Abstract

We present a heralded photon source based only on linear optics and weak coherent states. By time-tuning a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer fed with frequency-displaced coherent states, the output photons can be synchronously heralded following sub-Poisson statistics, which is indicated by the second-order correlation function $\mathrm{[}{g}^{2}\left(0\right)=0.556]$. The absence of phase-matching restrictions makes the source widely tunable, with 100-nm spectral tunability on the telecom bands. The technique presents yield comparable to state-of-the-art spontaneous parametric down-conversion-based sources, with high coherence and fiber-optic quantum communication compatibility.

Fiber-based narrow-band single-photon source with high heralding efficiency

Lei Yang, Xiaoxin Ma, Cui Liang +2 more

According to the correlated photon pairs produced by spontaneous four-wave mixing in dispersion-shifted fiber, we present a telecom-band single-photon source by using mode-locked laser. Single-photons with a -3 dB bandwidth of 1.1 nm are heralded with more than 50% probability. The measured second-order correlation g(2)(0) is equal to 0.090.01. Our source is well suit for quantum communication systems.

Wavelength-Tunable and High-Heralding-Efficiency Quantum Photon Source in Birefringent Phase-Matched Lithium Niobate Waveguide

Tao, Zhu-Qi, Xiao‐Xu Fang, Lu He

Lithium niobate~(LN) is a birefringent material, where the strong birefringence thermo-optic effect is promising for the generation of quantum photon source with widely tunable wavelength. Here, we demonstrate birefringent phase-matching in a 20-mm-long waveguide fabricated on 5~$μ$m-thick x-cut lithium niobate on insulator. The waveguide is deviated from the optical axis of LN by an angle of 53.5$^\circ$, enabling the phase matching between telecom and visible wavelengths. The phase-matching wavelength of this device can be thermally tuned with rate of 0.617~nm/K. We demonstrate the type-1 spontaneous parametric down-conversion to generate photon pairs with brightness of 2.2~MHz/mW and coincidence-to-accidental ratio up to $2.8\times10^5$. Furthermore, the heralded single photon is obtained from the photon pair with efficiency of 13.8\% and count rate up to 37.8~kHz.

Here, we demonstrate birefringent phase matching in a 20-mm-long waveguide fabricated on a 5- μ m-thick x -cut lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). Furthermore, the heralded single photon is obtained from the photon pair with an efficiency of 13.8% and a count rate of up to 37.8 kHz.

Heralded single-photon source utilizing highly nondegenerate, spectrally factorable spontaneous parametric downconversion

Fumihiro Kaneda, Karina Garay-Palmett, Alfred B. U’Ren +1 more

We report on the generation of an indistinguishable heralded single-photon state, using highly nondegenerate spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). Spectrally factorable photon pairs can be generated by incorporating a broadband pump pulse and a group-velocity matching (GVM) condition in a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. The heralding photon is in the near IR, close to the peak detection efficiency of off-the-shelf Si single-photon detectors; meanwhile, the heralded photon is in the telecom L-band where fiber losses are at a minimum. We observe spectral factorability of the SPDC source and consequently high purity (90%) of the produced heralded single photons by several different techniques. Because this source can also realize a high heralding efficiency (> 90%), it would be suitable for time-multiplexing techniques, enabling a pseudo-deterministic single-photon source, a critical resource for optical quantum information and communication technology.

A pump enhanced source of telecom-band correlated photon pairs

Peter James Thomas, Malcolm H. Dunn, David J. M. Stothard +2 more

Correlated photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric downconversion have become a key resource for research into enhanced optical measurement and quantum optical information processing. A pump-enhanced χ(2) source of correlated photons in the telecom band is presented. An investigation of the pair photon coincidence detection rate measured from the source, together with the evaluation of system losses, indicated a single spatial fibre-optic mode pair production rate of 6.12 × 104 s−1 mW−1 pump power, an order of magnitude greater than was measured without enhancement. A Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment confirmed that the enhancement did not have any adverse effect on the spatial and frequency indistinguishability of the emitted pairs. The source comprises a symmetric and linear enhancement cavity for the pump, making it particularly suitable for generating polarisation entangled photon pairs without the need for compensating crystals 1 Thomas, PJ, Chunnilall, CJ, Stothard, DJM, Walsh, DA and Dunn, MH. 2010. Phase-tunable inverse Hong-Ou-Mandel interference: Principles and demonstration in a photon pair source

Csaba Tamás Holló, Tamás Sarkadi, Attila Barócsi +2 more

A method is presented for the separation of polarization-entangled, frequency-degenerate photon pairs based on inverse Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Adjusting the phase between photon states is achieved by exploiting the wavelength dispersion of optical glass, for which process a complete mathematical description is given. To experimentally demonstrate the phenomenon, a custom photon pair source has been built using spontaneous parametric downconversion of type-0 phase matching and a Sagnac interferometer. The effect of phase tuning was characterized by the modulation of coincidence probability. The visibility of quantum interference was found to be 0.820 and 0.720 for photons being in purely horizontal or vertical polarization state. In case of polarization entanglement, the measured state fidelity with respect to the $|{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Phi}}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ Bell state was 0.914.
