Abstract

We investigate the effect of the Coulomb interaction, ${U}_{cf}$, between the conduction and $f$ electrons in the periodic Anderson model using the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. We calculate the excitation spectrum of the half-filled symmetric model with an emphasis on the spin and charge excitations. In the one-dimensional version of the model, it is found that the spin gap is smaller than the charge gap below a certain value of ${U}_{cf}$ and the reversed inequality is valid for stronger ${U}_{cf}$. This behavior is also verified by the behavior of the spin and density correlation functions. We also perform a quantum information analysis of the model and determine the entanglement map of the $f$ and conduction electrons. It is revealed that for a certain ${U}_{cf}$ the ground state is dominated by the configuration in which the conduction and $f$ electrons are strongly entangled, and the ground state is almost a product state. For larger ${U}_{cf}$, the sites are occupied alternatingly dominantly by two $f$ electrons or by two conduction electrons.

Incommensurate spin-density-wave and metal-insulator transition in the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model

Pedro Bertussi, M. B. Silva Neto, Tatiana G. Rappoport +2 more

We have used the density-matrix renormalization group method to study the ground-state properties of the symmetric periodic Anderson model in one dimension. We have considered lattices with up to ${N}_{s}=50$ sites, and electron densities ranging from quarter to half filling. Through the calculation of energies, correlation functions, and their structure factors, together with careful extrapolations (toward ${N}_{s}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$), we were able to map out a phase diagram $U\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{vs}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}n$, where $U$ is the electronic repulsion on $f$ orbitals, and $n$ is the electronic density, for a fixed value of the hybridization. At quarter filling, $n=1$, our data is consistent with a transition at ${U}_{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\simeq}2$, between a paramagnetic (PM) metal and a spin-density-wave (SDW) insulator; overall, the region $U\ensuremath{\lesssim}2$ corresponds to a PM metal for all $n<2$. For $1<n\ensuremath{\lesssim}1.5$ a ferromagnetic phase is present within a range of $U$, while for $1.5\ensuremath{\lesssim}n<2$, we find an incommensurate SDW phase; above a certain ${U}_{c}(n)$, the system displays a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida behavior, in which the magnetic wave vector is determined by the occupation of the conduction band. At half filling, the system is an insulating spin liquid, but with a crossover between weak and strong magnetic correlations.

General result on charged and spin-excitation gaps in strongly correlated electron systems at half filling

Guang-Shan Tian, Lei‐Han Tang

The relationship between charged and spin-excitation gaps of the half-filled Hubbard model, the symmetric periodic Anderson model, and the Kondo lattice model is considered for a general $d$-dimensional bipartite lattice. In a previous paper [G. S. Tian, Phys. Rev. B 58, 7612 (1998)], it was shown that the quasiparticle gaps of these models at half filling are always larger than their spin excitation gaps. In the present paper, we establish a theorem, which states that the charged gap is also greater than the corresponding spin gap in these models. This conclusion, which has been reached previously for one-dimensional systems based on variational and the density-matrix renormalization-group numerical calculations, is thus put on a rigorous and more general footing.

Effect of band filling on symmetric and asymmetric one-dimensional periodic Anderson model

Yan Luo, Nicholas Kioussis

We have studied the ground-state properties of the symmetric and asymmetric one-dimensional periodic Anderson model as a function of band filling and the model parameters $(V,U,$and ${E}_{f})$ using the local mean-field (LMF) approach. We have constructed the phase diagram for both cases and have calculated the energy, local moment, and occupation number of the f level. The LMF approach can reveal the basic properties of the system throughout the entire parameter space. For the symmetric case ${(E}_{f}=\ensuremath{-}U/2),$ close to quarter and half filling the antiferromagnetic phase is the ground state. For intermediate band-filling there is a second-order phase transition to a ferromagnetic state. At quarter filling there is a transition from a metallic paramagnetic state to an insulating antiferromagnetic state as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases. The asymmetric case is treated in the mixed-valence regime ${(E}_{f}=0).$ At half filling the ground state is antiferromagnetic while at or close to quarter filling it is paramagnetic. Below half filling the ground state becomes ferromagnetic, suggesting that doping destroys rapidly the antiferromagnetic $f\ensuremath{-}f$ spin correlations. For small values of U we find a paramagnetic state at all band fillings. Results for the average occupation number of the f level compare well with density matrix renormalization group calculations.

The Effects of Band Dispersion and Interactions on the Excitation Gaps in the Periodic Anderson Model in Infinite Dimensions

Yukihiro Shimizu, Osamu Sakai, Alex C. Hewson

We investigate the inter-play of f-electron band dispersion and inter-f electron interactions on the gap in the one electron density of states (DOS) of the periodic Anderson model. The calculations are based on dynamical mean field theory and the numerical renormalization group method for the model in infinite dimensions. The local f-electron DOS at low energies for the electron-hole symmetric model with interactions is found to have a complete-gap, a pseudo-gap or to be gap-less, whenever these structures occur for the non-interacting model but the parameters that characterize these features are strongly renormalized. As the degree of f-electron dispersion is increased, when there is a complete gap, the many-body renormalization remains almost constant, but in the pseudo-gap case the renormalization increases. We calculate the sizes of gaps both in the local DOS and in the dynamic local susceptibilities. When the gap width is defined by the edges in the spectrum for the complete-gap model, the widths of the indirect gap and the spin gap are equal, independent of the degree of electron correlation. However, if the width is defined as the excitation energy between the peaks in the spectrum, then the ratio of the indirect gap to the spin gap increases and eventually saturates as the correlation increases. The value of this ratio depends on the f-electron band dispersion. We have also investigated the dependence of the shape of the interacting DOS on the f-band filling for different forms of f-band dispersion. When the f-band dispersion is small, the gap structure in the symmetric model vanishes as the filling factor decreases. When the model, including the dispersion, has no gap structure, the filling dependence on the DOS in low energies is similar to that for a single impurity Anderson model. The energy dispersion of the quasi-particle in the range, ε f < ε < ε f + U , is approximately explained by the renormalized band model in the cases of both large and small f-band dispersion.

Competition between Hund's coupling and Kondo effect in a one-dimensional extended periodic Anderson model

Imre Hagymási, Jenő Sólyom, Örs Legeza

We study the ground-state properties of an extended periodic Anderson model to understand the role of Hund's coupling between localized and itinerant electrons using the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. By calculating the von Neumann entropies we show that two phase transitions occur and two new phases appear as the hybridization is increased in the symmetric half-filled case due to the competition between Kondo effect and Hund's coupling. In the intermediate phase, which is bounded by two critical points, we found a dimerized ground state, while in the other spatially homogeneous phases the ground state is Haldane-like and Kondo-singlet-like, respectively. We also determine the entanglement spectrum and the entanglement diagram of the system by calculating the mutual information thereby clarifying the structure of each phase.

Spin and charge gaps in the one-dimensional Kondo-lattice model with Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons

Naokazu Shibata, Tomotoshi Nishino, Kazuo Ueda +1 more

The density-matrix renormalization-group method is applied to the one-dimensional Kondo-lattice model with the Coulomb interaction between the conduction electrons. The spin and charge gaps are calculated as a function of the exchange constant $J$ and the Coulomb interaction ${U}_{c}$. It is shown that both the spin and charge gaps increase with increasing $J$ and ${U}_{c}$. The spin gap vanishes in the limit of $J\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for any ${U}_{c}$ with an exponential form, ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{s}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\alpha}({U}_{c})J\ensuremath{\rho}}]$. The exponent, $\ensuremath{\alpha}({U}_{c})$, is determined as a function of ${U}_{c}$. The charge gap is generally much larger than the spin gap. In the limit of $J\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, the charge gap vanishes as ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{c}=\frac{1}{2}J$ for ${U}_{c}=0$ but for a finite ${U}_{c}$ it tends to a finite value, which is the charge gap of the Hubbard model.
