Abstract

We solve the Bogoliubov equations for an inhomogeneous condensate in the vicinity of a linear turning point. A stable integration scheme is developed using a transformation into an adiabatic basis. We identify boundary modes trapped in a potential whose shape is similar to a Hartree–Fock mean-field treatment. These modes are non-resonantly excited when bulk modes reflect at the turning point and contribute significantly to the spectrum of local density fluctuations.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential in the vicinity of a critical point

Barbara Oleś, Paweł Zin, Jan Chwedeńczuk +2 more

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate with an attractive particle interaction in a symmetric double well potential. It is known that in the mean field description a symmetric solution for the condensate wavefunction becomes unstable when the interactions are stronger than some critical value. We analyze the system around the critical point applying the number conserving Bogoliubov theory and exact diagonalization of the two mode hamiltonian. It allows for estimation of the density fluctuations in the system. Fluctuations of the order parameter, which is defined in the mean field description, turn out to be maximal at the critical point.

The Bogoliubov excitation spectrum in anharmonic traps

Erez Gershnabel, Nadav Y. Katz, Eitan E. Rowen +1 more

We study the linearized Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of infinitely long anharmonically trapped Bose–Einstein condensates, with the aim of overcoming inhomogeneous broadening. We compare the Bogoliubov spectrum of a harmonic trap with that of a theoretical flat-bottom trap and find a significant reduction in the inhomogeneous broadening of the lineshape of Bogoliubov excitations. While the Bragg excitation spectrum for a condensate in a harmonic trap supports a number of radial modes, the flat trap is found to significantly support just one mode. We also study the excitation spectrum of realistic anharmonic traps with potentials of finite power dependence on the radial coordinate. We observe a correlation between the number of radial modes and the number of bound states in the effective potential of the quasi-particles. Finally, we compare a full numerical Gross–Pitaevskii simulation of a finite-length condensate to our model of infinite, linearized Gross–Pitaevskii excitations. We conclude that our model captures the essential physics.

Mean-density Bogoliubov description of inhomogeneous Bose-condensed gases

John A. Vaccaro

A mean-density description of spatially-inhomogeneous Bose-condensed gases based on Bogoliubov's method is introduced. The description assumes only a large mean atomic density and so remains valid when the mean field collapses due to phase diffusion. A spread in the number of particles in the condensate is shown to lead to an anomalous coupling between the condensate and excited modes. This coupling is due to the dependence of the condensate spatial wavefunction on particle number and it could, in principle, be used for reducing particle fluctuations in the condensate.

Bogoliubov modes of a dipolar condensate in a cylindrical trap

Shai Ronen, Daniele C. E. Bortolotti, John L. Bohn

The calculation of properties of Bose-Einstein condensates with dipolar interactions has proven a computationally intensive problem due to the long range nature of the interactions, limiting the scope of applications. In particular, the lowest lying Bogoliubov excitations in three-dimensional harmonic trap with cylindrical symmetry were so far computed in an indirect way, by Fourier analysis of time-dependent perturbations, or by approximate variational methods. We have developed a very fast and accurate numerical algorithm based on the Hankel transform for calculating properties of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in cylindrically symmetric traps. As an application, we are able to compute many excitation modes by directly solving the Bogoliubov-De Gennes equations. We explore the behavior of the excited modes in different trap geometries. We use these results to calculate the quantum depletion of the condensate by a combination of a computation of the exact modes and the use of a local density approximation.

Hartree-Fock theory for Bose-Einstein condensates and the inclusion of correlation effects

Brett D. Esry

I specialize the Hartree-Fock, random-phase, and configuration-interaction approximations to a system of interacting bosons in an external potential. This approach affords a more direct connection to the methods and language of atomic-structure calculations. The derivations and equations parallel those found in atomic structure and are contrasted with the more commonly used Bogoliubov approach for bosons. I present a numerical method for solving the Hartree-Fock and random-phase equations to obtain the low-lying excitation energies for trapped alkali-metal atoms.
