Abstract

The Bose-stimulated self-organization of a quasi-two-dimensional nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate in an in-plane potential is proposed. We obtained the solution of the nonlinear, driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an external asymmetric parabolic potential within the method of the spectral expansion. We found that, in sharp contrast to previous observations, the condensate can spontaneously acquire a solitonlike shape for spatially homogeneous pumping. This condensate soliton performs oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap and, also, can spontaneously rotate. Stability of the condensate soliton in the spatially asymmetric trap is analyzed. In addition to the nonlinear dynamics of nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms, our findings can be applied to the condensates of quantum well excitons and cavity polaritons in semiconductor heterostructure, and to the condensates of photons.

Localization and self-trapping in driven-dissipative polariton condensates

Frank Bello, P. R. Eastham

We study driven-dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-mode Josephson system, such as a double-well potential, with asymmetrical pumping. We investigate nonlinear effects on the condensate populations and mode transitions. The generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations are modified in order to treat pumping of only a single mode. We characterize the steady-state solutions in such a system as well as criteria for potential trapping of a condensate mode. There are many possible steady states, with different density and/or phase profiles. Transitions between different condensate modes can be induced by varying the parameters of the junction or the initial conditions, or by applying external fields.

Dynamics of imbalanced quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate in external potentials

K. K. Ismailov, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, F. Kh. Abdullaev +1 more

In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a new type of symbiotic solitons resembling dark-bright solitons. A variational approach has been developed which allows us to find the stationary state of the system and frequency of small amplitude dynamics near the equilibrium. It is shown that the strength of inter-component coupling can be retrieved from the frequency of the localized state's vibrations.

Gray solitons and phonons in repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates confined in one-dimensional nonharmonic traps

Abdelaziz Radouani

We numerically solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the evolution of an elongated dilute repulsive atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional (1D) nonharmonic potential. We find that the gray solitons, which are propagative solutions of the 1D GPE, traveling at an initial constant velocity, smaller than the speed of sound, oscillate through the trapped condensate, but that this oscillatory motion is accompanied by a spontaneous emission of small sound waves. By examining the gray soliton trajectory and its velocity in the trapped repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate, we show that the oscillatory motion is uniform and nondissipative except at the returning points of the gray soliton, where it exhibits a slight radiative acceleration (antidamping). Our numerical results are in good agreement with previous theoretical predictions, but show the need to take radiation emission into account.

Dynamic evolution of vortex solitons for coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic potential trap

Ying Wang, Yang Yang, Siqing He +1 more

We studied the evolution of vortex solitons in two-component coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a harmonic potential. Using a two-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation model and a variational method, we theoretically derived the vortex soliton solution. Under an appropriate parametric setting, the derived vortex soliton radius was found to oscillate periodically. The derived quasi-stable states with typical nonlinear features are pictorially demonstrated and can be used to guide relevant experimental observations of vortex soliton phenomena in coupled ultracold atomic systems.

Dissipation-Managed Bright Soliton in a 1D Bose–Einstein Condensate in an Optical-Lattice Potential

Zheng Zhou, Yu Hui-You, Ao Sheng-Mei +1 more

We study the formation of a dynamically-stabilized dissipation-managed bright soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate by including an imaginary three-body recombination loss term and an imaginary linear feeding one in the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, trapped in a shallow optical-lattice potential. Based on the direct approach of perturbation theory for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we demonstrate that the height (as well as width) of bright soliton may have little change through selecting experimental parameters.

Dynamic chaos and stability of a weakly open Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap

Xiaobing Luo, Wenhua Hai

We investigate the dynamics of a weakly open Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction in a magneto-optical double-well trap. A set of time-dependent ordinary differential equations describing the complex dynamics are derived by using a two-mode approximation. The stability of the stationary solution is analyzed and some stability regions on the parameter space are displayed. In the symmetric well case, the numerical calculations reveal that by adjusting the feeding from the nonequilibrium thermal cloud or the two-body dissipation rate, the system could transit among the periodic motions, chaotic self-trapping states of the Lorenz model, and the steady states with the zero relative atomic population or with the macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST). In the asymmetric well case, we find the periodic orbit being a stable two-sided limited cycle with MQST. The results are in good agreement with that of the direct numerical simulations to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
