odd winding numbers are observed with decreasing longer-rangeness in the system. We derive topological quantum critical lines and study them to understand the behavior of criticality. A suppression of higher order winding numbers is observed with decreasing longer-rangeness in the model. We show that the mechanism behind such phenomena is due to the superposition and vanishing of the topological quantum critical lines associated with the higher winding number. Through the study of the Berry connection, we show the possible different behaviors of critical lines when they undergo superposition along with the corresponding critical exponents. We analyze the behavior of the long-range models through the momentum space characterization. We also provide the exact solution for the problem and discuss the experimental aspects of the work.

Topological characterizations of an extended Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model

Dizhou Xie, Wei Gou, Teng Xiao +2 more

Abstract The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model perhaps is the easiest and the most basic model for topological excitations. Many variations and extensions of the SSH model have been proposed and explored to better understand both fundamental and novel aspects of topological physics. The SSH4 model has been proposed theoretically as an extended SSH model with higher dimension (the internal dimension changes from two to four). It has been proposed that the winding number in this system can be determined through a higher-dimensional extension of the mean chiral displacement measurement, however, this has not yet been verified in experiment. Here, we report the realization of this model with ultracold atoms in a momentum lattice. We verify the winding number through measurement of the mean chiral displacement in a system with higher internal dimension, we map out the topological phase transition in this system, and we confirm the topological edge state by observation of the quench dynamics when atoms are initially prepared at the system boundary.

Quantum Phase Transition and Entanglement in Topological Quantum Wires

Jaeyoon Cho, Kun Woo Kim

We investigate the quantum phase transition of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by inspecting the two-site entanglements in the ground state. It is shown that the topological phase transition of the SSH model is signified by a nonanalyticity of local entanglement, which becomes discontinuous for finite even system sizes, and that this nonanalyticity has a topological origin. Such a peculiar singularity has a universal nature in one-dimensional topological phase transitions of noninteracting fermions. We make this clearer by pointing out that an analogous quantity in the Kitaev chain exhibiting the identical nonanalyticity is the local electron density. As a byproduct, we show that there exists a different type of phase transition, whereby the pattern of the two-site entanglements undergoes a sudden change. This transition is characterised solely by quantum information theory and does not accompany the closure of the spectral gap. We analyse the scaling behaviours of the entanglement in the vicinities of the transition points.

Topological Theory of Classical and Quantum Phase Transition

Tieyan Si

We presented the topological current of Ehrenfest definition of phase transition. It is shown that different topology of the configuration space corresponds to different phase transition, it is marked by the Euler number of the interaction potential. The two phases separated by the coexistence curve is assigned with different winding numbers of opposite sign. We also found an universal equation of coexistence curve, from which one can arrive the phase diagram of any order classical and quantum phase transition. The topological quantum phase transition theory is established, and is applied to the Bose-Hubbard model, the phase diagram of the first order quantum PT is in agreement with recent progress.
