Abstract

We develop a systematic perturbation theory for the quasiparticle properties of a single impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Analytical results are derived for the impurity energy, effective mass, and residue to third order in the impurity-boson scattering length. The energy is shown to depend logarithmically on the scattering length to third order, whereas the residue and the effective mass are given by analytical power series. When the boson-boson scattering length equals the boson-impurity scattering length, the energy has the same structure as that of a weakly interacting Bose gas, including terms of the Lee-Huang-Yang and fourth order logarithmic form. Our results, which cannot be obtained within the canonical Fröhlich model of an impurity interacting with phonons, provide valuable benchmarks for many-body theories and for experiments.

Quasiparticle properties of long-range impurities in a Bose condensate

T. Alper Yoğurt, Matthew T. Eiles

An impurity immersed in a Bose condensate can form a quasiparticle known as a Bose polaron. When the impurity-boson interaction is short ranged and three-body Efimov correlations are neglected, the quasiparticle properties can be characterized in terms of the impurity-boson scattering length a IB and the condensate coherence length ξ . This description remains valid irrespective of the bath density n 0 . Long-ranged interactions—such as provided by Rydberg or ionic impurities—introduce an effective interaction range r eff as the third length scale. The interplay among these competing length scales raises the question of whether a robust description across different bath densities can still be maintained. In this study, we discuss the quasiparticle nature of long-range impurities and its dependence on the length scales n 0 − 1 / 3 , r eff , and ξ . We employ two complementary theories—the coherent-state ansatz and the perturbative Gross-Pitaevskii theory—which incorporate beyond-Fröhlich interactions. We derive an analytical expression for the beyond-Fröhlich effective mass for a contact interaction and numerically compute the effective mass for long-range impurities. We argue that the coupling parameter | a IB | n 0 1 / 3 remains the principal parameter governing the properties of the polaron. For weak ( | a IB | n 0 1 / 3 ≪ 1 ) and intermediate ( | a IB | n 0 1 / 3 ≃ 1 ) values of the coupling parameter, long-range impurities in a Bose condensate are well described as quasiparticles with a finite quasiparticle weight and a well-defined effective mass. However, the quasiparticle weight becomes significantly suppressed as the effective impurity volume is occupied by an increasing number of bath particles ( r eff n 0 1 / 3 ≫ 1 ).

Universal Aspects of a Strongly Interacting Impurity in a Dilute Bose Condensate

Pietro Massignan, Nikolay Yegovtsev, Victor Gurarie

We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively tractable limit of weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all quasiparticle properties of a heavy Bose polaron, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact, and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter characterizing its range.

Polaron Properties of an Impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensation

Beibing Huang, Shaolong Wan

In this paper we study an impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensate system at $T=0K$ and suppose the contact forms for boson-boson and boson-impurity interactions. Using Bogoliubov theory and a further approximation corresponding to only think over the forward scattering of impurity by bosons, we derive a reduced Hamiltonian whose form is the same as the Fröhlich Hamiltonian for large polaron. By using Lee-Low-Pines (LLP) theory for large polaron, we obtain the effective mass of impurity, the phonon number carried by impurity and the energy related to the existence of impurity. In addition, we also discuss the valid range for forward-scattering approximation.

Validity of the Fröhlich model for a mobile impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Jonas Lampart, Arnaud Triay

We analyze the many-body Hamiltonian describing a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Using exact unitary transformations and rigorous error estimates, we show the validity of the Bogoliubov-Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian for the Bose polaron in the regime of moderately strong, repulsive interactions with a dilute BEC. Moreover, we calculate analytically the universal logarithmic correction to the ground state energy that arises from an impurity mediated phonon-phonon interaction.

Polaron in the dilute critical Bose condensate

V. Pastukhov

Abstract The properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute D -dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to its second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the 1/ N -expansion, we calculate the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson–boson interaction. It is shown that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit, signalling the non-analytic behavior of the impurity spectrum and pole-free structure of the polaron Green’s function in the infrared region, respectively.

Landau Effective Interaction between Quasiparticles in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Arturo Camacho-Guardian, Georg M. Bruun

Landau's description of the excitations in a macroscopic system in terms of quasiparticles stands out as one of the highlights in quantum physics. It provides an accurate description of otherwise prohibitively complex many-body systems and has led to the development of several key technologies. In this paper, we investigate theoretically the Landau effective interaction between quasiparticles, so-called Bose polarons, formed by impurity particles immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).In the limit of weak interactions between the impurities and the BEC, we derive rigorous results for the effective interaction. They show that it can be strong even for a weak impurity-boson interaction, if the transferred momentumenergy between the quasiparticles is resonant with a sound mode in the BEC.We then develop a diagrammatic scheme to calculate the effective interaction for arbitrary coupling strengths, which recovers the correct weak-coupling results.Using this scheme, we show that the Landau effective interaction, in general, is significantly stronger than that between quasiparticles in a Fermi gas, mainly because a BEC is more compressible than a Fermi gas.The interaction is particularly large near the unitarity limit of the impurity-boson scattering or when the quasiparticle momentum is close to the threshold for momentum relaxation in the BEC.Finally, we show how the Landau effective interaction leads to a sizable shift of the quasiparticle energy with an increasing impurity concentration, which should be detectable with presentday experimental techniques.
