Polaron in the dilute critical Bose condensate

Abstract

Abstract The properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute D -dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to its second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the 1/ N -expansion, we calculate the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson–boson interaction. It is shown that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit, signalling the non-analytic behavior of the impurity spectrum and pole-free structure of the polaron Green’s function in the infrared region, respectively.

Polaron in dilute 2D Bose gas at low temperatures

V. Pastukhov

Abstract The properties of a Bose polaron immersed in a dilute two-dimensional medium at finite temperatures are discussed. Assuming that the impurity is weakly coupled to bath particles, we have perturbatively calculated the polaron energy, effective mass, quasiparticle residue and damping rate. The parameters of the impurity spectrum are found to be well-defined in the whole temperature region whereas the pole structure of the impurity Green’s function is visible only at absolute zero. At any finite temperatures the quasiparticle residue is logarithmically-divergent signalling of the branch-cut behavior of the polaron propagator.

Universal Aspects of a Strongly Interacting Impurity in a Dilute Bose Condensate

Pietro Massignan, Nikolay Yegovtsev, Victor Gurarie

We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively tractable limit of weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all quasiparticle properties of a heavy Bose polaron, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact, and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter characterizing its range.

Finite-temperature behavior of the Bose polaron

Jesper Levinsen, Meera M. Parish, Rasmus Søgaard Christensen +2 more

We consider a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose gas at finite temperature. Using perturbation theory valid for weak coupling between the impurity and the bosons, we derive analytical results for the energy and damping of the impurity for low and high temperatures, as well as for temperatures close to the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ for Bose-Einstein condensation. These results show that the properties of the impurity vary strongly with temperature. In particular, the energy exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior close to ${T}_{c}$, and the damping rises sharply close to ${T}_{c}$. We argue that this behavior is generic for impurities immersed in an environment undergoing a phase transition that breaks a continuous symmetry. Finally, we discuss how these effects can be detected experimentally.

Behavior of the impurity atom in a weakly-interacting Bose gas

G. Panochko, V. Pastukhov, I. O. Vakarchuk

We studied the properties of a single impurity atom immersed in a dilute Bose condensate at low temperatures. In particular, we perturbatively obtained the momentum dependence of the impurity spectrum and damping.By means of the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory we also calculated the self-energy both for attractive and repulsive polaron in the long-wavelength limit. The stability problem of the impurity atom in a weakly-interacting Bose gas is also examined.

Asymptotic Freedom of Two Heavy Impurities in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Dong-Chen Zheng, Wen, Lin, Renyuan Liao

We consider two heavy impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, and calculate the self-energy using the Wilsonian renormalization. The polaron energy, quasiparticle residue and damping rate are extracted from the self-energy. We demonstrate that various effective potentials emerge from the polaron energy under the specific conditions. In the limit of large separation between the impurities, the polaron spectrum converges to the results for a single impurity, exhibiting an attractive-repulsive crossover across the Feshbach resonance. The boundary of this crossover is identified through the analysis of the damping rate. We highlight that repulsive-dominant polarons can exist as long as the impurities are sufficiently close, even when the impurity-boson interactions are attractive. Additionally, we observe that the two impurities become asymptotically free in the repulsive polaron regime. These results are verifiable and offer a fresh perspective on the interaction dynamics between two polarons.

Quasiparticle nature of the Bose polaron at finite temperature

Pascual López, Gerard, Boronat Medico, Jordi

The Bose polaron has attracted theoretical and experimental interest because the mobile impurity is surrounded by a bath that undergoes a superfluid-to-normal phase transition. Although many theoretical works have studied this system in its ground state, only a few analyze its behavior at finite temperature. We have studied the effect of temperature on a Bose polaron system performing ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations. This method is able to approach the critical temperature without losing accuracy, in contrast with perturbative approximations. We have calculated the polaron energy for the repulsive and attractive branches and we have observed an asymmetric behavior between the two branches. When the potential is repulsive, the polaron energy decreases when the temperature increases, and contrariwise for the attractive branch. Our results for the effective mass and the dynamical structure factor of the polaron show unambiguously that its quasiparticle nature disappears close to the critical temperature, in agreement with recent experimental findings. Finally, we have also estimated the fraction of bosons in the condensate as well as the superfluid fraction, and we have concluded that the impurity hinders the condensation of the rest of bosons.
