Abstract

We investigate the quantification of coherence in the infinite-dimensional systems, and especially, we focus on the infinite-dimensional bosonic systems in the Fock space. We find that given the average energy constraints, the relative entropy of coherence serves as a well-defined quantification of coherence in the infinite-dimensional systems, however, the ${l}_{1}$ norm of coherence fails. Via using the relative entropy of coherence as the quantification of coherence, we generalize the case to multimode Fock spaces, and some special examples are considered. It is shown that with a finite average particle number, increasing the number of modes of light can enhance the relative entropy of coherence. With the mean energy constraint, our results can also be extended to other infinite-dimensional systems.

On the quantification of entanglement in infinite-dimensional quantum systems

Jens Eisert, Christoph Simon, Martin Bodo Plenio

We investigate entanglement measures in the infinite-dimensional regime. First, we discuss the peculiarities that may occur if the Hilbert space of a bi-partite system is infinite dimensional, most notably the fact that the set of states with infinite entropy of entanglement is trace-norm dense in state space, implying that in any neighbourhood of every product state lies an arbitrarily strongly entangled state. The starting point for a clarification of this counterintuitive property is the observation that if one imposes the natural and physically reasonable constraint that the mean energy is bounded from above, then the entropy of entanglement becomes a trace-norm continuous functional. The considerations will then be extended to the asymptotic limit, and we will prove some asymptotic continuity properties. We proceed by investigating the entanglement of formation and the relative entropy of entanglement in the infinite-dimensional setting. Finally, we show that the set of entangled states is still trace-norm dense in state space, even under the constraint of a finite mean energy.

Complementarity relations for quantum coherence

Shuming Cheng, Michael J. W. Hall

Various measures have been suggested recently for quantifying the coherence of a quantum state with respect to a given basis. We first use two of these, the ${l}_{1}$-norm and relative entropy measures, to investigate tradeoffs between the coherences of mutually unbiased bases. Results include relations between coherence, uncertainty, and purity; tight general bounds restricting the coherences of mutually unbiased bases; and an exact complementarity relation for qubit coherences. We further define the average coherence of a quantum state. For the ${l}_{1}$-norm measure this is related to a natural ``coherence radius'' for the state and leads to a conjecture for an ${l}_{2}$-norm measure of coherence. For relative entropy the average coherence is determined by the difference between the von Neumann entropy and the quantum subentropy of the state and leads to upper bounds for the latter quantity. Finally, we point out that the relative entropy of coherence is a special case of G-asymmetry, which immediately yields several operational interpretations in contexts as diverse as frame alignment, quantum communication, and metrology, and suggests generalizing the property of quantum coherence to arbitrary groups of physical transformations.

Approximation of multipartite quantum states and the relative entropy of entanglement

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Special approximation technique for analysis of different characteristics of states of multipartite infinite-dimensional quantum systems is proposed and applied to study of the relative entropy of entanglement and its regularisation. We prove several results about analytical properties of the multipartite relative entropy of entanglement and its regularization (the lower semicontinuity on wide class of states, the uniform continuity under the energy constraints, etc.). We establish a finite-dimensional approximation property for the relative entropy of entanglement and its regularization that allows to generalize to the infinite-dimensional case the results proved in the finite-dimensional settings.

Randomness quantification of coherent detection

Hongyi Zhou, Pei Zeng, Mohsen Razavi +1 more

Continuous-variable quantum cryptographic systems, including random number generation and key distribution, are often based on coherent detection. The essence of the security analysis lies in the randomness quantification. Previous analyses employ a semiquantum picture, where the strong local oscillator limit is assumed. Here we investigate the randomness of homodyne detection in a full quantum scenario by accounting for the shot noise in the local oscillator, which requires us to develop randomness measures in the infinite-dimensional scenario. Similar to the finite-dimensional case, our introduced measure of randomness corresponds to the relative entropy of coherence defined for an infinite-dimensional system. Our results are applicable to general coherent detection systems, in which the local oscillator is inevitably of finite power. As an application example, we employ the analysis method to a practical vacuum-fluctuation quantum random number generator and explore the limits of generation rate given a continuous-wave laser.

Infinite-Dimensional Quantum Entropy: The Unified Entropy Case

Roman Gielerak, Joanna Wiśniewska, Marek Sawerwain

Infinite-dimensional systems play an important role in the continuous-variable quantum computation model, which can compete with a more standard approach based on qubit and quantum circuit computation models. But, in many cases, the value of entropy unfortunately cannot be easily computed for states originating from an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Therefore, in this article, the unified quantum entropy (which extends the standard von Neumann entropy) notion is extended to the case of infinite-dimensional systems by using the Fredholm determinant theory. Some of the known (in the finite-dimensional case) basic properties of the introduced unified entropies were extended to this case study. Certain numerical examples for computing the proposed finite- and infinite-dimensional entropies are outlined as well, which allowed us to calculate the entropy values for infinite Hilbert spaces.

Measures of correlations in infinite-dimensional quantum systems

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Several important measures of quantum correlations of a state of a finite-dimensional composite system are defined as linear combinations of marginal entropies of this state. This paper is devoted to the infinite-dimensional generalizations of such quantities and to the analysis of their properties. We introduce the notion of faithful extension of a linear combination of marginal entropies and consider several concrete examples starting with the quantum mutual information and the quantum conditional entropy. Then we show that the conditional mutual information can be uniquely defined as a lower semicontinuous function on the set of all states of a tripartite infinite-dimensional system possessing all the basic properties valid in finite dimensions. Infinite-dimensional generalizations of some other measures of quantum correlations in multipartite quantum systems are also considered. It is shown that almost all of these generalized measures are globally lower semicontinuous and possess local continuity properties which essentially simplify their use in analysis of quantum systems. In the second part of the paper we consider applications of the general results of its first part, in particular, to the theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels and their capacities. We also show the existence of the Fawzi-Renner recovery channel reproducing marginal states for all tripartite states (including states with infinite marginal entropies) starting with the corresponding finite-dimensional result.
