Abstract

We study the square-lattice XY model in the presence of random phase shifts. We consider two different disorder distributions with zero average shift and investigate the low-temperature quasi-long-range order phase which occurs for sufficiently low disorder. By means of Monte Carlo simulations we determine several universal quantities which are then compared with the analytic predictions of the random spin-wave theory. We observe a very good agreement which indicates that the universal long-distance behavior in the whole low-disorder low-temperature phase is fully described by the random spin-wave theory.

Magnetic and glassy transitions in the square-latticeXYmodel with random phase shifts

Vincenzo Alba, Andrea Pelissetto, Ettore Vicari

We investigate the magnetic and glassy transitions of the square-lattice XY model in the presence of random phase shifts. We consider two different random-shift distributions: the Gaussian distribution and a slightly different distribution (cosine distribution) which allows the exact determination of the Nishimori line where magnetic and overlap correlation functions are equal. We perform Monte Carlo simulations for several values of the temperature and of the variance of the disorder distribution, in the paramagnetic phase close to the magnetic and glassy transition lines. We find that, along the transition line separating the paramagnetic and the quasi-long-range order phases, magnetic correlation functions show a universal Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior as in the pure XY model, while overlap correlations show a disorder-dependent critical behavior. This behavior is observed up to a multicritical point which, in the cosine model, lies on the Nishimori line. Finally, for large values of the disorder variance, we observe a universal zero-temperature glassy critical transition, which is in the same universality class as that occurring in the gauge-glass model.

Absence of Reentrance in the Two-Dimensional XY-Model with Positional Disorder

Mai Suan Li

We show, that the 2D XY-model with random phase shifts exhibits for low temperature and small disorder a phase with quasi-long-range order, and that the transition to the disordered phase is not reentrant. These results are obtained by heuristic arguments, an analytical renormalization group (RG) calculation, and a numerical Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group treatment.

Quasi-long-range ordering in a finite-size 2D classical Heisenberg model

O. Kapikranian, Bertrand Berche, Yurij V. Holovatch

We analyse the low-temperature behaviour of the classical isotropic ferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a two-dimensional square lattice of finite size. Presence of a residual magnetization in a finite-size system enables us to use a low-temperature approximation, which is however more restricting than the usual spin-wave approximation known to give reliable results for the XY model at low temperatures T . For the system considered, we find that the spin–spin correlation function decays as 1/ r η( T ) for large separations r bringing about the presence of a quasi-long-range ordering. We give analytic estimates for the exponent η( T ) in different regimes and support our findings by Monte Carlo simulations of the model on lattices of different sizes at different temperatures.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional XY model with random phases: A Monte Carlo study

J. Maucourt, Daniel R. Grempel

We study the two-dimensional $\mathrm{XY}$ model with quenched random phases by Monte Carlo simulation and finite-size scaling analysis. We determine the phase diagram of the model and study its critical behavior as a function of disorder and temperature. If the strength of the randomness is less than a critical value, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c},$ the system has a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transition from the paramagnetic phase to a state with quasi-long-range order. Our data suggest that the latter exists down to $T=0$ in contradiction with theories that predict the appearance of a low-temperature reentrant phase. At the critical disorder ${T}_{\mathrm{KT}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ and for $\ensuremath{\sigma}>{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}$ there is no quasiordered phase. At zero temperature there is a phase transition between two different glassy states at ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{c}.$ The functional dependence of the correlation length on $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ suggests that this transition corresponds to the disorder-driven unbinding of vortex pairs.

Absence of Reentrance in the Two-Dimensional XY-Model with Random Phase Shift

Thomas Nattermann, Stefan Scheidl, S. E. Korshunov +1 more

We show, that the 2D XY-model with random phase shifts exhibits for low temperature and small disorder a phase with quasi-long-range order, and that the transition to the disordered phase is {\it not} reentrant. These results are obtained by heuristic arguments, an analytical renormalization group calculation, and a numerical Migdal-Kadanoff renormalization group treatment. Previous predictions of reentrance are found to fail due to an overestimation of the vortex pair density as a consequence of independent dipole approximations. At positions, where vortex pairs are energetically favored by disorder, their statistics becomes effectively fermionic. The results may have implications for a large number of related models.

Universal magnetic fluctuations in the two-dimensional XY model

P. Archambault, S. T. Bramwell, Jean-Yves Fortin +3 more

We discuss the probability distribution function for the magnetic order parameter M, in the low temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model. In this phase the system is critical over the whole range of temperature. The thermally averaged value of the order parameter 〈M〉, which is zero in the thermodynamic limit, has abnormally large finite size corrections. An exact result, within a spin wave calculation gives 〈M〉=(1/2N)T/8πJ, where J is the magnetic exchange constant and N the number of spins. We show, using Monte Carlo simulation, that the distribution function, Q(y−〈y〉), y=T−1LT/4πJM, is an asymmetric universal function. Using a diagramatic technique, we show that the asymmetry comes from three-spin and higher correlations. If only two-spin correlations are considered, the distribution is Gaussian. However, as there are contributions from two-spin terms separated by all distances, the distribution remains broad and is consistent with a divergent susceptibility.
