We demonstrate that the insulating one-band Hubbard model on the pyrochlore lattice contains, for realistic parameters, an extended quantum spin-liquid phase. This is a three-dimensional spin liquid formed from a highly degenerate manifold of dimer-based states, which is a subset of the classical dimer coverings obeying the ice rules. It possesses spinon excitations, which are both massive and deconfined, and on doping it exhibits spin-charge separation. We discuss the realization of this state in effective
S=1/2 pyrochlore materials.
The complex interplay between charge and spin dynamics lies at the heart of strongly correlated quantum materials, and it is a fundamental topic in basic research with far-reaching technological perspectives. We explore in this paper the dynamics of holes in a single-band, extended t - J model where the background spins form a Z 2 quantum spin liquid. Using a field theory approach based on a parton construction, we show that while the electrons for most momenta fractionalize into uncorrelated charge-carrying holons and spin-carrying spinons as generally expected for a quantum spin liquid, the spinon-holon scattering cross section diverges for certain momenta, signaling strong correlations. By deriving an effective low-energy Hamiltonian describing this dynamics, we demonstrate that these divergences are due to the formation of long-lived spinon-holon bound states. Since the wave function of these bound states is localized over a few lattice sites, they correspond to well-defined fermions with the same charge and spin as the underlying electrons. We then show that quantum gas microscopy with atoms in optical lattices provides an excellent platform for verifying and probing the internal spatial structure of these emerging fermions. The fermions will furthermore show up as clear quasiparticle peaks in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with an intensity determined by their internal structure. For a nonzero hole concentration, the fermions form hole pockets with qualitatively the same location, shape, and intensity variation in the Brillouin zone as the so-called Fermi arcs observed in the pseudogap phase. Such agreement is remarkable since the Fermi arcs arise from the delicate interplay between the symmetry of the quantum spin liquid and the internal structure of the emerging fermions in a minimal single-band model with no extra degrees of freedom added. Our results, therefore, provide a microscopic mechanism for the conjectured fractionalized Fermi liquid and open up new pathways for exploring the pseudogap phase and high-temperature superconductivity as arising from a quantum spin liquid.
The one-dimensional three-band Hubbard Hamiltonian is shown to be equivalent to an effective Hamiltonian that has independent spinon and holon quasiparticle excitations plus a weak coupling of the two. The spinon description includes both copper sites and oxygen hole sites leading to a one-dimensional antiferromagnet incommensurate with the copper lattice. The holons are spinless noninteracting fermions in a simple cosine band. Because the oxygen sites are in the Hamiltonian, the quasiparticles are much simpler than in the exact solution of the t-J model for 2t = +/- J. If a similar description is correct for two dimensions, then the holons will attract in a p-wave potential.
Projective symmetry group classification of fermionic
Z2 spin liquids on the dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore magnets
We construct and classify
Z2 quantum spin liquids (QSLs) of fermionic partons on the dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlore lattice. The DO pseudospin shares the space-group and time-reversal algebra of the effective spin-1/2 Kramers doublet, its projective symmetry group (PSG) yields the same 48 symmetric
Z2 classes as the generic fermionic classification. We show, the distinct DO symmetry action, encoded in a set of sublattice-independent operators, selects a physically different set of symmetry-allowed mean-field channels, so that the resulting ansatze, spinon spectra, and observables differ from both the effective spin-1/2 case and the bosonic DO classification. Decomposing the anisotropic XYZ exchange model into all symmetric singlet and triplet hopping and pairing channels and minimizing the mean-field energy self-consistently, we obtain phase diagrams in the (
Jx~,Jz~) plane in which only a few
Z2 states, several supporting gapless or flat-band spinon spectra, are stabilized. For these states we compute the spinon band structures, the low-temperature specific heat, and the dynamical spin structure factor, and we argue that the power-law specific-heat exponent is a diagnostic of the spinon nodal structure. A near-linear-in-temperature specific heat together with broad continua in the structure factor gives a fermionic-parton account of the gapless, fractionalized thermodynamics reported in DO materials such as
Nd2ScNbO7, complementing the bosonic quantum-spin-ice picture of the Ce-based compounds. The work extends the fermionic-parton classification of DO pyrochlore QSLs beyond the
U(1) sector, where
Z2 topological order is realized equally naturally by fermionic and bosonic spinons.
