Abstract

Single-quantum level operations are important tools to manipulate a quantum state. Annihilation or creation of single particles translates a quantum state to another by adding or subtracting a particle, depending on how many are already in the given state. The operations are probabilistic and the success rate has yet been low in their experimental realization. Here we experimentally demonstrate (near) deterministic addition and subtraction of a bosonic particle, in particular a phonon of ionic motion in a harmonic potential. We realize the operations by coupling phonons to an auxiliary two-level system and applying transitionless adiabatic passage. We show handy repetition of the operations on various initial states and demonstrate by the reconstruction of the density matrices that the operations preserve coherences. We observe the transformation of a classical state to a highly non-classical one and a Gaussian state to a non-Gaussian one by applying a sequence of operations deterministically.

Unconditional Accumulation of Nonclassicality in a Single‐Atom Mechanical Oscillator

Lukáš Podhora, Tuan Pham Minh, Adam Lešundák +6 more

Abstract The robust experimental accumulation of nonclassicality of motion of a single trapped ion is reported. The nonclassicality stems from deterministic incoherent modulation of thermal phonon number distribution implemented by a laser excitation of nonlinear coupling between the ion's internal—electronic levels and external—motional states. It is demonstrated that the repetitive application of this nonlinear process monotonically accumulates the observable state nonclassicality. The output states converge to a phonon number distribution with high overlap with a particular Fock state and visible quantum non‐Gaussian aspects including corresponding negative Wigner function. The resulting oscillator states prove deterministic transition in the hierarchy of quantum non‐Gaussianity up to four phonons. This transition is very robust against experimental imperfections and produces increasing entanglement potential.

Sculpting bosonic states with arithmetic subtractions

Lin Htoo Zaw, Zakarya Lasmar, Chi Huan Nguyen +4 more

Abstract Continuous-variable (CV) encoding allows information to be processed compactly and efficiently on quantum processors. Recently developed techniques such as controlled beam-splitter operations and the near deterministic phonon subtractions make trapped ion systems attractive for exploring CV quantum computing. Here we propose a probabilistic scheme based on the boson sculpting technique for generating multipartite highly entangled states of motional modes of trapped ion systems. We also investigate the effects of decoherence on the fidelity of the generated state by performing numerical simulations with realistic noise parameters. Our work is a step towards generating multipartite CV entanglement.

MANIPULATION OF THE QUANTUM MOTION OF TRAPPED ATOMIC IONS VIA STIMULATED RAMAN TRANSITIONS

Kenneth Wright

Trapped ions have been a staple resource of quantum simulation for the past decade. By taking advantage of the spin motion coupling provided by the Coulomb interaction, trapped ions have been used to study quantum phase transitions of highly frustrated spins, many body localization, as well as discrete time crystals. However, all of these simulations involve decoupling the ion motion from spin at the end of the experimental procedure. Here we present progress towards driving bosonic interference between occupied phonon modes. This thesis details a tool box for manipulating the motional states of a chain of trapped ions. Taking advantage of spin motion interaction of tightly trapped chains of 171Yb+ ions with two photon Raman transition, we show how to prepare a specic number state of a given normal mode of motion. This is achieved without traditional individual addressing but instead by using composite pulse sequences and ion transport. This involves a stage of quantum state distillation, and we also show preservation of phonon and spin coherence after this distillation step. This Fock state preparation sets the stage to observe bosonic interference of different phonon modes. We use stimulated Raman transitions to create a parametric drive; this drive will couple different normal modes of motion. To observe the bosonic nature of the phonons, we preform a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference experiment on two singly occupied normal modes. We use the same spin motion coupling to read out the spin states of individual ions as a witness for this interaction. We also describe a process to use stimulated rapid adiabatic passage (STIRAP) to read out normal mode occupation. The toolbox presented here will be useful for future experiments towards boson sampling using trapped ions.

Scheme for Proving the Bosonic Commutation Relation Using Single-Photon Interference

M. S. Kim, Hyunseok Jeong, Alessandro Zavatta +2 more

We propose an experiment to directly prove the commutation relation between bosonic annihilation and creation operators, based on the recent experimental success in single-photon subtraction and addition. We devise a single-photon interferometer to realize coherent superpositions of two sequences of photon addition and subtraction. Depending on the interference outcome, the commutation relation is directly proven or a highly nonclassical state is produced. Experimental imperfections are assessed to show that the realization of the scheme is highly feasible.

Quantum Parametric Oscillator with Trapped Ions

Shiqian Ding, Gleb Maslennikov, Roland Hablützel +2 more

A strong nonlinear coupling between harmonic oscillators is highly desirable for quantum information processing and quantum simulation, but is difficult to achieve in many physical systems. Here, we exploit the Coulomb interaction between two trapped ions to achieve strong nonlinear coupling between normal modes of motion at the single-phonon level. We experimentally demonstrate phonon up- and down-conversion and apply this coupling to directly measure the parity and Wigner functions of the ions' motional states. Our results represent the fully quantum operation of a degenerate parametric oscillator and hold promise for quantum computation schemes that involve continuous variables.

Single-ion phonon laser in the quantum regime

Dong Yuanzhang, He Siwen, Deng Zhijiao +3 more

The quantum phonon laser state is a vibrational state generated by phonon coherent amplification based on quantum mechanics. Its core is coherent excitation and manipulation of phonon quantum states by controlling phonon dynamics. This technology breaks classical limits of traditional phonon lasers, offering new methods for quantum information. Previous research on quantum phonon lasers focused on quantum van der Pol oscillators. As typical nonlinear quantum systems, they show significant value in trapped-ion systems. These breakthroughs extend nonlinear dynamics into the quantum domain and provide platforms for exploring quantum nonlinear phenomena. Although realized in two-ion systems, practical applications remain challenging. This paper explores how a single trapped ion generates quantum phonon laser states using a three-level model. By solving the quantum master equation numerically, steady-state characteristics are analyzed, focusing on quantum statistics including the Wigner function and second-order correlation function. An experimental scheme is proposed based on a single trapped 40Ca+ ion, using bichromatic blue-sideband and red-sideband lasers to generate quantum phonon laser states. By introducing the characteristic function of motional states, precise quantum state tomography is achieved. Additionally, a two-level model discusses the phonon laser threshold effect. However, the three-level model shows significantly different thresholds and more accurately describes the quantum phonon laser's physical mechanisms.
