Abstract

We investigate the phase diagram and the spin-orbital entanglement of a one-dimensional $\mathrm{SU}(2)\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\text{XXZ}$ model with SU(2) spin exchange and anisotropic $\text{XXZ}$ orbital exchange interactions and negative exchange coupling constant. As a unique feature, the spin-orbital entanglement entropy in the entangled ground states increases here linearly with system size. In the case of Ising orbital interactions, we identify an emergent phase with long-range spin-singlet dimer correlations triggered by a quadrupling of correlations in the orbital sector. The peculiar translational-invariant spin-singlet dimer phase has finite von Neumann entanglement entropy and survives when orbital quantum fluctuations are included. It even persists in the isotropic $\mathrm{SU}(2)\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\text{SU}$(2) limit. Surprisingly, for finite transverse orbital coupling, the long-range spin-singlet correlations also coexist in the antiferromagnetic spin and alternating orbital phase making this phase also unconventional. Moreover, we also find a complementary orbital singlet phase that exists in the isotropic case but does not extend to the Ising limit. The nature of entanglement appears essentially different from that found in the frequently discussed model with positive coupling. Furthermore, we investigate the collective spin and orbital wave excitations of the disentangled ferromagnetic-spin/ferro-orbital ground state and explore the continuum of spin-orbital excitations. Interestingly, one finds among the latter excitations two modes of exciton bound states. Their spin-orbital correlations differ from the remaining continuum states and exhibit logarithmic scaling of the von Neumann entropy with increasing system size. We demonstrate that spin-orbital excitons can be experimentally explored using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, where the strongly entangled exciton states can be easily distinguished from the spin-orbital continuum.

von Neumann entropy spectra and entangled excitations in spin-orbital models

Wen‐Long You, Andrzej M. Oleś, Peter Horsch

We consider the low-energy excitations of one-dimensional spin-orbital models which consist of spin waves, orbital waves, and joint spin-orbital excitations. Among the latter we identify strongly entangled spin-orbital bound states and spin-orbital quasiparticle states which appear as peaks in the von Neumann entropy spectral function introduced in this work. We present the scaling of the von Neumann entropy with system size and find a qualitatively different behavior for the bound state and the quasiparticle---the strong entanglement of these states is manifested by a universal logarithmic scaling of the von Neumann entropy with system size, while the entropy saturates for other spin-orbital excitations. We suggest that spin-orbital entanglement can be experimentally explored by the measurement of the dynamical spin-orbital correlations using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, where strong spin-orbit coupling associated with the core hole plays a role.

Entanglement driven phase transitions in spin–orbital models

Wen-Long You, Andrzej M. Oleś, Peter Horsch

To demonstrate the role played by the von Neumann entropy (vNE) spectra in quantum phase transitions we investigate the one-dimensional anisotropic SU(2) spin–orbital model with negative exchange parameter. In the case of classical Ising orbital interactions we discover an unexpected novel phase with Majumdar–Ghosh-like spin–singlet dimer correlations triggered by spin–orbital entanglement (SOE) and having orbital correlations, while all the other phases are disentangled. For anisotropic XXZ orbital interactions both SOE and spin–dimer correlations extend to the antiferro-spin/alternating-orbital phase. This quantum phase provides a unique example of two coupled order parameters which change the character of the phase transition from first-order to continuous. Hereby we have established the vNE spectral function as a valuable tool to identify the change of ground state degeneracies and of the SOE of elementary excitations in quantum phase transitions.

Deformation of SU(4) singlet spin-orbital state due to Hund’s rule coupling

Hiroaki Onishi

We investigate the ground-state property and the excitation gap of a one-dimensional spin-orbital model with isotropic spin and anisotropic orbital exchange interactions, which represents the strong-coupling limit of a two-orbital Hubbard model including the Hund's rule coupling $(J)$ at quarter filling, by using a density-matrix renormalization group method. At $J=0$, spin and orbital correlations coincide with each other with a peak at $q=\ensuremath{\pi}∕2$, corresponding to the SU(4) singlet state. On the other hand, spin and orbital states change in a different way due to the Hund's rule coupling. With increasing $J$, the peak position of orbital correlation changes to $q=\ensuremath{\pi}$, while that of spin correlation remains at $q=\ensuremath{\pi}∕2$. In addition, orbital dimer correlation becomes robust in comparison with spin dimer correlation, suggesting that quantum orbital fluctuation is enhanced by the Hund's rule coupling. Accordingly, a relatively large orbital gap opens in comparison with a spin gap, and the system is described by an effective spin system on the background of the orbital dimer state.

Quantum phase transitions in a strongly entangled spin-orbital chain: A field-theoretical approach

A. A. Nersesyan, Gia-Wei Chern, Natalia Borisovna Perkins

Motivated by recent experiments on quasi-one-dimensional vanadium oxides, we study quantum phase transitions in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model describing a Haldane chain and a classical Ising chain locally coupled by the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. By employing a field-theoretical approach, we analyze the topology of the ground-state phase diagram and identify the nature of the phase transitions. In the strong coupling limit, a long-range N\'eel order of entangled spin and orbital angular momenta appears in the ground state. We find that, depending on the relative scales of the spin and orbital gaps, the linear chain follows two distinct routes to reach the N\'eel state. First, when the orbital exchange is the dominating energy scale, a two-stage ordering takes place in which the magnetic transition is followed by melting of the orbital Ising order; both transitions belong to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. In the opposite limit, the low-energy orbital modes undergo a continuous reordering transition which represents a line of Gaussian critical points. On this line the orbital degrees of freedom form a Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid. We argue that the emergence of the Gaussian criticality results from merging of the two Ising transitions in the strong hybridization region where the characteristic spin and orbital energy scales become comparable. Finally, we show that, due to the spin-orbit coupling, an external magnetic field acting on the spins can induce an orbital Ising transition.

Entanglement and correlations in a one-dimensional quantum spin- 12 chain with anisotropic power-law long-range interactions

Jie Ren, Wen‐Long You, Xiaoqun Wang

The correlations, entanglement entropy, and fidelity susceptibility are calculated for a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with anisotropic power-law long-range interactions by employing the density matrix renormalization group method. In particular, this long-range interaction is assigned to ferromagnetic for transversal components, while it can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic for the longitudinal spin component. Two ground-state phase diagrams are established versus the anisotropy of the interactions, which not only changes the phase boundaries of the counterparts with short-range interactions, but also leads to the emergence of exotic phases. We found that the long-range interactions of the $z$ component results in a Wigner crystal phase, whereas the transversal one may break a continuous symmetry, resulting in a continuous symmetry-breaking phase.

Entanglement-entropy analysis of critical and topological quantum phases in a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder

Azadeh Ghannadan, Hana Vargová, Jozef Genzor +2 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder in the transverse magnetic field with an anisotropic inter-rung exchange coupling $α$. This bond-anisotropic parameter continuously interpolates among the Ising-like limit $α=0$, the isotropic point $α=1$, and the XY-dominated regime $α\gg 1$. Using density-matrix renormalization group calculations within a matrix-product-state framework, we analyze bipartite entanglement, magnetization, and spin correlations to characterize the emergent quantum phases. We identify six distinct ground-state phases, including rung-singlet, Haldane-like, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, canted Ising-ordered, XY-polarized, and ordered ferromagnetic states. While magnetization and local correlations provide a first insight into phase classifications, the finite-size scaling of the entanglement measures offers a more sensitive and unified diagnostics of both gapped and gapless regimes. In the gapless regime, we extract the central charge $c \simeq 1$, confirming Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior, while at the transition between the canted Ising and ferromagnetic phases, we observe $c \simeq 1/2$, consistent with the Ising universality. Finally, we find that both the Haldane-like behavior and the extended critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid regime are strongly confined to the vicinity of the isotropic point $α= 1$.
