We investigate quantum phase transitions in the extended periodic Anderson model, which includes electron correlations within and between itinerant and localized bands. We calculate zero and finite temperature properties of the system using the combination of dynamical mean-field theory and the numerical renormalization group. At half filling, a first-order phase transition between a Mott insulating state and a Kondo insulating state occurs in the strong-coupling regime. We furthermore find that a metallic state is stabilized in the weak-coupling regime. This state should be adiabatically connected to the orbital selective Mott state with one orbital-localized and the other itinerant. The effect of hole doping is also addressed.
We investigate the effect of the Coulomb interaction,
Ucf, between the conduction and
f electrons in the periodic Anderson model using the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. We calculate the excitation spectrum of the half-filled symmetric model with an emphasis on the spin and charge excitations. In the one-dimensional version of the model, it is found that the spin gap is smaller than the charge gap below a certain value of
Ucf and the reversed inequality is valid for stronger
Ucf. This behavior is also verified by the behavior of the spin and density correlation functions. We also perform a quantum information analysis of the model and determine the entanglement map of the
f and conduction electrons. It is revealed that for a certain
Ucf the ground state is dominated by the configuration in which the conduction and
f electrons are strongly entangled, and the ground state is almost a product state. For larger
Ucf, the sites are occupied alternatingly dominantly by two
f electrons or by two conduction electrons.
Periodic Anderson model is one of the most important models in the field of strongly correlated electrons. With the recent developed numerical method density matrix embedding theory, we study the ground state properties of the periodic Anderson model on a two-dimensional square lattice. We systematically investigate the phase diagram away from half filling. We find three different phases in this region, which are distinguished by the local moment and the spin–spin correlation functions. The phase transition between the two antiferromagnetic phases is of first order. It is the so-called Lifshitz transition accompanied by a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. As the filling is close to half filling, there is no difference between the two antiferromagnetic phases. From the results of the spin–spin correlation, we find that the Kondo singlet is formed even in the antiferromagnetic phase.
We investigate the ground state of a
p-wave Kondo-Heisenberg model introduced by Alexandrov and Coleman with an Ising-type anisotropy in the Kondo interaction and correlated conduction electrons. Our aim is to understand how they affect the stability of the Haldane state obtained in the SU(2)-symmetric case without the Hubbard interaction. By applying the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm and calculating the entanglement entropy we show that in the anisotropic case a phase transition occurs and a N\'eel state emerges above a critical value of the Coulomb interaction. These findings are also corroborated by the examination of the entanglement spectrum and the spin profile of the system which clarify the structure of each phase.
We investigate the ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model on the square lattice across various band fillings. Employing the infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) technique, we can determine the magnetic ground states accurately and compare them to mean-field predictions to highlight the effects of quantum fluctuations. At half-filling, we analyze the transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic (Kondo singlet) phases as a function of hybridization and
f-level energy, finding excellent agreement with existing quantum Monte Carlo studies in the case of hybridization. For
n=1.5 electrons per site, we identify a novel correlated antiferromagnetic diagonal stripe phase as the ground state, which competes with its ferromagnetic partner state.
We investigate, by means of a field-theory analysis combined with the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, a theoretical model for a strongly correlated quantum system in one dimension realizing a topologically-ordered Haldane phase ground state. The model consists of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to a tight-binding chain via two competing Kondo exchange couplings of different type: a ``
s-wave'' Kondo coupling (
JKs), and a less common ``
p-wave'' (
JKp) Kondo coupling. While the first coupling is the standard Kondo interaction studied in many condensed-matter systems, the latter has been recently introduced by Alexandrov and Coleman [Phys. Rev. B 90, 115147 (2014)] as a possible mechanism leading to a topological Kondo-insulating ground state in one dimension. As a result of this competition, a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) occurs in the system for a critical value of the ratio
JKs/JKp, separating a (Haldane-type) topological phase from a topologically trivial ground state where the system can be essentially described as a product of local singlets. We study and characterize the TQPT by means of the magnetization profile, the entanglement entropy and the full entanglement spectrum of the ground state. Our results might be relevant to understand how topologically-ordered phases of fermions emerge in strongly interacting quantum systems. Received: 1 July 2016, Accepted: 30 August 2016; Edited by: K.
