Nonequilibrium quasi-long-range order of a driven random-field O(N) model

Abstract

We investigate three-dimensional O(N) spin models driven with a uniform velocity over a random field. Within a spin-wave approximation, it is shown that in the strong driving regime the model with N=2 exhibits a quasi-long-range order in which the spatial correlation function decays in a power-law form. Furthermore, for the cases that N=2 and 3, we numerically demonstrate a nonequilibrium phase transition between the quasi-long-range order phase and the disordered phase, which turns out to resemble the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the two-dimensional pure XY model in equilibrium.

Unified Picture of Ferromagnetism, Quasi-Long-Range Order, and Criticality in Random-Field Models

Matthieu Tissier, Gilles Tarjus

By applying the recently developed nonperturbative functional renormalization group (FRG) approach, we study the interplay between ferromagnetism, quasi-long-range order (QLRO), and criticality in the d-dimensional random-field O(N) model in the whole (N, d) diagram. Even though the "dimensional reduction" property breaks down below some critical line, the topology of the phase diagram is found similar to that of the pure O(N) model, with, however, no equivalent of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. In addition, we obtain that QLRO, namely, a topologically ordered "Bragg glass" phase, is absent in the 3-dimensional random-field XY model. The nonperturbative results are supplemented by a perturbative FRG analysis to two loops around d = 4.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional XY model with random phases: A Monte Carlo study

J. Maucourt, Daniel R. Grempel

We study the two-dimensional $\mathrm{XY}$ model with quenched random phases by Monte Carlo simulation and finite-size scaling analysis. We determine the phase diagram of the model and study its critical behavior as a function of disorder and temperature. If the strength of the randomness is less than a critical value, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c},$ the system has a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transition from the paramagnetic phase to a state with quasi-long-range order. Our data suggest that the latter exists down to $T=0$ in contradiction with theories that predict the appearance of a low-temperature reentrant phase. At the critical disorder ${T}_{\mathrm{KT}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ and for $\ensuremath{\sigma}>{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}$ there is no quasiordered phase. At zero temperature there is a phase transition between two different glassy states at ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}.$ The functional dependence of the correlation length on $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ suggests that this transition corresponds to the disorder-driven unbinding of vortex pairs.

Random-field and random-anisotropy O(N) spin systems with a free surface

Andrei A. Fedorenko

We study the surface scaling behavior of a semi-infinite d-dimensional O(N) spin system in the presence of a quenched random field and random anisotropy disorders. It is known that above the lower critical dimension d(LC) = 4 the infinite models undergo a paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition for N > N(c) (N(c) = 2.835 for the random field and N(c) =9.441 for random anisotropy). For N < N(c) and d < d(LC) there exists a quasi-long-range-order phase with a zero order parameter and a power-law decay of spin correlations. Using a functional renormalization group, we derive the surface scaling laws that describe the ordinary surface transition for d > d(LC) and the long-range behavior of spin correlations near the surface in the quasi-long-range-order phase for d < d(LC). The corresponding surface exponents are calculated to one-loop order. The obtained results can be applied to the surface scaling of periodic elastic systems in disordered media, amorphous magnets, and (3)He-A in aerogel.

Dynamical properties of random-field Ising model

Suman Sinha, Pradipta Kumar Mandal

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are performed on a two-dimensional random field Ising model. The purpose of the present work is to study the disorder-induced changes in the properties of disordered spin systems. The time evolution of the domain growth, the order parameter, and the spin-spin correlation functions are studied in the nonequilibrium regime. The dynamical evolution of the order parameter and the domain growth shows a power law scaling with disorder-dependent exponents. It is observed that for weak random fields, the two-dimensional random field Ising model possesses long-range order. Except for weak disorder, exchange interaction never wins over pinning interaction to establish long-range order in the system.

Logarithmic Quasi-Long-Range Order and Novel Continuous Phase Transition in the Two-Dimensional $XY$ Model with $1/r^4$ Interaction

Xianzhi Pan, Zhijie Fan, Youjin Deng

We investigate the phase diagram and critical properties of the two-dimensional classical XY model with interactions decaying as $1/r^{2+σ}$. At the marginal case $σ=2$, we show that the low-temperature phase is characterized by logarithmic quasi-long-range order (log-QLRO), where spin correlations decay as a power of the logarithm of distance, $C(r)\sim(\ln r)^{-η_\ell}$ with $η_\ell\propto T$, and that the transition into this phase is a continuous transition beyond both the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism. Our analysis combines a near-exact Gaussian spin-wave theory, an adiabatic renormalization-group analysis, and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the $1/r^4$ interaction logarithmically modifies the spin-wave stiffness kernel as $γ(k)\simeqκk^2\ln(1/k)$, which suppresses vortex proliferation and gives rise to a nonuniversal correlation-length exponent $ν\propto1/\sqrt{2πκ}$. Crucially, our simulations reveal that the short-range algebraic QLRO phase is unstable against a weak long-range perturbation for $σ\le2$. These results establish $σ=2$ as the crossover boundary between the long-range and short-range universality classes and provide a critical evaluation of recent theoretical proposals.

Quasi-long-range order in the 2D XY model with random phase shifts

Vincenzo Alba, Andrea Pelissetto, Ettore Vicari

We study the square-lattice XY model in the presence of random phase shifts. We consider two different disorder distributions with zero average shift and investigate the low-temperature quasi-long-range order phase which occurs for sufficiently low disorder. By means of Monte Carlo simulations we determine several universal quantities which are then compared with the analytic predictions of the random spin-wave theory. We observe a very good agreement which indicates that the universal long-distance behavior in the whole low-disorder low-temperature phase is fully described by the random spin-wave theory.
