Abstract

Abstract We present a temperature and magnetic field dependence study of spin transport and magnetothermal corrections to the thermal conductivity in the spin S = 1/2 easy-plane Heisenberg chain, extending an earlier analysis based on the Bethe ansatz method. We critically discuss the low temperature, weak magnetic field behavior, the effect of magnetothermal corrections in the vicinity of the critical field and their role in recent thermal conductivity experiments in 1D quantum magnets.

Thermal transport of the XXZ chain in a magnetic field

Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner, A. Honecker, W. Brenig

We study the heat conduction of the spin-$1∕2$ $XXZ$ chain in finite magnetic fields where magnetothermal effects arise. Due to the integrability of this model, all transport coefficients diverge, signaled by finite Drude weights. Using exact diagonalization and mean-field theory, we analyze the temperature and field dependence of the thermal Drude weight for various exchange anisotropies under the condition of zero magnetization-current flow. First, we find a strong magnetic field dependence of the Drude weight, including a suppression of its magnitude with increasing field strength and a nonmonotonic field-dependence of the peak position. Second, for small exchange anisotropies and magnetic fields in the massless as well as in the fully polarized regime, the mean-field approach is in excellent agreement with the exact diagonalization data. Third, at the field-induced quantum critical line between the para- and ferromagnetic region, we propose a universal low-temperature behavior of the thermal Drude weight.

Effective S=12 description of the S=1 chain with strong easy-plane anisotropy

Christina Psaroudaki, J. Herbrych, J. Karadamoglou +3 more

We present a study of the one-dimensional $S=1$ antiferromagnetic spin chain with large easy-plane anisotropy, with special emphasis on field-induced quantum phase transitions. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization, specific heat, and thermal conductivity is presented using a combination of numerical methods. In addition, the original $S=1$ model is mapped into the low-energy effective $S=1/2XXZ$ Heisenberg chain, a model which is exactly solvable using the Bethe ansatz technique. The effectiveness of the mapping is explored, and we show that all considered quantities are in qualitative, and in some cases quantitative, agreement. The thermal conductivity of the considered $S=1$ model is found to be strongly influenced by the underlying effective description. Furthermore, we elucidate the low-lying electron spin resonance spectrum based on a semianalytical Bethe ansatz calculation of the effective $S=1/2$ model.

Non-dissipative Thermal Transport and Magnetothermal Effect for the Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Chain

Kazumitsu Sakai, Andreas Klümper

Anomalous magnetothermal effects are discussed in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The energy current is related to one of the non-trivial conserved quantities underlying integrability and therefore both the diagonal and off diagonal dynamical correlations of spin and energy current diverge. The energy-energy and spin-energy current correlations at finite temperatures are exactly calculated by a lattice path integral formulation. The low-temperature behavior of the thermomagnetic (magnetic Seebeck) coefficient is also discussed.Due to effects of strong correlations, we observe the magnetic Seebeck coefficient changes sign at certain interaction strengths and magnetic fields.

Field-dependent spin and heat conductivities of dimerized spin- 12 chains

S. Langer, R. Darradi, Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner +1 more

We study the spin and heat conductivity of dimerized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains in homogeneous magnetic fields at finite temperatures. At zero temperature, the model undergoes two field-induced quantum phase transitions from a dimerized, into a Luttinger, and finally into a fully polarized phase. We search for signatures of these transitions in the spin and heat conductivities. Using exact diagonalization, we calculate the Drude weights, the frequency dependence of the conductivities, and the corresponding integrated spectral weights. As a main result, we demonstrate that both the spin and heat conductivity are enhanced in the gapless phase and most notably at low frequencies. In the case of the thermal conductivity, however, the field-induced increase seen in the bare transport coefficients is suppressed by magnetothermal effects, caused by the coupling of the heat and spin current in finite magnetic fields. Our results complement recent magnetic transport experiments on spin-ladder materials with sufficiently small exchange couplings allowing access to the field-induced transitions.

The thermal conductivity of the spin-½ XXZ chain at arbitrary temperature

Andreas Klümper, Kazumitsu Sakai

Motivated by recent investigations of transport properties of strongly correlated 1D models and thermal conductivity measurements of quasi 1D magnetic systems, we present results for the integrable spin-½ XXZ chain. The thermal conductivity κ(ω) of this model has ℜ κ(ω) = δ(ω), i.e. it is infinite for zero frequency ω. The weight of the delta peak is calculated exactly by a lattice path integral formulation. Numerical results for wide ranges of temperature and anisotropy are presented. The low- and high-temperature limits are studied analytically.

Thermal conductivity of a quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain with magnetic impurities

Andrei A. Zvyagin

We present an exact theory that describes how magnetic impurities change the behavior of the thermal conductivity for the integrable Heisenberg antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 chain. Single magnetic impurities and a large concentration of impurities with similar values of the couplings to the host chain (a weak disorder) do not change the linear-in-temperature low-T behavior of the thermal conductivity: Only the slope of that behavior becomes smaller, compared to the homogeneous case. The strong disorder in the distribution of the impurity-host couplings produces more rapid temperature growth of the thermal conductivity, compared to the linear-in-T dependence of the homogeneous chain and the chain with weak disorder. Recent experiments on the thermal conductivity in inhomogeneous quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin systems manifest qualitative agreement with our results.
